      Many thanks to you for a great tribute! Appreciate it...a million views would be useful, but the audience I think for this subject is fairly limited in Thailand, so far anyway. There's a lot of rubbish getting a lot of views out there, it's a bizarre phenomenom, this TH-cam algorthythm thing.

    Wasting time around random sois was my favourite thing to do in bangers when I was there. While I never ventured quite as deep as you did, mate, it was certainly an interesting part of my day. I'd rather fortnightly uploads with lots of interesting stuff over random silent walking through shopping malls twice a week any day of the year. Never change what you do, Pat.

    • @BangkokPat
      @BangkokPat  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thanks Rick, I have a duty to roam where others don't go, and it's a habit I've got into. Where else would I go? To Starbucks to tell you all how much a latte costs in USD? Let the vloggers vlog all that...I'd rather risk dirty shoes and attack by a pack of cats. Never had any bad looks down sois, people are as friendly to you are as you are to them. I get a few interesting stories in those sois, the ghost stories are often ridiculous, but I do ask about ghosts so what can I expect....

      What is the deal with silent walking in malls lately or guys who make videos of their feet while the camera swings wildly with loud crap music? The truth is they do seem to attract many viewers and subscribers. I have thought of trying that myself but am too embarrassed to put it on TH-cam.

    • @BangkokPat
      @BangkokPat  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@destinationsunknowntheroadsles The silent slow videos with no commentary shouldn't be called vloggers as anyone can do that. Apparently the silent ones show the culture more, so the many comments state anyway. The other end of the scale is the ego walk and talk with a selfie stick videos, telling you what you should do.. I can't do either. My videos don't interest many but that's how YT works.

    Absolutely love your work.
    So many Thai videos about not touching peoples' heads (is that a US, UK thing?)
    Love to see the gritty urban landscape, and Bangkok in 1960s and 70s.
    I recently went into a cemetery on the river near Asiatique - Bangkok Protestant Cemetery. What is interesting is the number of English and other Europeans who were in service of the previous Kings and Protestant apparently included people of the Jewish community. Lots stories could be found in relation to various cemeteries in Bangkok - Protestant, Catholic, Islamic, Chinese, Hindu etc.
    Various embassies and European Churches have long histories in Bangkok. There is various historical European clubs eg the British club.
    There is so much to see in Bangkok that tourist vloggers miss, eg the history of the Malaysia hotel etc.
    Again thanks for providing an alternative to mango and sticky rice.

    • @BangkokPat
      @BangkokPat  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much, glad you enjoy the old urban landscape, now pretty much ignored in its raw glory. Some of the histories of the foreign embassies/clubs/associations are scandalous!
      I don't really follow any vloggers, tend to get a bit boring to be honest, a couple stand out but as you say, they miss the finer details.
      I would have loved to be in Bangkok in the 60s & 70s, my dad was and didn't document much of anything on film, plenty of stories he told us as kids! And a few stories he waited until we were adults to tell us as well...

      While millions suffer due to the lack of any good vaccines. The Thai government has been so focused on their corrupt quarantine for BIG $$$ and the Phuket scam for only the most desperate of foreigners they seem to have ignored the general population. This has been intentional since day one and slowly the truth is coming out. Many expats caught outside of Thailand are held for ransom to return to their homes and families. Sorry quarantine does not take rocket science or huge amounts of money to make it work. It takes focus and compassion. Not greed and corruption.

I'd heard about the train graveyard, I seem to recall someone mentioning it's been walled off however. I hope the next time I'm in Bangkok it's before the area's changed too much. They had the same idea about making a City Airport Terminal here at KL Sentral - it's there, alright, you CAN check your bags in, and a lot of people use the airport express train (though prices went up drastically a few years back), but I don't think that many people check in at KL Sentral.

    Another good piece Pat. I passed by that area a few times but never gone deep.
    There is another thing Pat which out of this video subject but related to your channel. Recently I just rewatch another youtuber which I had unsubscribe to his channel. It happened that one of his video appeared in the HOME page in this TH-cam apps, and the place he travelled is one of a place I want to go, so I watched it . And again, I just don’t like his style though the place he shot and recorded was attractive. Then I checked on his subscriber count, wow! It is double, and no, it multiplied by ten times after just few months time. What a joke !
    Then I checked back on yours, which is a serious narrator (at least sounded alike serious, enthusiastic), in putting lots of effort searching for informations, historical data, and so on, bit to mention putting bulky of time to edit and compile all the recorded videos jus to make a fine final cut, the count upset me. With a person simply simply make a video, it hits up; but for another person like you, what d upside down!
    This is a upsidedown world !

    My hunch is likely another mall. Thailand has a knack at destroying what is quaint, beautiful, and or interesting and what remains of its quickly deteriorating culture. It seems there are never enough malls, 7-11, hotels, guest houses, girly bars, motorbike rentals, tacky shirt shops, etc. Having said that the country of Laos has done a great job in record time and is now in debt to the Chinese forever.
    Once again a very interesting and enjoyable show. I look forward to every Sunday. One of the best channels out of Thailand. (Mai Poot Len)

    • @BangkokPat
      @BangkokPat  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much indeed. I don't blame your hunch at all, I can imagine them announcing a mega project and teasing with hints before the actual announcement, then it'll be a mega mega mall that fills the entire area, boasting the usual crap stores and outlets, but all super sized. It wouldn't be a shock, but the park idea is the obvious wish for most sane folks.
      Shame about Laos, but China likely put pressure on them.

    Glad I caught this Vlog. I recently walked through many of the areas you showed on this episode. It reminds me of the time somewhere in the mid 2000's when I went inside the grounds and inspected and photographed a bunch of ancient trains rotting away around the maintenance buildings. There was no security, nobody around at all, and I spent a good hour in there snooping around until someone saw me and strongly indicated I should leave immediately. You are exposing all my favorite secret places in Bangkok. Keep up the good work!

It was odd having the great piece of wasteland in the middle, all waiting for development. Surprised the SRT hadn't got rid of it years ago but as I say, they gotta be tactful, they were given it by Rama 5. I reckon if they were gonna do a totally commercial development with no park, they would have done that long ago so it might be a good sign!!
