Thank you for the help. Got the printer open and found a couple of gears rolling around. Now that I'm positive it's not a paper jam, I'll be doing a little more diagnostic research. This time in the garage with a 20 pound sledge!

hi thanks so much for the video. I had a bad paper jam and while trying to clear the paper the head moved over and wadded the paper under the head. Now it tells me the head is bad. So i have to take it apart. I may have to go deeper into the disassembly but your video gets me started. 😁

    Thanks a lot!!!
This tutorial helped me disassemble my printer with much ease! I looked for a trick for turning the scanner-plate 90 degrees, but couldn't find it! :)
My printer head was stuck on the right, and i had the blue "C10xxxx" message. After opening it, i removed the colors and the printer head, got them all clean (and also the optic-line), and now the printer works again!
    Thanks again :)

@alwaysafix: You are the man. Salute!
I tore it down to find out the exact same problem. At least HP is willing to warranty their products. You just have to run the tier 1 gamut to get someone willing to listen to you and get a manager to actually listen to the words out of your mouth instead of just running the flow charts.
I have a replacement headed my way.

Thank you so much for the detailed approach to opening this printer without damaging it. Am I able to put power to the unit before I reassemble to see if the ink carriage will move from being stuck all the way to the right? If nothing else I'll remove the heads to transplant into another printer. But I'd like to get this one working as well.

Thanks so much for the tips. Mine was nasty from never getting cleaned. Once I removed the print head and cleaned it with bleach and water then sun dried I also needed to clean the rollers under it as well as the docking chamber - and it was just nasty. In order to do this comfortably I needed to raise the cover to 90 degrees so everything was easy to access. I am back in business again.

I have what I believe is a paper sensor problem. The pickup rollers come down but will not roll when paper is in the tray (getting a load paper message every time). But when I remove the paper, the printer rollers come down and they DO roll. I've cleaned, did all types of resets, including factory restore, so upon speaking with HP (my unit is out of warranty), it appears I may have a sensor problem. (I caused this by pulling a sheet back out of paper tray while it was beginning to print. Note to self: never do this again!). I'm somewhat handy, so I looked at your video and was wondering if you had any advice on locating and repairing or replacing the sensor.

Hi Jon, like Shirley, my feeder mechanism gears seem stripped now too and won't turn the wheels to feed the paper to the next position which leads to other wheels turning and printing. It happened when some sheets got stuck but not far enough to clear them from the back or didn't seem to be. Anyway, I thought I just had to pull them out the front like I have with older hp printers without incident. This time no, and it wouldn't page feed after forcing the stuck paper out the front, indicating I stripped the gears (most likely plastic) or something, that turns the roller. Why is it so delicate with this 6500 model unlike other models i've had. Darn this 6500 model for allowing that problem and say not using metal gears for page feeding instead of plastic gears. Talk about active planned assisted obsolescence. They should know people will get impatient and just try to pull the papers out the front and not the back and should have used metal gears. I can finger force the stalled paper through to the next position and then press ok to continue, and those gears work find and it prints fine then. But that is a nuisance for a multiple line up of pages to print. I can do it and relatively quickly but obviously I shouldn't have to do that. Once again, darn HP on this model!

alwaysafix Thank you for this video. Very helpful also for disassembly of the HP Officejet 6413 printer as well because the covers are held on in a very similar manner. Had I not seen this I would have spent hours trying to get mine apart.
The mechanism you mentioned that has broken appears to me to be a kind of laterally sliding clutch that engages and disengages onto the paper feed roller and, on the 6413 at least, also slides a print head tray forwards and backwards. What exactly this is doing I am not sure. On mine this seems to be either jammed, or the gears are trying to turn when the tray is at the limit of it's travel.
I'm curious to know exactly where you found the jam that broke your printer as I suspect there may be something similar going on in my printer. The white cog that can be seen in your printer at the side seems to have limits to it's travel - 2 or 3 turns in either direction and I don't know if this is how it should be or not.
    Thanks again.

the carriage on mine is mechanically stuck in it's parking area on the right. I can only push it to the left a fraction. Something under it is stuck to the bottom of the carriage, hitting some other part preventing further carriage movement to the left. Will removing the top housing as you show cuase me to tear up that part stuck to the bottom of the carriage? What is that part called? Can I spray something between the carriage and the other part to loosen them? What caused this to happen? Leaking ink? This printer was running flawlessly until yesterday. I have only used HP Ink.

