    Somebody told Chicago about VoicePlay's version of Nothing Else Matters. Chicago was impressed, contacted them and invited them to join them on stage for their Chicago and Friends concert (last) Nov 17-18, which they did. When the Chicago stage manager was getting everything set up, he asked Eli where the drum kit should go. Eli just pointed at Layne and said "He's it!" So all those people that on hearing that VoicePlay was doing this one and saying it couldn't be done, had to eat their words. It's up to 3.5 M these days. VoicePlay has VioLayne who on 3 occasions has played the violin. First one was Warriors (Imagine Dragons) Layne did full-on for the piece and J None has done a couple of violin lines in this one as well. Next was this one here. Lastly he did some in The Lion Sleeps Tonight. The lighting is Eli's beauty and in tribute to Metallica's Black Album with the black clothing, black stage and background with the edison lights.

    They provided the nay sayers wrong when they were told this song couldn't be done Acapella. VioLayne at the end is icing on the cake.

    There isn't anything Voiceplay does that I don't really love, but this one I rank as one of their real masterpieces. And that is hard to decide considering, as I said, all their works are really quality .
    Great response and reaction.

      How about their newest: Classical Chaos. That gives you a view into Layne's mind. It's great and so much in it that I never knew. Elizabeth Zharoff (The Charismatic Voice) did a short interview with Layne about this. It's amazing how much went into this.

    I've noticed something. Most of the guys use their hands when they sing. Layne mimics the beats he's making, for ex. he'll move his hand for each snare beat or shake side to side if it's fast paced. Geoff's hands mimic his voice, going up, down, sliding, etc. Eli's hands kind of show his intensity, any time he belts he holds his hands up in front of him. The higher his hands and more tense his fingers are the higher his voice usually is. J None is expressive with his whole body when he sings, his hands just dance to the music. Caesar though, I don't think I've ever really seen him moving his hands around unless it's for a character. When you mentioned how still he was I was watching and thinking. I think Caesar's thing is his head and upper body. He was bobbing his head a bit in this one, and usually he's doing some kind of bob, roll, chin tilt, or his shoulders are moving. He's very theatrical when he's singing, I think.

    This is EPIC! Never have been a huge rock fan Metallica or otherwise, Somehow VP takes these songs I've never been a fan of, regardless of how amazing they may be, and make them live in my heart. This, Dream On, and Black Hole Sun were al meh to me originally but are some of my favorite VP songs. It must be something about the human voice that gets me more than a guitar.

    VioLayne did his first appearance in Warriors, which remains one of my favorites. J None also plays a bit in Warriors. My understanding is that Layne uses his concert violin to record these (rare) Voiceplay pieces, and the one you see is his "stunt violin" that he uses for filming. (A lucky thing, because he dropped it many times while trying to catch it here). So if the tone sounds rough, I suspect that's in his technique. He sounds very different here than in Warriors. If this makes any sense... to me, his violin sounds much like a human singing voice in Warriors, while here in NEM the group changes their tone to sound like violins. I didn't know any of that was possible until I heard it...

    • @bethjeans3780
      @bethjeans3780 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I thought they reversed Layne tossing the violin away to make it look like he’s catching it. Or am I disremembering?

    • @Aurora-cv5to
      @Aurora-cv5to หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@bethjeans3780 I read that from one commenter too, but didn't see it confirmed. I don't know. The fact that the stunt violin was dropped frequently, however, is well established: since my comment was about the violins, not Layne's prowess in catching them, I left it out.

    I am very old and missed the Metallica era. Didn't matter, of course, because it's Voiceplay. This had me mesmerized for weeks. Voiceplay has a way of enunciating lyrics so that you can understand not only the words but the meaning of the words. I love it.

    My absolute favourite - brilliant arrangement by Geoff. Layne can beatbox and play at the same time but he says it looks bad, so he opted not to do the beatboxing for the video whilst playing. Violayne is awesome. Glad you got to this one! 🌹🕊

    This is the first song I ever heard from Voiceplay. I was instantly hooked. I’ve also witnessed that this cover is a common “gateway drug” among a lot of reactors as well

  • @DTA-Music
    @DTA-Music หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    This one sort of sneaks up on you. It's not uncommon for their arrangements to start out slow and subdued, then build toward a climax that knocks your socks off, but it's especially pronounced here. I've seen quite a few 'Metallica sung a capella?' skeptics start out unimpressed by the opener, but wind up fully won over by the end.

