Hi y’all! Something I wanted to mention about Harlow’s alerting is that is natural, meaning I did not train her to do so. She picked up on my fainting spells by her own instincts and I encouraged her to improve in consistency/forcefulness from there. One other thing she does to alert is give me a *very* concerned stare (she did this for a while in between nose bumps, I edited it out just because it lasted so long lol). I can just tell from her body language/demeanor that she is warning me of something. I try to catch Harlow’s feats on camera as much as possible, but I can only do so much in the midst of a medical event since I need to focus on my body and Har. i fly alot of remote control heli's and i saw that u was putting the power on too fast which was causing the heli to sometimes not start and heli's are quite responsive so you need little movements and slow movements. :)
Chronically Jaquie I just want to say that animals have a great instict about these kind of things. It's amazing. Yesterday I couldn't see the eclipse whatsoever but my dog felt something. Around 1:30 or so, he was pacing back n forth, whining had an accident in the house (he never has acidents in the house). He was just not himself. When the eclipse passes, he became himself. It was soooo amazing to see him react to things that humans cannot.

I was on the bus and another passenger had a service dog (which I ignored thanks to the knowledge you gave me) and the dog started doing that to another passenger. The dog owner asked if the man was epileptic and he said he wasn't, but the dog kept bumping him, becoming more and more persistent. The dog owner said the dog was telling him he was about to have a seizure. The guy finally moved, sitting next to me, but the dog was watching him and crying. The guy made a comment about the "stupid dog" then a minute or so later the guy's eyes rolled back and he started seizing. We got the bus stopped and I called 911. I have no idea why the guy had a seizure, but it was kind of mind blowing the dog alerted a stranger like that.
Eric Taylor that’s kinda bad because service dogs should be trained to only task for their owner as if it’s someone else the dog could be distracted and not alert to the owner.
These little lads and lasses are so smart they amaze me every time. I love my lab JessieJane but she'd have made a terrible alert dog, she's obsessed with me, I'd constantly think I was about to fall out lol

Do you feel comfortable saying how tall you are? I'm 5'1 and getting a Golden soon as well, and I assume Harlow is about 2 feet tall. If you're just about my height, then I'll have an idea on how big my Golden will be (I haven't met him before, his name is Tucker) :)
I always sort of wondered how tall you were because of the size of your SD. Not saying she is too small or anything I meant because she does mobility work and it is interesting to see the different size dogs people go for. Some choose way bigger than they *technically (in an "acceptable size for mobility work for your size sort of way") and some just go for a more average size SD. I hope that made sense. Example: think The Frey life's Ollie is pretty tall technically for the size of the handler Mary. It all interests me. :)
Hey Jacquie, Do you or your doc have an idea of what is happening in your body that causes Harlow to alert so early? Change in respiration or body temp? I find it fascinating that she alerts so far in advance.
It depends on the cause, but usualy it's a change in the heartbeat (faster, slower, stronger, weaker), sweating (someting so light than humans can't detect it, a dog will percieve the smell and heat) and sometimes, it's about pheromones (in case of stress, anxiety, etc.) In Jaquie's case, if you pay really attention, you notice that her face is getting more and more pale, the socket of her eyes and circle underneath are getting darker and, it's really small and difficult to see, but at 3:47, when she raises her brows then relaxe her face, you can see very light lines on her forehead that don't disappear immediately. At her age, it's a sign of deshydratation and/or physical stress. That alone wouldn't be enought to predict she would faint, but added to the rest, it's a confirmation. Now, it's easy for me to see it, because it's a video and I can pause it and it's writen in the description that she had fainted. But in real time, it's hard to get. However, animals percieve thoses traits more quicky than us. There is also the body language. Teeny tiny changes, that humans don't really notice because we are mostly use to verbal communication, but animals, and especially dogs, communicate by body language. A slump of the shoulders, head, feets that are more draging, weakness or small tremors in the hands, a lack of reactivity in the eye or a tendancy to avoid other people eyes... those are clues they get immediatly.
Hey Jaquie. I'm a recent subscriber. I started watching your videos for research, as I've been thinking about getting a service dog. My biggest fear about getting one was the dog "washing out", as people put it. But after seeing something like this (as I have had syncope/near syncope episodes) I'm beginning to see that the benefits can outweigh the risks, so thank you.