The mechanism you refer to at the end. This seems to be my problem. When I took it apart it was dislodged from the metal spoke thing and when I put it back on the printer kicks it off again. What is this piece call so i can replace it?

Thanks for the video. It appears that I might have to replace the control board in my 6500 because black ink will not print. I've been through 3 sets of new cartridges running the various cleaning cycles as well as replaced the printhead (after trying to flush the original). But still no black printing. Hi, thank you so much for this video. After opening up my printer. I see no paper obstruction inside the ink carrier since the carrier is stuck on the right position of the printer. However, I see some kind of explosive ink inside the carrier. Is that normal? Is it why the carrier won't shift flowly from right to left? Please reply before I think about buying another printer. I have this eat printer. When i turn it on , it gives me the message of improper shutdown while I didn't improperly shut it down, I actually turned it off by using the power button. Then it starts to make a really weird noise it doesn't pick up paper at all and doesn't even tell me I need to load I just get the message of general error and number code. When I press ok they tell me to reset the printer and then when I press done it cancels the print and the error message shows up again repeatedly. (which I've tried multiple times) and can't seem to understand what is happening. I've still used it a couple of days ago and it was printing fine..any help? Before I go out and buy a new one...

Archibald Hutchinson Hello Archibald, if you hear grinding and can feed 1 page manually, it may be a stripped plastic gear on the feeder. I found 1 video with the proper diagnosis for my printer. I used an epoxy glue on it once and worked fine for a couple of pages. I'm still working on a more permanent fix, i.e. different glue type or... The FIY Video the helped me was by thomas griffin. One suggestion, the use of a mirror is required to glue the gear to the rod. Since other gears and moving parts are in close proximity and the mirror reflection is backwards, practice a few times without glue to get a feel for it. Also, using your fingers move the gear over exposing the teeth on the rod, apply glue with a makeshift applicator, then push the gear back with your finger tips. You will understand after trying yourself a few times. Good luck!

Thanks for the video. I too have this model, it's only about 18 months old, but there's now an issue; maybe you can help.
When the actual ink printing begins it seems that the paper being fed isn't in sync with the printing.
When viewing the results a lot of the printed lines, at the top of the page, are on top of each other repeating over and over. All of the lines are bunched up towards the top, and even a half line, showing the printing is ahead of the paper itself.
And towards the bottom end of the page, the printed lines end about 3/4 of the way down.
So, it seems the printing starts too early, gets hung up while still printing, and ends way too early.
    Hope you understand.
    Thank you,
    Giovanni

+sweetheart6218 With the printer powered off and unplugged if you shine a torch to the bottom left of the printhead you will see a small plastic catch that holds the printhead in place while it is being cleaned. I disassembled my printer as shown on the video. Then I found a tiny metal clip that has escaped from its location. And a plastic part like a pendulum with a gearing wheel is not fixed anymore. This is on the bottom right of the printhead. So is that a cause or a consequence of the stuck ? I don't know. But I don't know either where the clip comes from and how to fix it... Any help will be welcome ! Thanks in advance.

My printer HP OJ 6500A will no longer feed paper from the paper tray. I cleaned all the rollers. There is a roller that drops down onto the paper when you initiate a print job and it sounds as if it should feed, but it does not and then I get an out of paper message. I did all the troubleshooting steps in the HP video (reset power, clean rollers, etc). Should I bother with trying to fix this? The printer is four years old. Thanks!

