Here's the explanation:
"Mama" is Exo's debut song and mv. It is how Exo was introduced to the world and it explains the group concept. From the beginning Exo's concept is that they are aliens from planet called Exoplanet (it does exist in this universe tho I'm not gonna lie) and they came to Earth with super powers to protect the Tree of life. Each of the members has a super power that is unique to them and almost every mv will have atleast one if not all of them using their powers. Exo, as in exoskeleton, means "outer", so as a member of exo they're outside the ordinary, the group concept comes from the real term Exoplanet, which is a term that is used for a planet that is outside our solar system, so their name was chosen to represent the fact that they're stars that are "out of this world" when it comes to their talents.
In the beginning there was 12 members and they were split up into 2 groups (Exo-K and Exo-M). Exo-K sang and preformed their songs in korean and Exo-M sang and performed those same songs in Mandarin Chinese, Exo-K had 6 korean members and Exo-M had 4 Chinese members and 2 korean members.
However, since then 3 of the 4 Chinese members have left the group (short answer to focus their solo work back in China) but there is still one Chinese member left, Lay. (Any performance or MVs you watch (Overdose) that took place prior to may 2014 you will see all 12 of the members. Kris and luhan left in 2014 and Tao left in 2015. However,now, because they no longer have enough Chinese members they no longer do separate promotions where the group is split up, but they still produce all their song in both korean and Mandarin, they just now promote all as one big group Exo with 9 members start in 2016 (monster era).
Their fandom name is Exo-L because falls right between K and M and it stands for Love :-)
In korean MAMA is term they use to address a leader or king or queen, its a term of reverence and respect. Its similar to saying "Your Majesty". If you watch very many historical korean dramas you will hear the characters call the royal family and especially the head of the royal family "Mama". So in this song they are speaking to the leader who sent them to Earth, essentially asking. "Now that I'm here, Your Majesty what should I do?"

EXO has been 12 members from the start, 6 focusing in EXO-K, the Korean side, and the other 6 focusing in EXO-M, the Chinese side. Along the way we lost 3 Chinese members, first Kris left, then Luhan, then Tao. Now EXO is 9, but promotes with 8 since Lay, the last Chinese member is promoting in China.

This was one of the K-pop songs my older sister showed me when I was younger and it literally never gets old. I haven't found another EXO song that I really like but then again I haven't listened to that many yet so I'll keep looking 😅

EXO has never followed trends before debut to this day. they START trends. and this is a mix of genre like any of their songs but they actually have a separate Heavy Metal ver of this song. you shud check it out. yes it is another planet. they are aliens from EXO Planet and they have different powers. the MV showcases each member's power.
Couldnt agree more. To note that this was not overly welcomed during their debut (cuz growl kick them off to the top) means people were not expecting this this style. And yup till now they refuse to fit in the norms but stand out and open new doors.

They literally pulled Obsession with those extreme looks when kpop has all but stopped doing extreme fashion which used to be the staple of this genre. They stay true to themselves yet reinvent it all over. No one is brave enough to pull those looks in today's industry of brand name styling.
Exactly! that's what makes them legendary/icon. I don't mind if they're in hiatus or they're doing their own activities- im just sooo happy that the boys are reaping the prize of their hardwork cuz let's be honest AWARD is no doubt great- but living outside the stage, doing the things that make them more knowledgeable for their self-growth- that is even more rewarding. Regarding the intro narration and the scenes with 12 members, it's important to understand that when EXO debuted, they had two different 6 member groups. One was EXO-K, which released songs in Korean for the Korean market and the other was EXO-M which released songs in Mandarin for the Chinese market. The intro talks about 12 forces being divided in two, and then reuniting into a "perfect" root.
Some scenes were filmed with all 12 members, like the intro and also some of the chorus, and then individual shots were filmed with the Korean or Chinese members during the verses. You can usually find the EXO-M versions of each song, although there's not really much difference in them as far as I remember. Later songs like Growl featured all 12 members in most shots but still only had either Korean or Chinese lyrics.

"Mama" still remains the most legendary and expensive debut song in the Kpop history. The song introduces the basic concept of EXO, we call it EXO theory: who they are, where they are from, what the super power of each members are, etc.

