Today 03/19/2022 I rode the tail of the dragon like never done before. I placed myself in your position and I was able to feel every bit of the road, gear changes, etc just as I felt sitting on it and feeling every bit of the ride. I have a 1985 Goldwing and I have about 300 hours in 5 years of slow speed training so I felt at ease with your bike, except for the beautiful sound it had, while the Goldwing is silent. But that was a beautiful ride, you had the same speeds I would have in my own bike, and not once did I feel apprehensive. It was a peaceful, beautiful ride and I have bookmarked the video for “future rides.” Thanks for such a beautiful video.

Very nice ride. Feels like I was riding right along with you. ;). I compliment you on the way you approached the road. Safety and awareness are always priority. Many people don’t respect the Dragon and take it too fast.

Very Well done, HDR! Ride your own ride. We do the Dragon once or twice a year mostly when we are in the area going to other rides, as this is not far from our home in Middle Tenn. I would love to show you some of the other roads in the area that don't have such a reputation for danger. Of course you took the danger out of the ride, just remember to get into that lower gear on the switchbacks and start power as you enter the turn not wait until you are in the middle. Just give me a shout next time I will ride with you.

I'm planning my first trip up to the BRP later this summer. I've never had a great desire to do the Tail of the Dragon, but lately I've thought, "Heck, you can't go all the way up there and NOT do it!" One of my worries though is that I'll be too slow compared to everyone else riding it. After watching your video, I'm not as concerned. And it looks like there are enough opportunities to pull off to the side and allow faster traffic to pass. I certainly don't want to get rear-ended by a zoomer on a crotch rocket! I also noted that you went on a Tuesday. I've heard it's not as crowded during the week, as it is on weekends. Peace and love.

    • @HarleyDayRider
      @HarleyDayRider  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks for watching. Yes, there are a lot of places to pull off the road and let faster people or cars go around you. You are correct, we knew we wanted to do the run on a weekday there was less traffic. We had a great time and Mrs. HDR talked about how great the road and views were. Most of the time that road is crowded on weekends and that close to a holiday. You got lucky with as little traffic as you seen.
Keep straight and you come up in Maryville Tennessee and if you take a right about a mile past mile marker 11 you come out back in Pigeon Forge Tennessee.
I use to ride that road every weekend.
Now my wife and I only ride it once a year.

It's not too bad if you go the speed limit, honestly what is really distracting are the photographers; when I went, there was one that basically distracted you enough with their tent that you almost missed your turn in for a curve. I generally pulled over when someone faster came up behind. The unfortunate reality is not many can actually ride and yet they intend to tackle this road, when by all accounts its not too bad. Tbh HDR could have gone a little faster but precious cargo and the line hugging.... outside/inside and not adequately shifting the bike (ride the power band) - lots of lugging. I intend to go back next year...

Glad you made it. It is such an over hyped road. It's just a twisty road .It's fun if no one else is on it. Otherwise it's annoying. If that was a no name twisty road you encountered I bet you would have ridden it a little better. But if anyone watching thinks that was the safest way to ride a new road , they need training. ( Motorman's Ride Like A Pro On The Dragon , shows good technique for normal riding , and includes a video of Yellow Wolf on his Goldwing , good video ,good tips )
Please don't take this as demeaning or insulting not meant to be. Safety is the goal. I've never ridden it solo always 2 up on Road Kings. I rode a few miles at a slower pace showing the wife how it should feel at the lower speeds. Here's my observations.
You lined up nearly every curve from the inside of the curve. (Inside, inside, outside) Lengthens the curve and lessens your vision. You can't see around the curve until well into it. You are to the inside so early you can't see. Even going slow , your technique should still be good. Bikes turn by leaning and you almost steered. Almost vertical.
Outside, inside, outside. Is proper. Allows you to see further through the turn. Straightens out the curve somewhat. That is the safest path.
Exiting a turn with the engine lugging means you should have downshifted before the turn ,or maintained a better speed through the turn. Hoping it has enough umph is dangerous. Also harder on the motor .
I applaud you pulling off to allow folks to pass .
    Ride safe

@@HarleyDayRider There's no trophies on the road. All about safety. I think you and Mrs HDR would feel more at ease with proper technique. The bike would feel more stable and fluid. Enter and exit in 2nd gear shift to third in the straights . Even at a slow pace it just feels smoother ,more controlled. I took my wife on some roads with very similar turns ,just not as many did it at a different speeds so she could feel confident in the bikes and my ability. Then did it slow and upright and she noticed it felt odd. I'm still learning too. I'm trying to improve and learn more all the time. Keith Code "A Twist of the Wrist", Ken Condon Riding in the Zone.

If you're in the area try The Rattler just north of there.....a much better road imo or The Devils Whip

@@HarleyDayRider I get it... I just know that sometimes going too slow on roads like that, can cause almost as many issues as going too fast... So many off camber blind turns, people usually aren't expecting someone to be running under the speed limit... Causes them to slam on the brakes, or try to go around you, etc...

Holy shit man. Why are you going so slow? Any slower than that you will tip the bike over

Mrs. HDR was very scared and we still had another 12 days to be out on the road. She also made the mistake of watching all of the crash videos on that road. So I told her I would take her slow and see could look around. Ride Safe

Whats the point of even riding all those curves if you are going 15mph?
