I Took a Cruise on a Ship Designed in The 1990s | NCL Sun

  • When cruise lines advertise their cruises they’ll always show you the newest and the biggest ships but the average lifespan on a cruise ship is close to 30 years and almost all major cruise lines have cruise ships that are well over 20 years old. That means that ships that were originally launched with promotional videos like this, are still sailing and I’ve just disembarked a cruise on one.
I usually cruise on new big cruise ships but when I saw a cheap price for a cruise on an older ship cruising with Norwegian Cruise Line, I knew I had to give it a go. I cruised on a very similar ship when I was a child and at the time I thought the ship was incredible so I hoped this would be a walk down memory lane for me.
I knew that the ship wouldn’t have things like go karts or virtual reality which you do get on modern cruise ships but I also suspected that the entertainment, food and service would also be different on a ship like this.
I hoped that it wouldn’t be worse but as the cruise I took was half the price of a cruise on one of the newest ships I figured there must be some reason for that. I hoped that it wasn’t because the ship was more rocky as I do get seasick, we did have some bad weather on this cruise and the sick bags did come out, but more about that later.
I was hoping to book another cruise after this on an even older cruise ship designed in the 1980s, but that all rested on how much I enjoyed this one.
It was pouring with rain in Lisbon when we embarked the ship which was ironically called the Norwegian Sun. Embarkation was really fast and that was probably helped by the fact that the ship holds a maximum of 1900 people, the current biggest cruise ship in the world holds 7000 guests so under 2000 is a relatively small ship.
Usually when I get on a ship the first thing I do is explore but as I was drenched through from the rain I found a some public toilets onboard to get changed in and I did my best to dry my hair under the handryer. It actually worked surprisingly well and although I got lots of comments here about getting bacteria on my head, I’d do it again, it was better than going to lunch looking like I’d been swimming in my clothes.
On cruises your suitcases are taken from you at the port and they arrive later in your cabin so I made sure that I took a change of clothes out of my suitcase and put it into my bag before I handed it over.
Once I was changed and I had wiped all of the rain out of my eyes I was able to see the atrium in the middle of the ship. This is one area that has remained largely unchanged since the ship was launched. Because of the way that cruise ships are made they can’t really make any big structural changes later on, cruise ships are built in chunks, usually upside down and then they are joined together. The whole process takes a couple of years and they have to plan everything, right down to where things like TV screens will be so that the structure can support the weight.
I’m happy to report that Norwegian have changed the carpet from the original brightly coloured one that they had here though. This new design is much more subtle and I think it looks much better. Back in the 2000s, or what we in the UK call the naughties bright colours were everywhere on cruise ships and it felt like it wasn’t uncommon to have red chairs, yellow carpets and green walls. I like to think that the colourful carpets and chairs are still living their life out somewhere.
This atrium area really is the heart of the ship and it stretches right the way from deck 3 up to the pool deck on deck 12. Most cruise ships will have an atrium in the middle which is kind of like this. Some are much bigger and some are smaller. Here there was the entrance one of the main dining rooms, the reception, a little starbucks, a bar and lots of desks of people trying to sell cruise next certificates and specialty meals. We would often get a drink here when we came back from port and it was a great place to people watch.

Emma, after spending 20 nights on Virgin Valiant Lady, 5 nights on Scarlet lady, and Christmas on Celebrity Apex, I have a question for you. Based on this review of a ship from the early 90's, who would rightfully spend $300-$500 a day, for a ship that is not even to the standards of this ship you just reviewed. This ship has 1900 passenger capacity, while the Virgin ships are 2700+. The main part of the Virgin ships, is a two story round staircase rotunda. That's it, yet your NCL ship had an 8 deck one!