You might also want to watch the Chinese version of MAMA since it has a diffrent MV. This MV show EXO's power they have in their story line which spans all their MV's and the Chinese MV show of the other halfs powers instead.

If i can summarize for you
2012 (debut) - exo-k and exo-m have 6 members each promoting the same songs in korean & mandarin (hence that intro here “shall stand on different grounds but same sky, same grounds but diff skies blah blah”)
2013 - experimental so actually exo-k + exo-m makes up “exo” (as a whole, even from the beginning) but this is the first time SM makes them promote as such, as whole group of just “exo” (6 members + 6 members = 12 members)
EXPLOSIVE POPULARITY
2014 - SM makes them promote back to exo-k and exo-m again, and then 2 chinese members from exo-m leave
2015 - promotions as “exo” this year and not by sub-units (bec this time only 4 members remain in exo-m) then 1 more chinese member leaves. So only 3/6 members are left for exo-m
2016-2020 - promotions as just exo bec basically it’ll be imbalanced now to have exo-k and exo-m as “counterparts” of each other when its 6 and 3 members.
SO basically they just use the merged state of “exo” forever, with 9 official members, and they still make korean and chinese versions of some songs but with the same 9 members (unlike before where only 6 sing in korean, 6 assigned for mandarin
*lay/yixing is the only chinese member left in exo, they are still 9 with him OFFICIALLY (but lay hasn’t joined promotions since 2017 kokobop era bec of ongoing political tension between China & S. They are living in diff worlds thats why you saw members standing upside down. This mv is the Korean ver. Thats why i want you to react in Chinese ver. You'll see the other members there.

