DIY Garden Room Build with No Experience! Part 4 - Vertical Cedar Cladding 🤔

  • I decided that my garden needs a garden room for use as a summerhouse, man-cave, maybe a games room. After a lot of research, I decided the pre-fabricated summerhouses just weren't going to cut it, and I didn't want to spend the serious money to have a company build one for me. Instead, I watched a few videos on TH-cam, scoured the internet for ideas, then broke out the tools. My aim is to have it ready for BBQ season 2020!
    In this video: Fitting the vertical cedar cladding.

    Absolutely awesome job. Great to see you venting the cold roof with a simple system. I have installed something very similar. So many incorrect roof installs on TH-cam that won’t last five years because of poor ventilation.

    Thanks for sharing. Finding it very useful as I progress through my own build. I’m trying to find the video where you talked about the metal roofing sheets for the unseen walls. Can’t seem to locate it. Wondering how you do the corner trim where the metal side meets the cedar?!
    Cheers!

    • @AlsDIYFollies
      @AlsDIYFollies  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, glad to be of help!
      For the corners, I had the cedar extend past the corner ever so slightly, so it is proud of the metal sheet and capped it with a right-angle profile corner trim. It doesn’t look super neat from the back side, but as it’ll only be seen from the cedar side, you can’t tell. I just made sure it was a flat (rather than corrugated) part of the metal sheet on the corner so it could be sealed up well. Hope that makes sense?

      I think my reply got lost in the ether...For the metal cladding, I used these...www.cladco.co.uk/22mm-stitcher-screws-with-a-w-bonded-washer , but I think I should have used these www.cladco.co.uk/65mm-screws-to-wood-with-baz-washer-pack-of-100 or similar. The ones I used were pretty secure into the OSB though, and 65mm does seem a little long maybe(?). And I got the plastic caps to cover the heads, so they should be pretty weatherproof all in all.

    • @lievgarcia
      @lievgarcia 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlsDIYFollies Did you fit battens as well? Maybe that's where the extra depth of the 65mm would be useful. I'm not suggesting you take them down :)
      Thanks a lot for the info!

    • @AlsDIYFollies
      @AlsDIYFollies  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't use battens for the metal stuff in the end, I figured it was sturdy enough direct onto the boarding, and the corrugation would allow enough ventilation behind. Probably a little lazy on my part!

    You will have to keep an eye on your cladding as you’ve terminated them too close to the ground….timber suppliers recommend 150mm for optimum longevity

    • @AlsDIYFollies

      Thanks! I’d definitely recommend cedar, I went with the Canadian, as it’s supposed to be more durable. I think it was more expensive though.

  • @viktorakawisevik1305

    Great video. Will you always use battens before cladding or is it optional? What purpose does it serve?

    • @AlsDIYFollies
      @AlsDIYFollies  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! I would always use battens personally. They serve to allow airflow behind the cladding to prevent moisture getting trapped and rot setting in. I’ve used double battens for this, as I think that is what is recommended for vertical cladding (as opposed to singles for horizontal), although you could probably get away with only single battens maybe.

  • @ishanperusinghe

    Did you not need the cedar to weather 12 weeks before applying oil to let resin wash out . How does it looks now ?

    • @AlsDIYFollies
      @AlsDIYFollies  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn’t, I’d not heard of that. They sat and acclimatised for a few weeks while I was doing other things. They’ve held up pretty well, maybe one or two of the lighter coloured boards have started to show very faint signs of weathering, but the rest still look as good as new.

    Have you insulated the inside and if so did you put another vapour barrier over it? Only asked as am currently doing one and there's mixed reviews on it. I've insulated mine and am going to plaster board it but not sure about the other barrier as I think it will course moisture if I put another barrier in

    • @AlsDIYFollies
      @AlsDIYFollies  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m going to insulate it once I’ve got the windows and doors in over the coming month or so. I’m thinking 50-80mm of insulation in the walls should do it, and plasterboard on the interior. I’m not 100% decided on a vapour barrier yet as there seems to be conflicting advice. I’ll have a couple of small vents under the floor, and the roof is ventilated above the level of the insulation to prevent moisture gathering on the underside, so I’m not sure I’ll need a barrier. It seems like trapping moisture into an otherwise semi-breathable structure is a bad idea? I’ll be interested to hear what you decide on, sounds like you are a step ahead of me.

      Thanks! So far I reckon I’ve spent around £2500- £3000, and should have it finished around £6500 -£7000, but a big chunk of the outstanding cost is going to be the bifold doors for the front. The biggest single cost so far has been the cladding at around £900.

      Thank you for your reply I’m planning to build a art studio, I have to get the power tools and materials so it’s a bit of overwhelming at the moment.

    • @AlsDIYFollies
      @AlsDIYFollies  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Looking back, probably the only power tools that have proved essential for me are a circular saw, and a drill/driver. It would be a lot easier with a fully equipped workshop, but you can just chip away at each stage one at a time, and get tools as you go along. If I could change one thing about my build, it would be to have spent more time on the design and on planning ahead. Good luck with your build!

    I have a question, is vertical tongue and groove still waterproof? Same as horizontal?
    Thanks a lot!

    • @AlsDIYFollies
      @AlsDIYFollies  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks!
      Yes it should be, the tongue & groove is quite tight fitting. I suppose the cladding is not 100% waterproof by itself, but with the Tyvek wrap on the wall boards and the air gap to allow ventilation between, the whole system is. The cladding just lets rain run off vertically, so even if a bit gets through a little crack, it shouldn’t soak into the cedar and will just run off the back side without reaching the structural part of the wall.

  • @paulperrin2152
    @paulperrin2152 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you double lat the shed walls to allow airflow??

    • @AlsDIYFollies
      @AlsDIYFollies  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Between the walls and the cladding, yes. I’ve seen quite a few builds where they only single batten it, but the advice seemed generally to be to double it for vertical cladding.
