Lengthy comment with lots of thinking ahead :
I feel like people are so afraid to be themselves and "not original". Sometimes being yourself means not being super original. This is actually not so cynical and not bad at all : many anime artists have art that look the same really, but I don't find it bad at all and enjoy their individual art because they're themselves. It's easy to sense (for me at least) when an artist is copying another artist not because they're inspired by the art but because they're like "I like it and I think they're very original also they're popular, so I'll copy their style so people will finally look at my art" (nobody thinks that out loud actually I'm pretty sure it's always subconscious) and it feels very disingenuous because you are not yourself while you are drawing. I did this for a long time, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. I love insects with all my might and it was all I drew for a while, but I was bullied at school for that and started drawing whatever I saw that was the most boring white bread "nobody gets upset" stuff, and when people liked this boring art I still felt terrible because I knew this art wasn't me so they were appreciating a facet I've invented and not the real me. But if this art that I find boring is someone else's genuine self? Great! I'll love it, because it's themselves.
Overall, I know it's very difficult to like yourself and your art when you've had bad people in your life, and also the internet with social media and the hunt for tons of followers doesn't help. I've actually been out of social media except youtube for a year now and it helped me a ton...
This was long I know lol but I hope somebody who's struggling with disliking their art reads this and gets something from my experience!!

      -first-
Others do feel the way I do
      -second-
I know where my guilt comes from when I'm not being true to what really inspires me.
      -third-
I'm going to continue drawing what I like and not worry so much about popularity.

One of my friends have been feeling very anxious with their art style, and most of the time, get overwhelmed whenever they see my art (I've been drawing a lot younger than they were, so I got a lot more practice then them) so I'm definitely gonna send them this video!! They're getting a lot more positive with their art style, and it looks very unique and I personally really like their style. Hopefully thanks to this video, they feel a lot more confident!!

I had an "art breakthrough" recently where I was upset with how my art looked but I couldn't place why, figured out that the brush I was using for my lineart made my cartoony style look really amateur-ish/like an ms paint nightmare. Switching from a completely smooth brush only in black for lineart to a textured brush in shades of red completely changed how my art looks and I love it so much more now. I think lineart is so important and people should consider it a lot more. For some people super smooth and clean inks makes their art look super professional, but for my style it makes it look low-effort and boring. Lineart man.

  • @Redboots

can confirm that being dissatisfied with art skill is easily mistaken for dissatisfaction with your art style because I went through a phase like two months ago where I Hated my art style and then I realised it was because my art was stiff as hell and I was drawing heads too big. as one does.

  • @Eldr1tchGl1tch

I remember a time where I wasn't happy with my art, I looked at it a few days later and I hated it.
I've reached a point that even though I see flaws and places I can improve, my art style and skills are solid enough that I can put my art as my laptop background and like it even months down the line.
And it's not just my world view changing cause I still cringe at a lot of my older art.

When I started watching Oliver is really when I started discovering my art style. And I think I took a fair amount of inspiration from it-?
I’ve also noticed that when I do traditional/marker art I tend to go with much cleaner or chunkier lineart and avoid blending my shading whereas in digital art I’ll blend almost everything out and my lineart is less of a focus.
I know this is quite a pointless comment but I just wanted to put it out there- TvT

It's always fun going back to some of my old favourite art media (animation, manga etc) and recognising something that's in my art style that I must have gotten from that media and then incorporated so completely I'd forgotten about it. Like often by that stage it's evolved into something more my own but you can see the seeds again.
Also whenever I get lost constructing a drawing I always return to triangles and straight angular lines and then will add back in round edges where I think they're needed so it's always interesting watching people who build anatomy from round shapes, my brain doesn't work that way.

  • @boysnberriespie

I love how your advice is very open to an artists personal needs and wants, but also specific enough that it’s useable advice. Art style is definitely a subjective thing but it really helps newer artists to hear real ways they can change and improve!

  • @hellomynameisphia2082

I feel like when it comes to art one shouldn't be too worried about finding an art style an just try to learn the basics, an example being depth and the way light affects objects. personally I tend to have a more black and white manga style, their are some things about it that make it more "my style" like how I shade eyes a hair, but I put myself wearing a mask as my profile cause its a metaphor for how I feel more comfortable not showing my face. Anyways my tip for beginners learn the basics of art it can help you improve much faster then just constantly trying to get more followers on social platforms by only trying to find a style that oh so original. Being happy with your improvement is better then being upset that your not improving even though you have an art style.

I've definitely been struggling with my style in the past couple years. I feel like it's too generic sometimes and too complex/time consuming for what I want to do. Which is actually why I started getting involved on YT, and found you and a couple other lovely artists! I love watching you work with traditional media because that's what I'm better at than digital, and sometimes it's hard for me to follow digital art.
Keep doing what you're doing! You're young and skilled and you're inspiring to me, and I'm in my 30's.

  • @FandomTOBY

with the point oliver talks about around the 5 minute mark; EXACTLY!!!
For me I really REALLY like your art Oliver! But I don't take much if any influence from it. All I can say is I basically "stole" the way Tamaytka used to draw her characters noses and eventually changed it enough to be "unique" to my own style
At the beginning of my art journey I used to draw mouths a lot like the artist from the digital band Gorillaz draws mouths (because I grew up with that band lol)
But now I developed my own way of drawing them and I have no idea what I'm doing :D
you could see art styles as puzzle pieces from different art styles
and when they are all put together they form a unique art style that is yours and yours alone. It might be similar to someone elses but it's only similar. Because I bet you a stone and 1 cent that the person your art style is similar to will never be able to create YOUR way of drawing and getting to a finished art piece!!

I haven't ever hated my style I don't think... I've changed things I wasn't satisfied with sure but I don't think I've ever hated it...
I think my main problem comes from not liking the execution in an area, and it differs from one piece to another that leads to me 'hating' how something looks.
I don't remember where I was going with this 😅
Art is hard and harder to keep consistent quality and stuff from drawing to drawing

  • @meatonthebone7203
    @meatonthebone7203 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I’d like to add that art style isn’t always conscious. Beginners tend to focus more on style, while more experienced artists just draw without fussing over it, so their style is also shaped by the shortcuts they take and the things they enjoy spending time on.
Just my tip for beginners, don’t worry so much about style. Let your art be influenced by your favorite artists, but if you spend a lot of your time worrying about perfecting your style, you won’t be improving your technical skills. Without those skills, your art won’t be able to capture the image you had in your head and it will only frustrate you more.
Remember that style eventually develops naturally and it’s important to focus your efforts into learning things like anatomy that will greatly improve your art, regardless of your style.

you’ve been a big part in my style and growth as an artist for so so long now. dont worry about schedule or your « inconsistent lighting » as long as you’re doing well and we still get to see your amazing art and videos or even that we got to see them in the first place. seeing you grow has been really inspiring and im so glad you popped up on my feed those few years ago. youre awesome, happy arting art guy >:)