I know what it's like to have chronic pain alot, I'm 22 yrs old. I have Ulcerative Colitis, gastro-paresis, IBS-D and arthritis in both knees and ankles. I'm on 2mg dilaudid tablets and a 75mcg fentanyl patch. I'm 22 man, my doctor says "I have 80 year olds on less pain medication than you". But The pain meds keep me out of the emergency room where they seem to just think I'm a drug seeker, yet I only go in when my GI doc says "You should get evaluated" And calls ahead to them to let them know I'm coming in. So I understand, totally. With the GastroParesis, In the last year and a half i've lost over 120lbs, I went from 250 to 130. That's really rapid, i've had feeding tube threats, But I managed to keep it at bay by drinking these Special K protein drinks, I know you can't keep things down often, but that helped me greatly prevented a surgery even. Edit: I forgot to mention, Thanks for showing me that you can still be happy even though you are disabled, I've felt like a hindrance on my family since I was 14 when I first got sick. Thank You.

Shawn -- I'm much older than you, 55, & was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease 5 yrs ago. I also have fibromyalgia, degenerative disc disease, Lymphedema in my legs, & severe osteoarthritis in both knees, feet & ankles; 1/2 my left foot & big toe, 2nd & 3rd toes amputated @ age 4 in lawnmower accident; can't walk w/o a walker . I take pain medication too, & last year my doctor cut my dose in 1/2 because of the DEA...it's been terrible for me because the dosage now doesn't relieve my pain & I can't sleep...I can relate to what you're going thru...it's really, really difficult physically and mentally...
I'm glad you're feeling better today! Also the shirts are so comfortable! Something I haven't really mentioned before, I'm really thankful for you and your inspiration! Although I'm not chronically ill, I've been getting really bad migraines for two months straight (just about), with maybe like 3 or 4 days within those two months that I haven't had any at all, maybe just a small headache. You talking about how you deal with your health honestly has helped me get through the pain. I'm trying to set realistic goals for me that don't make my migraines/headaches worse, it makes me feel better that I've done some things, or as much as I can without being in a lot of pain, despite certain family members getting mad that I don't do a lot lol. RebeccaBeckery I've been in the same situation lately. When I have a bad head day, I've taken Jacquie's advice like setting realistic goals or just appreciating my body's small wins more.
When we used to be the one doing it all and then something happens to us to make that no longer possible it is so hard. We feel bad enough as it is, but then to have family resent it or downplay it makes us feel guilty and depressed. Hang in there, you are not alone. We do what we can and those who truly love us understand. And some just need more time to process things. It is ok. We are here with you and for you.

I haven't really been able to find anything to help the pain yet because I can't afford to get medical help yet (hopefully I can get my medical card soon) But that's the main reason I had said I didn't have chronic illnesses, because I haven't been "officially" diagnosed haha. Hi Jaquie! I was wondering if you watch the show Big Brother? There is a "houseguest" on this season (Raven) who has gastroparesis and talks about it a little bit on the show. She made light of GP awareness month a couple times as well :) I thought that was kind of cool.

I just want to say you're such an inspiration to me. I don't suffer with physical illness as much as mental so I relate to a lot of things you post like doing what you can. Even though I don't have chronic illnesses like yours you make me want to try harder each day. I also really wanted to say you treat Harlow amazing and I love the positivity. You treat her like family where I feel some people don't do that as much. If you don't read this that's okay but I'm always watching to see how you're doing and you inspire me every day.

everyone has issues! playing "pain and suffering olympics" is never good for anyone. it's okay to feel bad about your life (though it isn't fun), everyone has some kind of something and as long as you don't say "ha, mine's worse than you so i win!" about anything, it's okay to not be totally happy with the cards you've been dealt. jaquie and i have a lot of the same chronic illnesses, though she has a much tougher time than i do with many things, but i know neither her nor i nor anyone with a chronic illness would compare ourselves to one another. sorry that this is so long, but i wanted to let you know that it's okay to be upset with life sometimes. it happens to all of us. as long as you don't complain about something like a paper cut and say it's worse than something like cancer, you know? :) hope that made sense lol.

