In this video titled EU4 - What if The Roman Empire Existed in 1444? we take a look at what would happen if one of the most powerful empires in history - The Roman Empire, existed in 1444 / What if The Roman Empire survived until 1444. In this video I created The Roman Empire and gave them every province they had at their historical territorial peak in the years 117 AD. As you can probably guess it resulted in some pretty funny shenanigans. Obviously you would expect that The Roman Empire would dominate and prosper economically, militarily and in trade, but did it really turn out that way? This whole run was controlled by the AI only without my interference and it yielded some pretty interesting results to be honest. So, after watching this video you will know what would happen if The Roman Empire existed in 1444 in Europa Universalis 4. What is the next "What if" scenario that I should do? Leave a comment below!

Well if you ever want to see them collapse or try to survive with them more realistically, there's always the extended timeline mod.

Making them Catholic was a great idea since these borders are before the split between Western Rome and Eastern Rome. Also its hard to argue they should be Orthodox when the capital is still in Rome.
Not to mention the schism happened specifically because of the fall of Rome with a retreat to the East. Also the schism didn't officially happen until the Orthodox temporarily fell into heresy with Iconoclasm. Regardless, before the schism the Patriarchs all viewed the Bishop of Rome as the head of faith as the first among equals although the issue of the level of authority he has over other apostolic-tier clergy did not come up yet.

@@darken2417 The main reason they split was because the pope wanted "special treatment" aka believed he was superior to the other bishops. As you said they always thought of the bishop of Rome as first among EQUALS so that's how it also should have been in the game. Moreover the head of the church was always the emperor and that wouldn't change. If the Roman Empire existed in 1444 there would be no Catholicism or Orthodoxy. There would be a single, main Christian faith similar (not the same) to the orthodox one. Probably even the pentarchy system would have been established granting the 5 patriarchs (of Rome, Constantinople, Antioch, Alexandria and Jerusalem) the management of the church.
Anyways this is just a timelapse and i shouldn't care but I just wanted to highlight that the Roman Empire and the pope can't exist at the same time.

Honestly post 1.31 I feel like the AI has gotten a surprising amount better, usually alot more stable and regions get more properly consolidated

Honestly if the Roman Empire did manage to recover and become strong and capable of expansion again, instead of falling into decline, I would have assumed them to try to take over the British Isles
aswell as pushing further into Germany again. Securing the Arabian gulf by conquering the coast might also be of interest to them, aswell as pushing into the Pontic Steppes, but their main expansion route would have been into Persia and then India.
So overall, pretty similar to how this turned out.
They would have had to deal with the Mongols though so it would be interesting how they fared against that.

I think the issue is you put them in at their territorial peak, they just had enough inertia from that they kept going, steamrolling into Asia especially.

I think the Roman Empire would not have been Catholic, a better example of a scenario would have been to make the Roman Empire Orthodox Christians because the Byzantine Empire is really just the Eastern Roman Empire, they had the closest connection to the Roman Empire. The Holy Roman Empire didn't have any connection to the Roman Empire itself. The most common language and culture in the Roman Empire was Greek and the Byzantines are Greek. Like if you were a Roman in Rome you would speak Latin but outside of Rome Greek was the most spoken language.
Or even better, make them hellenic, like they were in 117 AD, since in this video they were given their 117 AD borders.
in history the roman empire was catholic a few hundred years before they colapse. an empreor converted them too be, but it was not the entire nation itself. too much religions and too many different cultures, and corupt politicians made them colaps in the end. just too much of everything.
