Cesar asked to do that high note and he nailed it.

In an interview Cesar said they actually also stopped singing on the breaks - it was just "cleaned up a bit" afterwards.
He also did the highest note at the end because he wanted to and Eli said Go For It!
The ONLY reason they use a bit of post production is because they compete against instrumented music to be on people's playlists. They try to keep it to a minimum and only where they feel it enhances / is necessary in the song.
If you ever listen to any of their live stuff you will hear how good they are as is!
Great rendition - thanks for your reactions. 🌹🕊

This arrangement is just stunning! They give it such a different vibe. Geoff, Layne, and Eli are all in their early 40's. The way they sing "The past is gone", especially the last one, all in unison, gives it such a deeper meaning. The raw emotion is there, not like the original, but still wonderful.
Any of the three could have hit the highest note. It would normally have gone to the featured artist, but it's not him. Eli is singing the lowest harmony, Omar is in the middle and Cesar hits the highest note. Omar and Cesar are great friends, Omar wanted him to do it.

ALways love to hear opera singers react, so thanks.

We all thought we’d hear Eli hit those high notes since he’s the group’s rock tenor-and I’d actually love to hear him do it-but CESAR doing it was the first time I realized how crazy his range is. Since then we’ve heard him hit a D flippin’ SIX in The Lion Sleeps Tonight. And if you want an electric guitar sound, after Hellfire we know he can do that too. I love that Eli let him do it-the man doesn’t have to be the big star in this, which says a lot for him, but his lovely, clean riffs and that gritty tenor-I’m always super happy to hear him let loose.
WhatitDoDave says that Layne’s crazy sound in this sounds like a velociraptor and now I can’t unhear that. LOL. Geoff’s “bass guitar” sound really gave this whole thing a great foundation. And Omar-dang, that guy has perfect riffs, and I just love his sound.
Anyway, great reaction/analysis. And TBH, I also prefer to hear the magic of the human voice, without the “extra” stuff done in post, although I get that this is a stylistic choice and they really like to play with it. Part of the wonder of acapella is the audience thinking “HOW did he just do that with just his mouth and body?”

Your description of a capella music seems to be the best description of Voiceplay. With VP I sometimes think it's not 5 incredible good singers/performers coming together to make great music, but one voice that had splitted up and wants to be one voice again.

The building VoicePlay is doing this in was Eli's abandoned high school. Layne swallowed a helicopter!

I really love what they did with this! I was a teenager in the ‘70s and this song seemed to be about the infinite possibilities to come. VoicePlay has made it more introspective and it feels to me more about perseverance and NOT giving up on your dreams - even though you are no longer young. I’m now in my ‘60s and that message makes this so much more meaningful to my here and now! I must admit that a lot of the lyrics just washed over me in my youth, but hit home even harder now with their cover version.

I should add that I am shocked to realize just how meaningful this is with age - especially considering just how young Aerosmith was when it was written.

Since the pandemic and then newborn children, Voiceplay has transitioned from a live band into more of a studio band. They have increasingly been exploring more post production effects. I have mixed feelings on this. Their raw talent is what made Voiceplay my favorite band. However, I am really starting to appreciate the new musical landscapes they have been showcasing in their latter work

VoicePlay made this a follow up to their Warriors video, with a post apocalytic feel. Which fits the words superbly. It's Cesar who won the fight for that high noted. Three of them could have done it but Cesar really wanted to try. And of course these guys, or some of the, are old enough to have lines on their faces. :) I like that they don't have a strong vibrato, No a big fan of vibrato myself. We don't know what Layne looked like doing "that" sound as he cheated in the filming. He said he looked too ridiculous doing it. :)

They really did a beautiful job with this song. Yes, they can be quite silly a lot of the time, but it is never a silliness that comes at the cost of the quality of the music, and in this one... they just set out to make an amazing cover of a beautiful song, and they excelled at doing so.

I adore your reactions! In no small part due to your literal reactions-when Geoff first came in and you cried "Oh my God!" my husband had just walked past my door, but he popped his head in with his eyebrows practically up to his hairline. It made me laugh. But your appreciation of this cosmic group is so satisfying. Hey, has anyone mentioned to you that Omar and Cesar are best friends? It definitely adds something to their singing together. And I know what you're saying about the audio FX, but I still think they sound SO FLUFFNG COOL! 💙

The use of effects was a raging debate when I was doing a cappella. (Maybe when you were too, so sorry if you've heard all this before.) I used to be very against them. This was partly because people in general and myself particularly were less educated about vocal effects and I thought if we used them, everyone who heard our recordings would assume we were covering up for not being able to execute ourselves, and partly because I was fairly purist about the art form I'd grown up listening to in the 90s.
The argument I heard a lot was that using effects in a cappella was like electric vs. acoustic guitar. Undoubtedly a different sound--not better or worse, just one that lets you do very different things you could never do acoustically. Electric and acoustic guitar are two very different things that reward somewhat different techniques and skills, but they're both legitimate uses of the same base instrument. Similarly, a lot of vocal percussion and super-low a cappella bass wouldn't function at all without amplification, the more complex arrangements that have become standard don't work unless everyone has a mic (whereas in the past a bigger group could use maybe three and let the block go unamplified and be fine), and we'd never consider this a manipulation of the voice even though technically it is.
Over time I've come to agree with this more and feel that I don't need to choose one side, just as I don't need to prefer one type of guitar over the other. I actually prefer the overt, stylistic effects VP uses to the more basic and expected tuning, reverb, lining up onsets and offsets, etc that most vocal recordings use because they're a creative rather than cosmetic choice, and they're out in the open. VP seems to have gotten more interested in going electric (so to speak) over the years. I think they do cool things with it that aren't always the obvious choice, and it seems to be a rewarding musical direction for them to experiment with.

This is why I love yours analysis : I always feel a little less stupide after it (I know noting about music) 😄 and it improved my appreciation of the song. So thank you Dan.

Oh, with one exception, I'd say. Richard Goodall, "Don't Stop Believing,," on AGT. This humble, sweet, simple 55 year old man got a standing ovation before he finished the second verse. Other than that, I fully agree, no one does covers as well as Voiceplay does them.💙

Got to take an acting Master Class with an Academy Award actor [ no names, not bragging, just telling a story } and when my turn came to act, I opened up my tool box and showed him every technique I'd acquired. I was all of eighteen at the time, sooo . . . . He watched me, nodded, and then said to me, " Nice. Now, take a break and then do it again, but this time don't let me see you acting." Did. Got a big smile and a "That's the way you do it, Sweetheart." Yeah. I think somebody once said that to VP and they took it to heart.

I think you're seeing a lot of Layne's style come through in this. Geoff has talked about Layne being influenced by EDM and electronic music that he has a background in and he incorporates that style into VoicePlay's arrangements quite often. I don't really mind it because I think they use it sparingly enough and in moments that make sense, but it's definitely not everyone's cup of tea. There's no right or wrong way to enjoy VoicePlay!

That sound Layne was making sent chills up my spine every time. It’s the same sound as the Predator monster made. I found a video online of the guy who made that sound (and many others) for the movie.
In a chat Layne explained how the sound was made and it’s easy to do. I can do it, but can’t make the pitch change.