Jaquie you are one very brave woman. I am 49 and do not have half as many things going on as you do and as school begins for my kids again on Monday I will be left home alone for 9 hours a day, and it terrifies me. As a mother I should be strong for my kids. I used to be. Since my mobility has gotten worse my fears and anxieties have grown. You and Harlow help me and others more than you know. Thank you. I will try to be braver and conquer my fears. My husband needs me, my kids need me. Lol good thing my bossy cat and Yorkie girls stay right with me. They help me so much. Hi so I love your channel and I have pots to am 13 and it sucks sometimes o have two dogs and one of them , my male dog liono, will sometimes will alert me by get up on my lap ( he is not a lap dog ) or he will nudge me like Harlow did to you and when you mentioned fatigue I had a really bad pots/fatigue day at school and when I got home I just layed in the floor and my dog came up and layed his head on my chest and kept me from get up .! Oh and he is not trained at all !
it is such a great thing that she can give you 15 minute warning vs. your 1 or so. if not for her you might not have known until you were on the steps and that could have led to a fall down the steps and serious injury. so glad she was able to prevent that.
I bawl my eyes out every time I watch your vids because it makes me so happy to see people like me who aren't in the miserable, impoverished situation so many of us are in. I am honestly so glad you have access to the care you need. I have narcolepsy with moderate-severe cataplexy, so when I experience certain emotions too strongly I have a sort of "concious fainting spell" where I lose muscle tone and can end up falling and injuring myself on top of the sleep attacks, and my meds for other chronic illnesses I have make me extremely lightheaded and prone to blacking out... I take inspiration from you so I can try to pull myself out of poverty and hopefully be able to afford my own service dog before the narcolepsy gets too bad. The first step is to keep appealing for disability until they stop denying me, but I am making progress!I've started setting more realistic goals, and it has definitely helped my mental health to say that I succeeded at them by the end of the day. And when I sometimes end up unable to meet them, my boyfriend is there to support me. Thank you for being here and giving me hope that I won't succumb to my health issues in the end. ❤One day I will be able to afford all of the medications and care that I need as long as I keep moving forward.
I used to have a helicopter like that. My mom stopped buying them for me cause I wasn't good at driving them and ended up smashing them into walls and stuff. I think I went through three of them then she just said no to getting them. Also side note I love your vlogs😍

I think after the nose bump she gave you a concerned look repeatedly.It is amazing how intone Harlow is to your illnesses. I imagine she smells the changes in your odor, ( not saying you smell) meaning the changes in your blood sugar and the scent are body releases when you are in a medical situation. Have you noticed if there is a difference in the way she stares when you have a pots/fainting episode vs anaphalactic episode stare or bump? When you screamed with the helicopter going into the bookcase we could see Harlow having a fright. We know you were fine but I don't think Harlow knew. I am just happy Harlow is paying attention to your needs. I love seeing the connection the two of you have. The flower pants are adorable. I can't reemember if you got them at Target or Walmart. Hey Jaquie! I was wondering if you could answer this question for me because I feel that you're very knowledgeable on this subject. So a girl at my school has a service dog that can sense when she's going to have a seizure. So today when I walked into the lunch room I saw her dog roaming around without her or any of her aids. Luckily right after seeing her dog I noticed her owner around ten feet away and our school nurse and her aid were helping her into a wheelchair. I didn't approach her dog because I didn't wanna distract her, but I kept my distance and just kept an eye on her because the room was crowded and I didn't want anyone touching or approaching her. Eventually the aid finally brought her back over to her girl. I was just wondering what to do in a situation where a service dog is without their owner? Was what I did in that situation right? Like for example if I saw Harlow but you were no where in sight, which I imagine would be an emergency situation, what should I do? Thank you so much in advance if you see this and have enough energy to answer 💕❤️

Jaquie, I have cronic depression and anxiety attacks, and I think the Realistic Goals you mentioned will work a lot for my self esteem and frustration. I am not as productive as I want to be and am always frustrated. I will try this method!
I know that you don't have a PO box, for obvious reasons, but what if you got one, we ordered items online, and had them sent to the box? Then there would be less of a hazard to your immune system, and we could still send stuff.