To answer all your questions: I have commented that once already but guess you didn‘t see it. EXO has a concept/storyline which is literally SO detailed/ detail-oriented and COMPLEX. Yes each member has a superpower and they all come from another planet (that‘s why their name is EXO, exo- means „outer-“ like in outerspace) They come from an Exoplanet, which is somewhere outside our solar system. The reason why they made them have an alien concept and make them come from a whole other planet is because they wanted to show that EXO is DIFFERENT, unique, something we have never seen before, and that their talent is beyond human level. The rest of the storyline is way to complicated to explain, also, you can only make theories since nothing is official. But every MV, every concert VCR, even their albums contribute to the whole storyline and little details matter. Also, this is their debut. But they have released predebut songs, „What is love?“ is the first track they released (only two members sing though) It‘s a good preview to introduce the group because it‘s SO RnB!! And rnb is almost all Exo is about.
Also, Exo was 12 members in the beginning. They were split into TWO groups, Exo-K, Exo-M. 6 in each group. 6 members sang this song (Korean version) but all were shown in the MV, but the focus in the MV was on the Exo-K members obviously, while in EXO-M (mandarin vers.) the focus was on the Exo-M members.
The whole point of both the EXO-K and EXO-M versions of their songs and each MV is to introduce you to EXO's concept and storyline. "Mama" is like the first episode of EXO's drama -- it sets up everything to come in the rest of the series. And if you miss any part of the first episode you will forever be lost when it comes to the rest of EXO's story. So, in other words, you HAVE TO watch the EXO-M version of "Mama." If you watch both versions of their "Mama" MV, you might be able to understand a little more about EXO's mission and everything they have been sent to Earth to do.
That's why it's important to watch BOTH versions.
You also need to pay attention to the lyrics for "Mama." As you saw, the majority of their chant is in English: "Shoot anonymous, anonymous
; Heartless, mindless; No one who care about me ... Careless, careless (Mama: Mama in Korean means Your Majesty); Shoot anonymous, anonymous (Mama); Heartless, mindless (Mama); No one who care about me (Mama)" Also, if you pay attention to what the whole song is talking about and what the lyrics mean it will give you even more insight into why EXO have been sent to Earth and what their mission is all about. EXO's storyline begins with them being sent to Earth to try and heal the world and to stop and prevent the Red Force from taking over and corrupting everything. And the story in the lyrics of "Mama" foreshadows what they will have to overcome and understand about humans and our world to accomplish their tasks. EXO kind of takes humanity to task and asks us to explain why we would allow all this anger and hatred to cloud everything around us and why we don't love each other more? It's really a very beautiful message and the more you learn about EXO the more interesting the whole thing becomes.
In the song the members, being aliens from another planet, are struggling to understand how we as humans could allow all this evil and bad things to happen all around us, such as war, etc. and they are daunted by the fact that they are now tasked with figuring out how to fix it all and prevent more evil from taking place. That's why they need to find the two halves of the Tree of Life and reunite them to restore peace. EXO's story is part supernatural and Sci-Fi and part based on reality, which touches on real life events and things that are really happening in the world. And from the very beginning, even during pre-debut days, and everything since then and everything yet to come, it all is connected to that storyline. Everything EXO does and everything you see from them, including Baekhyun and Kai's parts in SuperM, all has something to do with the concept and story that began with "Mama," and each new installment of something from the members expands a little further on EXO's story. Whether it's an MV from the group, a solo project from one of the members, a sub-unit project, a live performance, teaser videos, concert VCRs, or even a good amount of their choreography, it all has been designed to connect to EXO's storyline.
Also, the symbols you saw represents each of the members and it has to do with each of their powers. For instance, Kai's symbol is a pyramid and it represents teleportation, and Lay's symbol is a unicorn and it represents his power of healing, etc.(In future MVs and other things to do with EXO, when you see things like a pyramid, you know that is a reference to something to do with Kai, etc.) Even the most minute details in EXO's content has something to do with their origin story and EXO's storyline.
Although, "Mama" is considered EXO's debut, they actually released 2 MVs a few weeks before "Mama" as pre-debut songs, "This is Love" and "History" and they both were designed to set up EXO's story. Plus, even before EXO debuted SM released 23 short pre-debut teaser videos over about a 3 month period that helped introduce the members and to showcase their special talents and to tease to several of, what we later discovered would become, some of EXO's main tracks on several of their albums. So if you want to continue your journey of understanding EXO's concept and story, you should also check out all their pre-debut content -- especially those pre-debut MVs.
It's kind of mind blowing the amount of planning and manipulation SM has been doing over the years to connect all the dots and to continue the story. It gets even crazier when you realize how even the most minute of details were crafted to be a hidden message or detail within that storyline.
But as I said, the one thing you have to keep in mind with all of EXO's MVs, and I really mean all of them -- including EXO's sub-sub-unit MVs and many of the members' solo MVs, as well as SuperM's MVs -- is that they are all connected and they all tell a little more of EXO's story and why they are on Earth, etc.
Unfortunately, to make it even more difficult to understand, each part of the story is not necessarily in chronological order, so we, as EXO-L, have to become detectives and analyze every aspect of everything any of the members are involved in to try and piece it all together and figure out where each part fits within their larger storyline.
To help you pinpoint the powers being used in their MVs and live performances here is a list of the members and what their special power is.
EXO-K
💦 Suho (Kim JunMyeo) is the leader of the group and he is a lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control water (Fun fact: Suho in Korean means guardian, as in the guardian of EXO. That's why as the leader of EXO, his stage name is Suho)
💡Baekhyun is a main vocalist and his superpower is the ability to control light
🔥Chanyeol is the main rapper and lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control fire and his spirit animal is the phoenix.
🌏D.O. (Do KyungSoo) is a main vocalist and his power is the ability to control earth (dirt) which gives him strength/force
☄Kai (Kim JongIn) is a main dancer, lead vocalist and sub-rapper and his power is teleportation
(Kai means door or gateway, so his stage name is supposed to foreshadow his role within EXO's storyline.)
🌪Sehun is the youngest member of the group and he is a lead rapper, lead dancer and a vocalist -- his power is the ability to control wind
EXO-M
❄Xiumin (Kim MinSeok) is the oldest member of the group and he is a lead vocalist and lead rapper and his power is the ability to control snow/ice (frost)
🦄 Lay (Zhang Yixing) is the Chinese member of the group, he is a main dancer, lead vocalist and rapper -- his power is the ability to heal anything.
🌩 Chen (Kim JongDae) is a main vocalist and his power is the ability to control thunder/lightning/electricity
(As you can see, Xiumin and Chen were given stage names that sounded more Chinese so they would fit in better in EXO-M because they are the Korean members of the Chinese group)

