@@DIRTYSOUTHSHINOBI He just said ONE of the best. There’s a limit of how many best songs people can have, now? Plus Kitchen Lights being overall the top 2 most played song of the album on streaming platforms and beloved by critics is really telling about how people view the song.
This is a fun ass project. Also, JID was cool, but Conway on “Kostas” was easily the standout, the way he kept changing his flows was insane. I swear Conway could’ve rapped on that beat for a week straight 🔥🔥🔥

I’m with Ken and Rod on this one. At first I was thrown off, but the more I listen to it, the more I really like it. I get why a lot of people don’t like it tho
My expectations for this album were high because of how good Pray For Paris was but it was such a let down. The trap flows don’t sound good from Gunn, the DJ Drama yelling isn’t good, and it’s not cohesive either. It legitimately sounds like just some random songs thrown together for a DJ Drama tape, and that’s very disappointing considering that Westside Gunn can curate projects
I’m with Beezy on this one. I don’t think I will be returning to this one as much there’s no denying that Kitchen Lights is one of the best songs I’ve heard this year and JID is going to steal the show every single time.
This was a extremely difficult listen for me. It took me 3 or 4 listens just to get through it. I felt like my ears were being waterboarded. If this was his "Gangsta Grillz" mixtape hosted by DJ Drama I could give it pass for how Southern influenced it was and how bad the sequencing and mixing of this project is; but to have this serve as a sequel to one of your most acclaimed albums "Pray for Paris"; nope! I don't have an issue with Eastcoast rappers going over trap beats (Nas, Jadakiss, Dave East, Conway, and Benny the Butcher do it extremely well), I have an issue with rhyming off beat on busy high hats and 808's. For an artist with such as signature sound and consistent discography it's strange for an artist to completely abandon that foundation on their farewell album or swan song.
There was a 8.5/10 album in here if it was cut down to about 12 tracks. The first half of this project went so hard but really took a step down at the end. That being said I think the boom bap purists are giving this project way too much hate. There's several certified bangers on here
I really love how knowledgable y’all are about hip hop, I learn a lot from ya. But still, not knowing who giggs is and where he’s from… UK legend. I’m not from the UK, but I feel like you should know of him at least. Diversification brings flavour. Other than that, love what y’all put out. I’m behind on west’s albums, but I’ll catch up. Always love y’all’s take on things thi
I really enjoyed this album on first listen. Kinda surprised I did. It flowed really well for me. I also completely understand why folks don’t like it. Appreciate the review as always guys!
I agree with Beezy on how some of the features were placed. I actually wouldve loved to hear Est Gee over a conductor or Daringer beat but I see what Gunn was goin on this album. Everything from the dj tags with legendary mixtape djs from the south to the sound quality was trying to capture the energy of that era in trap music. It def grew on me.
It’s probably the first time I’m feeling disconnected with DEHH (maybe except Beezy). To me this album is just bad except just for 4-5 tracks. I like trap, but these beats are very low quality, WSG’s rapping was awful on it (slow and not on beat), and the album is overall all over the place.
I see what Westside is doing. He already proved he can curate avant-garde “underground”. Now he’s preparing to curate avant-garde trap “commercial”. This is the first attempt.
I feel that's his point. He tryna flex like I can do what yall do better than yall and yall can't do what I do at all. West drops soo much he's earned the right to make this project especially when he still sprinkled in his usually shit on the album. Fans are spoiled and fickle for trashing him for this album
he actually said in an interview that he was basically just having fun and hes gonna go back to the classic sound with people like madlib and alchemist because so many new people are being put on to him from his features on stuff like donda and utopia
that's my problem with it: i don't think the trap sounds as "avante-garde" as his boom bap selections. he has an interesting ear but i don't think that came thru in the album for me - like it usually does.
I was really thrown off at first but halfway through, I was like "Oh I see what he's doing here." and I started to like it for what it was not what I was expecting it to be.
Everybody hating on gun going trap are nerds, go listen to some old Gucci Mane mixtapes or just shit back then on Dj fletch tapes, that's the era he was tapping into. the real raw trap shit. Yall to used to certain pockets on certain beats. His given the fans boombap for the past 20 or so albums 😂 and now everybody dissapointed when he wants to try something new smh. The fans or just people that don’t create art really be the ones calling everything trash especially when they understand it. I didn’t really fw the album first listen but after a few listens i get it.
Stop! When an artist who has been doing boom Bap his entire career and suddenly decides to be "different" and uses Trap beats to please today's new fans is ridiculous. Did you ever see Wu or Gangstarr ever doing this shit? Imagine a Wu-Tang or Gangstarr album full of trap beats! Long time fans would be heated, but then again they would never ever do that. Its not about not trying to be different, its about doing something that tailors to your style. Gunn is a grimy cat from NY, and him rhyming over some weak ass trap garbage beats is not him. Him trying to do something different that is "not him" was not a good move. To me I feel he fell victim to these industry sharks because "trap" is the thing and bring in the sales. This reminds me of when the Black Eyed Peas used to be real dope, then over night turned pop.
Just cuz it’s trap doesn’t mean it’s good, there can be trash trap beats which most of these were. His flow was also atrocious and borderline offbeat on most of this shit
i really cant get behind this one the majority of this sounds really lackluster imo and west just doesnt go well over trap beats. i can easily just hit 1 of the 100+ gucci tapes from back in the day to get my fix with exponentially better beats and rapping 🤷♂ this and 10 are easily the bottom of his discog for me
we don't need trap wsg the problem with this album is that he has 1 trap flow and a terrrrrible selection of trap beats. idk what they are on. i don't think wsg lost it because everything on here that isnt trap is some of his best stuff ever but the album as a whole is so bad
I was always a Griselda fan but their recent projects have been slowing down for sure imo. I don’t know if it’s because they’ve over saturated their catalog releasing albums every 6 months and I’m desensitised or what
First listen I didn’t like it because I was expecting a Pray for Paris sequel.. but after a few listens I absolutely love it. Front to back. It’s an incredible album. Westside the goat