I was an inaugural crew member on the Sun (production singer). We lived on the ship in the shipyard in Bremerhaven while she was still being built. Brian, that is very interesting. We were on the ship on a repo cruise when Free Style was just being tested. It wasn't great at first and after dinner the first night, I could not stand the sight of food. This went on for 3 days until I discovered their Cooking Light restaurant (which I understand is long gone.). After that I was able to eat everywhere! Do you remember that restaurant? Also way back when, the Norwegian Majesty had a voucher meal program in Bermuda for about 30 restaurants, $5 for lunch and $10 for dinner. We opted for dinner and we had a wonderful $100 meal in St. George where we docked for only $20. We went to Bermuda twice last year on Norwegian Pearl, each time taking their free shuttle boat from the Dockyard to St. George's.

@@susanmotschman4396 Yes, I remember they had just launched the Free Style concept when I worked there. It was a bit rough at the beginning. The wait staff was exhausted and adjusting to the ebb and flow of the dining crowds was difficult. But, overall, I heard a lot of positive opinions from guests about the flexibility. I will say, though, that we noticed an inconsistency in attendance at our shows; due to the fact that there were no set dining times. I think the restaurant you are referring to was/is called Pacific Heights. It’s a California fusion restaurant specializing in gourmet vegetarian dishes and lighter fare. I ate there a couple of times over my 8 months on board. I remember it being pretty good. I know a lot of guests really liked it. Some of my fellow performers ate there as often as they could!

@@longmowervideo I find all that interesting, Brian. I forgot the name of the restaurant, just remember the Cooking Light connection. Every time I went there, it was almost empty!....Now we like O'Sheehan't so much at all times of the day that we book our stateroom to be near O'Sheehan's. In November, we had breakfast there 7 mornings!....In May of this year, we "rediscovered" the Main Dining Room, having eaten there only once or twice per cruise in the three or four years before Covid. The cruise being less than 50% full, there was never a wait for the Main Dining room. And we asked for the same server each night in May and November, made our dinners so pleasant....Thanks for responding!

As a crew member I am so glad the regular drill is back. Most guests don’t realize how important it is to do it the old school way and not digitally. It’s not just about knowing where to go, it’s taking direction, knowing how to line up, what not to bring and what to bring, being quiet and listening. Sometimes during drill explaining to people how to line up and stand take a few tries with each family and that’s just a drill. Imagine that in an emergency when people are nervous about what’s happening, it’s chaotic. This way IF there is an emergency, you remember what you did a few days ago and it would be so much easier to have everyone under control and safe.
Plus, loads of people think the drill is only about the guests but no! We crew members need to practice with actual people how to crowd manage. It’s not the same as people trickling in to scan their assembly station with a phone. Lining up 120 people, keeping them engaged enough to listen and make it bearable, dealing with challenges with unhappy guests, children, disability accommodations, all of that is super important to our training.
In order to keep everyone safe we need that practice, even if it’s annoying. Guest are upset they need to stand there for 20/30 minutes.
Imagine having to lead a guest drill twice a week 😂 but I do it gladly cause I know it’s what’s safest and I’m now confident I’d know what to do and how. ❤❤

My first ever cruise many years ago was on this ship with my family of six to the Western Caribbean and so it has always been a special memory for me. I have cruised many times since then and find that I actually prefer a smaller cruise ship. The most memorable thing about this first cruise with the Norwegian Sun was the entertainment from the cruise director and his team. His name was Paul Baya and he had boundless talent and energy, and kept us well entertained over the seven days. Happy to see this ship still alive and well.

I've seen so many crisue videos on here, but I have to say your's are my fav. The others are very American, or Salezy, or just come across as a monotone broadcast about do's and don'ts of crusing. I find yours to be relatable (as I'm bitish too) and an excellent blend of voiceover and footage. Thanks for the uploads and I hope to see loads more.

My wife and I had a great experience on this ship. We took the Patagonia 14 day cruise from Val Pariso to Buenos Aires. We only had one day with rough weather (unusual for that trip) where the missus wasn't doing too well.
The service, food, entertainment was all great. The staff is what added the extra touch. I would be more than willing to cruise again on this same ship.

