I honestly like Mike a lot more than Joel. I guess it's because when I started watching MST3k, it was when Mike was hosting. I had no clue Joel was the original host on the SOL till years later. I'm not saying Joel isn't good, he's awesome. But I still like the riffs done by Mike and the bots.
I definitely like Mike better, but like Marc above, I started watching MST3K when Mike was the host. I hard a hard time with the transition back to watching the shows with Joel. I always had a hard time understanding the "invention exchange." Just never clicked with me. I love Pearl Forester and Bobo and Brain Guy!
The first several episodes I watched featured Joel. I laughed, I enjoyed it, but I loved Mike so much more. His relationship with the bots really worked better, at least I thought. Plus Nelson in my eyes is, I wouldn't say funnier...but maybe his delivery is more amusing? Something like that.

As a matter of fact, _MST3K_ creator Joel Hodgson went on to make a TV movie about teenagers - namely an infamous one about six friends being sucked into the internet titled _Web Surferz,_ which in turn spawned the Canadian cartoon sitcom _6teen._
i'm fond of the movie as a movie. They had no budget, but they manage to have a plot, a tiny bit of mystery, escalating tension, people to root for. The leads aren't horrible actors. They got a lot right, and I forgive them the shortcomings that the lack of money cost. Also, they did one heck of a lot with a single song!
Damn - just like a typical Scooby-Doo episode; it was the school janitor behind everything all along. And he would have gotten away with it too, If it weren't for those meddling kids!

Not to be a downer here, but I just put my cat of 14 years down a couple hours ago. I had a friend with me and have support, but I live alone. I got home and the silence was deafening. I cried, a lot. But I needed something to fill the space. This is probably my favorite episode of MST3K. The entire cast feel like my friends. I'm devastated, but this makes me feel a bit better right now.

I think it refers to back when long-distance was still relatively expensive and answering machines still sort of new; people who grew up during the Great Depression are known for their frugality and penny-pinching. That's how I took it, but I could be wrong.

I'm fond of MST movies like this--amateur efforts made for nothing that aren't as horrible as they might be. (Final Sacrifice is another). But the standout of this episode for me is the short--such funny riffing: "no, just old!" and the seething anger comments on the "good relationship: "What the hell what that for? You were supposed to cover down the line!" "the stench of ammonia from crap-filled diapers," "would you just lay off for ten seconds!?"
Why does the cop tell Jimmy to bring the gang in? Isn't that _his_ job? "Yeah, you guys are prime suspects in a string of murders. If you could just pop over for a sec 'cuz I got some incriminating evidence against you. Okay? Thanks."
Even better question: why does the cop tell Mom, who tells Mikey, to tell Jimmy to call the cops, so the cop can tell his buddies to come to the station? Did they not have warrants back then?
That part really bugged me. But I guess they were committed to the script were Jimmy chases down Curly in the car and couldn't think of a more plausible way for that to happen.

I'm fond of MST movies like this--amateur efforts made for nothing that aren't as horrible as they might be. (Final Sacrifice is another). But the standout of this episode for me is the short--such funny riffing: "no, just old!" and the seething anger comments on the "good relationship: "What the hell what that for? You were supposed to cover down the line!" "the stench of ammonia from crap-filled diapers," "would you just lay off for ten seconds!?"
I...must carve that song from my mind with a fork.

Why does the cop tell Jimmy to bring the gang in? Isn't that _his_ job?

Especially since all three murders have happened within a week. You'd think everyone would be home with the doors locked.
Even better question: why does the cop tell Mom, who tells Mikey, to tell Jimmy to call the cops, so the cop can tell his buddies to come to the station? Did they not have warrants back then?
That part really bugged me. But I guess they were committed to the script were Jimmy chases down Curly in the car and couldn't think of a more plausible way for that to happen.