Hey Jaquie. I'm a recent subscriber. I started watching your videos for research, as I've been thinking about getting a service dog. My biggest fear about getting one was the dog "washing out", as people put it. But after seeing something like this (as I have had syncope/near syncope episodes) I'm beginning to see that the benefits can outweigh the risks, so thank you.
Rachael Bonomo no problem, glad I could help! But you are right, the risk of washing out is very, very real. It is good to know the pros and cons before going in. I recommend watching my service dog 101 video if you have not already. (:

I know what it's like to have chronic pain alot, I'm 22 yrs old. I have Ulcerative Colitis, gastro-paresis, IBS-D and arthritis in both knees and ankles. I'm on 2mg dilaudid tablets and a 75mcg fentanyl patch. I'm 22 man, my doctor says "I have 80 year olds on less pain medication than you". But The pain meds keep me out of the emergency room where they seem to just think I'm a drug seeker, yet I only go in when my GI doc says "You should get evaluated" And calls ahead to them to let them know I'm coming in. So I understand, totally. With the GastroParesis, In the last year and a half i've lost over 120lbs, I went from 250 to 130. That's really rapid, i've had feeding tube threats, But I managed to keep it at bay by drinking these Special K protein drinks, I know you can't keep things down often, but that helped me greatly prevented a surgery even.
Edit: I forgot to mention, Thanks for showing me that you can still be happy even though you are disabled, I've felt like a hindrance on my family since I was 14 when I first got sick. Thank You.
Shawn , I hope one day there will be medicine to help you. My dear husband had Ulcerative Colitis and he suffered so much from that awful disease. Just wanted you to know at least one person out here doesn't think you're a drug seeker. Good Luck son.
Shawn -- I'm much older than you, 55, & was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease 5 yrs ago. I also have fibromyalgia, degenerative disc disease, Lymphedema in my legs, & severe osteoarthritis in both knees, feet & ankles; 1/2 my left foot & big toe, 2nd & 3rd toes amputated @ age 4 in lawnmower accident; can't walk w/o a walker . I take pain medication too, & last year my doctor cut my dose in 1/2 because of the DEA...it's been terrible for me because the dosage now doesn't relieve my pain & I can't sleep...I can relate to what you're going thru...it's really, really difficult physically and mentally...
You need to ask your doc to be sent to a PAIN doctor, not just a family doc.
I'm glad you're feeling better today! Also the shirts are so comfortable! Something I haven't really mentioned before, I'm really thankful for you and your inspiration! Although I'm not chronically ill, I've been getting really bad migraines for two months straight (just about), with maybe like 3 or 4 days within those two months that I haven't had any at all, maybe just a small headache. You talking about how you deal with your health honestly has helped me get through the pain. I'm trying to set realistic goals for me that don't make my migraines/headaches worse, it makes me feel better that I've done some things, or as much as I can without being in a lot of pain, despite certain family members getting mad that I don't do a lot lol. Hey, chronic migraines are a form of chronic pain! It can be debilitating so I know you are trying very hard. Hang in there, I hope you can find some relief!

RebeccaBeckery I've been in the same situation lately. When I have a bad head day, I've taken Jacquie's advice like setting realistic goals or just appreciating my body's small wins more.
When we used to be the one doing it all and then something happens to us to make that no longer possible it is so hard. We feel bad enough as it is, but then to have family resent it or downplay it makes us feel guilty and depressed. Hang in there, you are not alone. We do what we can and those who truly love us understand. And some just need more time to process things. It is ok. We are here with you and for you.

I haven't really been able to find anything to help the pain yet because I can't afford to get medical help yet (hopefully I can get my medical card soon) But that's the main reason I had said I didn't have chronic illnesses, because I haven't been "officially" diagnosed haha. But thank you for all your support guys!
Hi Jaquie! I was wondering if you watch the show Big Brother? There is a "houseguest" on this season (Raven) who has gastroparesis and talks about it a little bit on the show. She made light of GP awareness month a couple times as well :) I thought that was kind of cool.

I just want to say you're such an inspiration to me. I don't suffer with physical illness as much as mental so I relate to a lot of things you post like doing what you can. Even though I don't have chronic illnesses like yours you make me want to try harder each day. I also really wanted to say you treat Harlow amazing and I love the positivity. You treat her like family where I feel some people don't do that as much. If you don't read this that's okay but I'm always watching to see how you're doing and you inspire me every day.
I loved how when the helicopter took off and you screamed Harlow immediately went to investigate and brought it to you like "look mom, it's okay, it's just a toy" hahaha aww