You make really good informative videos, and like another commentator says, I too have never considered a cruise.
But after watching a lot of your vids, I'm beginning to think it's something I'd like to do.
This ship would suit me fine, much prefer it to the newer mega ships. Especially your comments and explanations about having more outside areas. Even in the bad weather, I would always like to feel I was on a ship. But then I don't get seasick so that probably helps.

I worked on cruise ships between January 2000 and December 2006. Those ships will be classified as old now, a bit like me 😉. My experience then was that the smaller ships was much more fun for staff and passengers. It was great. Everyone got to know each other.
I did one contract on what was at that time the biggest ship, it was very hard work and by the end the contract most of the crew were strangers and still unfamiliar to you. The smaller ships the crew got to know each other and we were like family. If I have to cruise as a passenger now, I will avoid these new massive ships by all means. I shudder in horror just with the thought of going on one of them. Just personal preference, happy cruising to you all 🤪

Helloooooooo, I understand why you'd say that but after 6 years on TH-cam I know that isn't a good idea for my channel. When I put a ship name in the title that limits the viewers to people who care about that ship (which is maybe 1% of less of the audience that'll watch it without). It's in the description and TH-cam has the right tags etc so it'll come up if people search. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼

I absolutely loved my cruise on board the Sun. I cruised on her in 2015 on a 10 day cruise up the inside passage to Alaska. The full promenade and deck space was wonderful in Alaska, particularly the day we sailed into Glacier Bay. I also took advantage of a good price on an aft balcony which was huge. That is a great ship!❤

I continue to watch your videos even though it is unlikely that I will do many cruises. I enjoy your presentation style and I learn much about something of which I know little. What I find missing from your videos is more information about what you see while sailing and what you might see in port. The idea of cruising and just enjoying the ambience in a bar is something I can achieve in my favourite pub after a good hike. If I were ever to go on a cruise, it would be what the cruise would offer me other than the meals and on-board entertainment. The only cruise that I've ever done was Vancouver to Alaska and I did that, at the urging of my nephew for his mother's 65 birthday gift, planning on seeing many pelagic and shoreline birds and marine mammals as we traveled the inner sound of British Columbia. To my dismay, the ship actually travelled far off shore, not far enough for most pelagic species but not close enough for shoreline species. So I spend days on deck and saw very few birds and mammals. Whenever a whale was sighted, everyone rushed to the deck to see it but as we were offshore, we didn't see the smaller whales or porpoises of the inland water. It wasn't until we even got to Alaska that I found out there was a naturalist aboard the ship. The actual landings of that cruise were pleasant but not especially rewarding nor very historic. I understand that is very specific to me but surely there are people who take cruises for what they offer on land or while on the ocean and not just for what they provide aboard ship. I know there are adventure cruises and my old boss is staff on cruises to the Arctic, Antarctic and the Galapagos Islands. But I would have thought people still travel regular cruise lines for these things. BTW Rubber for eraser is used in Newfoundland as well. Rubbers is also used for rubber boots too although I have heard some Newfoundlanders say "Wellingtons" as well.

I used to work on this ship as a stage tech in the early 2000s. It was nice to see the ship again, and I am glad you had a good time. It is interesting how some things have changed while others have stayed the same. It is actually nice to see that muster drills are still a thing. I was a Muster Station Leader, so I was out front showing people how to put on life jackets, doing the safety talk and trying to keep everyone happy. It wasn't easy, but I did try to make it fun.
It is interesting that back when I was with NCL, the Norwegian Sun was one of the larger ships. I worked on quite a few NCL ships and I have to say that I really liked the atmosphere aboard smaller ships (I have fond memories of the Norwegian Sea and Norwegian Majesty). They may not have had the latest tech or all the bells and whistles of the larger ships, but the crew was really close knit.