@@Gabriele-cb6pp Nothing really changes. They still continue the storyline they just have stopped promoting as EXO-K and EXO-M and they now promote as just EXO. But there are still elements of EXO-M that are part of EXO's storyline. They still produce most of their songs in both Korean and Mandarin and you will often see the remaining EXO-M members -- Xiumin, Chen and Lay -- pared up in their choreography or connected through their storyline. And some theories even point to how some of the members may have absorbed or taken on Kris, Luhan and Tao's powers, but we don't see the use of them very often.
With every new twist SM is thrown they adapt the story to reflect the changes. For example, D.O. and Xiumin enlisted in the military earlier then what SM was originally planning so they had to adapt the storyline to reflect their absence in the group. And now some of EXO's recent MVs have storylines that we believe point to reasons why they are absent within the storyline.
And I think that in the end, SM is going to wrap it all up and actually make the fact that Kris, Luhan and Tao are no longer there part of EXO's story.

Now that you have seen the EXO-K version of "Mama" you really need to watch the EXO-M version. it's important you know EXO's story and really pay attention to the introduction of this MV to understand everything that happens from now on in all the rest of EXO's MVs.

In the EXO-K version of "Mama" (The version you just watched) the members are using their powers to search for and meet up with the EXO-M members. That is why you see the K members traveling to find the M member. For example, you see Kai using his power of teleportation as he searches for the M members and you see Baekhyun use his power of light and Suho with his power of water, Chanyeol with the power of fire using his Phoenix wings, D.O. with the power of earth and strength and Sehun controlling the wind. Because Xiumin is a member of EXO-M, you see him appear in the mirror because the K members are searching for him and he is being summoned, etc. As the story goes, when EXO arrived on Earth they did not all arrive together. Their story starts out that they were dropped on Earth in different locations all over the world and they have to search for each other and meet up, kind of like in a quest, before they can begin to figure out how to accomplish the tasks they have been sent to Earth to do.
When you see the members all together in their "Mama" MVs they are together because they are still on Planet EXO where they are still united. So how I interpret it is that at the end they aren't back together yet, but that is a scene from when they were still on EXO Planet as they are preparing to be sent to Earth. The two worlds the narrator talks about in the introduction could possibly be different dimensions, so you often see parts of their story which could be interpreted as them being in different dimensions or time periods or different moments in history.
If you want to see the EXO-M members and their story and superpowers you need to watch the EXO-M (Mandarin Chinese) version of "Mama" The M version will feature the EXO-M members and they will be the ones singing the main parts of the song. You only see small clips of the M members in the Korean version. But in the Chinese version the story continues, and EXO-M members are the ones that are highlighted. You have to see both MVs to understand the full story.
Each of the members in EXO-K has a counterpart in EXO-M so part of what you were seeing in this MV was them showing you which EXO-K member corresponded with which EXO-M member. For example Suho (EXO-K) with the power of water corresponds with Xiumin (EXO-M) who has the power of frost/ice and Chanyeol (EXO-K) with the power of fire is Kris' (EXO-M) counterpart because he is the power of flight, and as you will see when you watch the EXO-M MV, Chanyeol has the power of the phoenix and Kris has the power of the dragon which both animal spirits have fire elements and flight so they connect; D.O. Also, each member in EXO-K has a counterpart in EXO-M that fills the same role in each group. For example, D.O. is the main vocalist in EXO-K and Chen is the main vocalist in EXO-M; Baekhyun is the second main vocalist in K and Luhan was the second main vocalist in M; Chanyeol is the main rapper in K and Kris was the main rapper in M; Sehun is the lead rapper in K and Xiumin is the lead rapper in M; Kai is the main dancer in K and Lay is the main dancer in M; and then it's Suho is a lead vocalist in K and Tao was a rapper/vocalist in M (I'm not sure how these two really work together because Tao is more of a rapper and Suho is a vocalist, but because they are the last two they are put together.)