+Lori Rose In your case ,the printer does not pick up the paper ,try to put a mirror size as your hand at the paper tray and under the arm has two wheel, using flashlight direct at the mirror ,you will see the first wheel slip out of the shaft teeth, causing all the wheel not engage to turn, and so the roller two wheel not turn, and so the paper not forward, you try using one drop of supper glue at the shaft teeth, move the first gear to the right back to the shaft teeth and line up with other gears, wait 1/2 hour for the glue dry out complete ,and try test print with the mirror still under the wheel arm to see the all wheels must be turn.Good luck.

+Lori Rose In my opinion if the pick up roller is not turning don't waste your time recycle and purchase a new printer.

    • @rudybickel4068
      @rudybickel4068 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

+cuong le You are exactly correct, that is just what is happening.
The metal shaft has shallow teeth to engage the center of the plastic drive gear that rotates with it, and it is slipping in one direction and not turning that gear, so it is not turning the rest of the gears that are involved in picking up the paper. In the other direction of rotation, the metal shaft engages the plastic drive gear briefly at the end of the cycle, but it has already missed moving the paper. The center of the plastic drive gear on the metal shaft has doubtless worn a bit with use. The gear train that ends up moving the paper turns easily both ways and is not itself jammed.
I will get some super glue, tap the plastic gear aside to the left to the smooth part of the shaft, put the super glue on the shallow teeth of the shaft, tap the gear back in place to the right to be over the shaft teeth and lined up as you suggested, wait for the super glue to dry and hold the gear, and I think that will do it. Thank you, cuong le!

    I have a review for the 6500
WARNING !!!! This printer is the slowest most problematic printer I have ever had the misfortune of being on the operating end of. I've never wanted to smash something so bad ever in my life. it's the company printer and I'd lose my job. but almost every time I operate this printer it is slow and jams or just sits there for minutes at a time just making clicking and roller noises. every time I use this I risk losing my job. The Boss told us he wont buy another HP so hopefully it will break soon and we can replace it with a real printer

Do you have a video on removing the bottom part of HP6500A Plus? I have pickup issues that none if regular fixes do not work. Printer makes a lot of noise when it tries to pick up paper. I think some gears are stripped in the bottom paper feed roller. That is what I need to get apart. Any help appreciated.

Hi Gary did you ever figure this out I am having the same problem and trying to figure out the best way to remove it to get the bottom. My printer works other than that. It is the first little gear in the front where paper feeds in. As soon as paper is in there it does not pick it up. Did you ever figure out how to get to that part. Ours is out of warranty and hubby is technical so we are trying to save a bunch of money fixing ourselves. Please message me or if anyone has had this problem has fixed it by there selves please message me so we can get it fixed.

jon broder If the pick up roller is not spinning, then some of the gearing is damaged, making this a very difficult near to impossible repair. You might need to start looking at a new replacement printer.

Upon removing the rear horse leg part over main shaft (the one not present @5:03 in video) , removed metal retainer clip and narrow black gear. The gear is cracked from center out increasing the gap between 2 teeth and limiting the gear rotation to less than one revolution. Looking for new gear anyone.

This is the same problem I had with my HP 6500 printer. The gear inside the clutch assembly cracked and was no longer able to grasp the gears.I tried gluing it, but it just wouldn't hold onto the gear. You could try to find the gear itself and try replacing it that way, but I found that the gear was on way too tight to try it that way. I tore my printer down to the bottom and replaced the whole clutch. I found it on Ebay. I looked in the US but couldn't find one. I found the whole clutch gear in China. It was $18-19 (Best offer submitted). There was only one listing on Ebay. www.ebay.com/itm/Clutch-Drive-Gear-Kit-for-HP-OfficeJet-6000-6500-6500A-7000-7110-Printer-Parts-/182066425074?hash=item2a64012cf2 I hope this helps someone.
