Turn a photo into an illustration! Threshold by Path in Photoshop 2019

  • A vector image made with Path or Shape can reduce the file size and has the advantage of being able to cope with any document size without degradation. However, making complex artwork with Path or Shape requires both techniques and time. For example, you can easily make Path or Shape from the selection obtained with "Threshold" so you can achieve smooth pure black and white conversion without jaggies.
    Contents:
    00:00 Introduction.
    01:41 Crop the image.
    03:06 Creates a selection of dark areas.
    06:05 Creates a path from a selection.
    07:40 Create a shape from a path.

    Exactly what I was looking for - thanks so much! The best solution to smoothing threshold I'd found prior to this was blurring and then adjusting curves or levels to resharpen the edges, but detail is lost via that method. This, on the other hand, works perfectly!

    I am going to try your technique and thank you for sharing your video. What is the resolution set for at 3:02 and how big can this b&w image be scaled for printing?

    • @psgips
      @psgips  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no limit to the scaling of the image after it is completed. Because it's a vector image built with Path. Therefore, setting 300 pixels/inch, which is the resolution for printing, does not cause any problem. You should be careful about color mode conversion. Thank you!

    it's okay to rasterize the vector? it ask me to do so when i want to edit it. thanks for your video it's help

    • @psgips
      @psgips  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your kind comment. It's okay to rasterize. However, do so only after you have sized it for the finished product. That's because rasterization determines the current number of pixels. Alternatively, you can save the vector as the original file in PSD format and then output it in rasters such as JPEG format or PNG format.

      In the Layers panel, Select [Color Fill].
      [File]-[Export]-[Paths to Illustrator].

    how do you work with a low resolution picture or snapshot from a video? Threshold seems to struggle with less detail available.

    • @psgips
      @psgips  ปีที่แล้ว

      Since it will be difficult at low resolutions, why not try upsampling? Preserve Details 2.0 enables highly accurate upsampling. For example, even a 1600% enlargement would give good results. I hope you will go well.

    • @KeyIntelMedia
      @KeyIntelMedia ปีที่แล้ว

      @@psgips tried upsampling but I really didnt see any dramatic effect with these screenshots from a youtube video. Like for example applying oil paint filter has virtually no effect I guess because not enough detail to find the contrast areas. Not sure.

    • @psgips
      @psgips  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KeyIntelMedia Even a slight difference in gradation can be divided into black and white. Because there are 256 levels of grayscale. If the detail is not appropriate, the only thing you can do is change the subject material itself. I hope you will go well.