Now that you have seen "Mama" and are starting to understand EXO's backstory, if you watch any of their other MVs, it should make more sense to you if you keep in mind all the details about them being aliens with superpowers and how they are on a mission, etc. For example, In EXO's "Overdose" MV they have been lured into and trapped in a maze by the Red Force and they are trying to use their superpowers to figure out a way to escape, but somehow the maze effects their powers and it causes them to lose control and allows the Red Force to capture them. After "Overdose," the story picks up in their "Lucky One" MV where the Red Force has transferred the members from the maze to a hospital-like setting that is supposed to be a government lab facility where the Red Force is now doing experiments on EXO to figure out what makes them special and to find a way to disrupt their connection to the Tree of Life and to prevent them from gaining control, as well as maybe figure out what they need to do to clone them like we see has been done in their "Obsession" MV, etc. In "Lucky One" the members use their powers to overthrow the Red Force and to escape the facility. And that is where the story picks up in their "Ko Ko Bop" MV. in "Ko Ko Bop" EXO are free from the Red Forces' control for the moment and they all act like they are in a drugged state. The Ko Ko Bop drink that Suho mixes and the wafers or pills that the members all take, is supposed to help them detox from the drugs they were given against their will by the Red Force when they were being experimented on. Because they are still a little loopy from the drugs, in "Ko Ko Bop" you see them all playing with their powers without caution.

I can't explain to people how great their debut was. I've followed them since their predebut teasers and completely fallen in love with them. EXO was such an ambitious project from SM Entertainment and a lot of people didn't believe they were going to make it since SM has some other successfull groups (TVXQ, Super Junior, SNSD, SHINee, BoA, etc) and in their debut they were not so successfull as them but later they became THE group. Until now, they're the top.
But lemme tell you their debut story was so amazing with all the powers and division (K and M). The 12 of them were incredible. I'm so glad I could live that era with them

In this MAMA M/V, there is this super long intro that explains there was one world which lived in harmony while powered by the Tree of Life, but when the Red Force threatened to kill the Tree of Life, the 12 original members of EXO split the Tree of Life in half and thus lived in two alternate worlds.
Two alternate worlds? Back in the days, EXO was divided into subgroups EXO-K (Korean) and EXO-M (Mandarin). The two groups promoted in Korea and China and sang the same songs in different languages. The two worlds were represented by these two subgroups. In early music videos, like History (their pre-debut MV), MAMA, and What is Love, you can see this concept shine through. In What is Love, the EXO members are all separated from each other and are searching for each other on Earth. They are constantly trying to reconnect the two worlds, but according to the MAMA intro, the two worlds will not be reunited until the Red Force is "purified."
The Red Force is a reoccurring enemy of EXO and appears most obviously in the Lucky One and Power music videos. We know that the Red Force wants to harness EXO's superpowers and have made many attempts to steal them before (See: "Power" and "Lucky One" M/V).
But that’s not all! EXO also came to Earth (in an alien spaceship) to protect humans from any danger. In the VCR from EXO’s fourth concert EXO’rDIUM, it was revealed that EXO landed on Earth over 5,000 years ago (traced back to ancient Egypt!) and has since then been fighting our wars with us and maintaining peace. It was only recently that the government began learning about an alien presence and discovered remnants of EXO’s spaceship from the History M/V on the Moon.

To understand EXO's mvs u need to know their concept. Exo are aliens from exoplanet and they all have superpowers which they got from the tree of life (i suppose). They have come to Earth to fight the red force.
Exo was initially a 12 member group consisting of EXO-K (suho, baekhyun, DO, chanyeol, kai and sehun) and EXO-M (kris, xiumin, lay, chen, luhan and tao). Exo k promoted in korea and exo m promoted in china. Due to some issues, 3 Chinese members left the group (Kris, luhan and tao). Only one Chinese member, Lay, is left in the group bt he hasn't been able to promote with the group since 2017 due to some political probs between china and korea.
To understand more of what's happening in the mvs u may need to watch both the korean and Chinese versions of the songs.
The super powers of each members are:
Suho- water

Lay- healing