everyone has issues! playing "pain and suffering olympics" is never good for anyone. it's okay to feel bad about your life (though it isn't fun), everyone has some kind of something and as long as you don't say "ha, mine's worse than you so i win!" about anything, it's okay to not be totally happy with the cards you've been dealt. jaquie and i have a lot of the same chronic illnesses, though she has a much tougher time than i do with many things, but i know neither her nor i nor anyone with a chronic illness would compare ourselves to one another. sorry that this is so long, but i wanted to let you know that it's okay to be upset with life sometimes. it happens to all of us. as long as you don't complain about something like a paper cut and say it's worse than something like cancer, you know? :) hope that made sense lol.
My son has one of those toys and you did fine with it. Lol!! You had the same reaction I did to it. You know it is going to move, but it still startles you.😄
Great job to Harlow!! Jaquie you are one very brave woman. I am 49 and do not have half as many things going on as you do and as school begins for my kids again on Monday I will be left home alone for 9 hours a day, and it terrifies me. As a mother I should be strong for my kids. I used to be. Since my mobility has gotten worse my fears and anxieties have grown. You and Harlow help me and others more than you know. Thank you. I will try to be braver and conquer my fears. My husband needs me, my kids need me. Lol good thing my bossy cat and Yorkie girls stay right with me. They help me so much. Not as actively as Harlow but I would be lost without them. Thanks for "listening". Goodnight.

Hi so I love your channel and I have pots to am 13 and it sucks sometimes o have two dogs and one of them , my male dog liono, will sometimes will alert me by get up on my lap ( he is not a lap dog ) or he will nudge me like Harlow did to you and when you mentioned fatigue I had a really bad pots/fatigue day at school and when I got home I just layed in the floor and my dog came up and layed his head on my chest and kept me from get up .! Oh and he is not trained at all !
it is such a great thing that she can give you 15 minute warning vs. your 1 or so. if not for her you might not have known until you were on the steps and that could have led to a fall down the steps and serious injury. so glad she was able to prevent that.
Harlow is a very good dog,can you give tip how you learn harlow to pick her own toy up and the go and fetch the blanket because its so cool ☺

I bawl my eyes out every time I watch your vids because it makes me so happy to see people like me who aren't in the miserable, impoverished situation so many of us are in. I am honestly so glad you have access to the care you need. I have narcolepsy with moderate-severe cataplexy, so when I experience certain emotions too strongly I have a sort of "concious fainting spell" where I lose muscle tone and can end up falling and injuring myself on top of the sleep attacks, and my meds for other chronic illnesses I have make me extremely lightheaded and prone to blacking out... I take inspiration from you so I can try to pull myself out of poverty and hopefully be able to afford my own service dog before the narcolepsy gets too bad. The first step is to keep appealing for disability until they stop denying me, but I am making progress!I've started setting more realistic goals, and it has definitely helped my mental health to say that I succeeded at them by the end of the day. And when I sometimes end up unable to meet them, my boyfriend is there to support me. Thank you for being here and giving me hope that I won't succumb to my health issues in the end. ❤One day I will be able to afford all of the medications and care that I need as long as I keep moving forward.

I used to have a helicopter like that. My mom stopped buying them for me cause I wasn't good at driving them and ended up smashing them into walls and stuff. I think I went through three of them then she just said no to getting them. Also side note I love your vlogs😍

I think after the nose bump she gave you a concerned look repeatedly.It is amazing how intone Harlow is to your illnesses. I imagine she smells the changes in your odor, ( not saying you smell) meaning the changes in your blood sugar and the scent are body releases when you are in a medical situation. Have you noticed if there is a difference in the way she stares when you have a pots/fainting episode vs anaphalactic episode stare or bump? When you screamed with the helicopter going into the bookcase we could see Harlow having a fright. We know you were fine but I don't think Harlow knew. I am just happy Harlow is paying attention to your needs. I love seeing the connection the two of you have. The flower pants are adorable. I can't reemember if you got them at Target or Walmart. Cheers!

Hey Jaquie! I was wondering if you could answer this question for me because I feel that you're very knowledgeable on this subject. So a girl at my school has a service dog that can sense when she's going to have a seizure. So today when I walked into the lunch room I saw her dog roaming around without her or any of her aids. Luckily right after seeing her dog I noticed her owner around ten feet away and our school nurse and her aid were helping her into a wheelchair. I didn't approach her dog because I didn't wanna distract her, but I kept my distance and just kept an eye on her because the room was crowded and I didn't want anyone touching or approaching her. Eventually the aid finally brought her back over to her girl. I was just wondering what to do in a situation where a service dog is without their owner? Was what I did in that situation right? Like for example if I saw Harlow but you were no where in sight, which I imagine would be an emergency situation, what should I do? Thank you so much in advance if you see this and have enough energy to answer 💕❤️
