This is technically day 1 of Route 66, the 15-day Eagle Rider guided tour and considered to be the “Arrival Day” here in Chicago. We met our fellow riders and our Tour Leaders (Brad and Andreas) at 16:00 in the Main Lobby where they outlined the tour in a detailed Orientation Meeting. After discussing formalities such as safe riding practices (which clearly many on the tour didn't understand!), weather, time-management, etc., Brad took us out for a wonderful Welcome Dinner later that evening, so everyone in the group could get to know each other.
Chicago is known as the Windy City! Nicknamed the 'Paris of the Prairie', Chicago is the biggest and most exciting of the Great Lake cities. It includes a stunning skyline along Lake Michigan, and a gamut of top-rated museums, restaurants and cafes, and innumerable bars and nightclubs that pay homage to the city’s strong jazz and blues heritage.
In the morning we are taken to pick up our bikes and then we head off for the ultimate American road trip. The legendary Route 66 begins, cutting through the state of Illinois before running all the way to the Pacific Coast. From Chicago we headed south along the Pontiac Trail, the original name for this bit of the road here, passing through Joliet, checking out the Launching Pad Giant, stopping at the amazing RT 66 Museum in Pontiac and generally getting a feel for the rubber on the Mother Road.
What we didn't expect or bank on, was the weather. It rained so hard, some even bailed and took the support vehicle to escape the rain. It was a tough first day in the saddle, but we didn't care, we were here living our dream to ride across America. So we just ploughed on, as we do on these trips. After all, if it was easy, everyone would do it right?

That reminds us of an horrendous ride from Las Vegas to Kingman - soaked to the skin and freezing cold! ☔️🥶 blew the electrics in the hotel drying out gloves with the hairdryer 😂 - I’m sure the weather will improve as you go west! Looking forward to the next episode! 👍😀

I don't think I've ever used an open face helmet, even when I did my CBT on a Yamaha SR125 in Halifax in the 1990s. Are you doing this 'now' in August 2022? It's monsoon season in the south west, the roads in Death Valley were destroyed by flooding a few days ago. But it's in the 90s too, so at least you'll dry out fast. I feel appologetic for the state of the roads. So are you liking the HD experience? Or are you missing your BMWs? This tour organizer seems much better about interracting with other traffic than what I have met in person. I came across one of these groups on Sonora Pass in the Sierra Nevada, but they were riding close together so they had to be passed as a group. Most HD groups over here don't do anything to make themselves easy to pass as they trundle along well under the limit.

It's relatively new to us too and after a while they are so nice to wear, especially in scorching heat, quite refreshing, yet still much safer than most wear here in the US, if they bother wearing them at all that is. Most wear baseball caps :(

@@Us_On_Tour I am in NH and most bikers we see are what my medic friends in the UK called organ donors. Janet was a specialist reconstructive surgery nurse. She worked mostly on accident victims. She was a biker too and had rebuilt enough biker faces to never want anyone to wear an open face lid. When I moved to CA in 1998 most bikers wore jeans and t shirts, but over the 20 years I lived there the majority switched to sports bikes and proper clothing.