  • @acorrado5529

    I really enjoyed your enthusiastic reaction and informative analysis- thanks! I thought Geoff's arrangement here was stunning and I like it better than the original. I have not heard any comments from members of Metallica about this cover but a reactor recently showed it to Metallica's tour manager and he seemed indifferent to it. Members of legendary band, 'Chicago', saw this cover and liked it so much they reached out to Voice Play and Voice Play sang two concerts with 'Chicago' back in November. Yes, we love the rare moments that beatboxer, Layne, sings or plays the violin (he has played violin since childhood) and we nicknamed Layne "Violayne". You would also really enjoy Voice Play's cover of "Warriors" as both Layne and J None play violins in that one.

    • @DravenGal

      That was Joel's video, right? I saw that. As soon as the manager heard the words "Acappella cover," it was like an iron curtain slammed down over his face, and "Give me an eye-roll, without actually DOING an eye-roll." He didn't give them a chance, at ALL. He was impressed by Geoff (how can anyone NOT be?), but reluctantly, and ignored the inarguably beautiful voices and excellent vocal percussion. "It was interesting." Really, Dude? Everyone knows what that means. In the few less-than-excited reactors I've ever seen doing Voiceplay covers for the first time, _every single one_ has at least been conscious of those elements, even when they didn't care for the cover of whatever song. And those reactors? I went back to some of them a couple years later, and they raved about Voiceplay. It was interesting.
      I can kinda relate to that. The first time I saw a snippet of VP's POTO, me being a rather snobby Phan (who saw it with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman), I didn't like it, because I failed to notice it was Acapella and didn't appreciate covers as much. Then I saw "This Is Halloween" and loved it, got a taste of VP's style, and went back and watched POTO, with a new appreciation for it. It's now my second favorite version. 💙

      @@DravenGal Yeah, I like Joel's channel (Party Like A Rock Star) and like his Voice Play reactions and some of his guests reactions. The stage manager for Aerosmith really liked Voice Play's cover of "Dream On" and seems like a really nice man judging from his other guest reactions. Metallica's tour manager did not seem open to any covers of any other artists and did not appreciate anything acapella (attitude at mention of Pentatonix as well).

    Welcome to the world of VioLayne. I would still LOVE to see a collab between Layne and Lindsey Stirling with or without all of Voiceplay

  • @lkayh
    @lkayh หลายเดือนก่อน

    This is why we call him VioLayne! He doesn’t do it often but we get treated now and then. In this case I read that Geoff had originally thought they’d do the guitar solo vocally (and I’d love to hear what that would sound like) but ultimately asked Layne to see what he could do-which was actually a brilliant choice in terms of impact and sound.
    Agree about Cesar. He was unusually still and very somber. I actually wondered if something happened off set, but it was appropriate for the song, so it might have just been a choice.
    If you read the last part of the description for every song, it says “Voiceplay is a… QUINTET.” They’ve never changed it, and I think that’s no mistake. They still think of J.None as a member. I think we have one more year before his time in the Navy is done, and I hope it’s a given he’ll come back.
    Loved this reaction!! I know you’re not a metal fan (nor am I) but I really want to see a cold (NO RESEARCH) reaction to JINJER’s Pisces Live Session. Some of the things you talk about here-apart from a big surprise early in the song, there’s a lot I think you’d love and enjoy analyzing.

    A little trivia. When James Hetfield wrote this song, he was originally afraid to bring it to the rest of the group because it was so different than what they usually do. He was afraid they wouldn't like it & wouldn't want to record it. The story about that is in the video they did on The Howard Stern Show when they sang this with Miley Cyrus. Check it out. Would also LOOOOVE to see you do reactions to metal/glam metal "hair bands". Daniel! We'd like to introduce you to VioLayne! He doesn't show up often, but it's always a treat when it does I don't think I knew there was such as a thing as a electric violin before I saw Voiceplay's cover of Warriors. I hate to spoil the surprise, but it looks like it's been mentioned, so I'll add J. None plays the violin a bit in it too! And another song I WON'T spoil the surprise on. But I will say it also has J. None. Cesar and J. None is my favorite VP lineup, but there's only been one EVER I wasn't all that fond of. Their guest just gave me odd vibes. Probably my fault. It was great singing, mind you. There was just...something. I don't know.💙

      This isn't the first time I've seen someone remark on how Cesar's stillness draws the eye (especially if you're familiar with the group; he's usually so animated and bouncy!) and helps set the somber tone of the piece.
