  • The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is more well known for its sidequests than its dungeons, but that doesn't stop them from being some of the most interesting in franchise history. Each dungeon brings something special to Majora's mask, and although they are small in number, they are big in personality. In this video, I will look at each dungeon to see which is worst and which is best, but please let me know what you think!
    What is the best dungeon in Majora's Mask? Do you agree with my order or feel I didn't give your favorite dungeon enough respect? Let me know in the comments below!

    Snowhead seems to be based on what's called a Cryovolcano. These bizarre reversals of the standard volcano erupt volatiles like water or methane into the air at or below their freezing point, such that it condenses to a solid when it returns to the surface as snow. The only problem? Cryovolcanoes don't tend to happen on earth, and are naturally filled with water instead of magma. I assume someone at Nintendo heard about it, thought the juxtaposition was interesting, and designed a snow/fire temple combo to match

      @@MrDrBoi keep in mind, I'm just speculating based on the design and the way the temple seems to impact it's environment. Someone who worked on the game would know more about the theming, but it is an interesting parallel

      It's not the only dungeon this way. The Ice Ruins from ALBW are also revealed to be an Ice dungeon on top of a sleeping volcano, Lorule's Death Mountain being frozen. (though it's more aesthetic than anything).

    • @Henskelion
      @Henskelion ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it's more likely that, given the game only has 4 dungeons, they just combined the trope of a fiery volcanic mountain, and an icy snow-covered mountain into one area, rather than separate those two environmental tropes out into 2 distinct areas.

    • @CoolPorygon
      @CoolPorygon ปีที่แล้ว

      Wouldn't it be safer to say that it's just a mountain? Mountains in the cold aren't fantastic elements, and Snowhead doesn't erupt, it's a Goron breathing.

    I've always considered MM to basically have 9 dungeons. The challenge to even enter each dungeon is often similar to the dungeon itself. Especially in the case of ikana.
    Also note that you're always unlocking new 'dungeon' items before entering the dungeon proper. A bottle (and deku mask) before woodfall, Lens of truth and Goron mask for snowhead, hookshot and zora mask for great bay, and multiple masks as well as mirror shield for ikana.
    This really makes each zone feel like a dungeon itself before you ever enter the 'dungeon'.

    • @MrDrBoi
      @MrDrBoi  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Assuming you are referring to The Moon, Deku Palace, Pirate's Fortress, Ikana Castle, and the four dungeons, what's your 9th one?

    • @daret9056
      @daret9056 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@MrDrBoi I'm referring to each 'zone' as one, each 'dungeon' as one. as well as the moon.
      Swamp, mountains, ocean, canyon. Each has several challenges to complete and items to obtain before you can enter their dungeons. This makes the zones feel like dungeons themselves, especially the canyon since it ends with a boss battle.

      A few weeks ago I was at my parents kitchen watching a video by Save Data in which Stone tower temple music is analyzed. An hour later I walked into my dad who was in the living room watching tv and he asked me if I was listening to Zelda music. This guy was minding his own business, subconsciously heard the different dissected parts of the song through the sound of the tv, across another room, and he remembered it was from a game I haven't played in fifteen years. I am quite sure that he cannot have seen me playing through that dungeon more than twice a bunch of years ago. And he is not the kind of guy who would be looking through the internet for "that crazy song from the videogame my kids use to play". And yet he remembered it. It totally blew my brain.

    Really like your lists, and have been replaying MM on NSO for the 100th time, and would say I would rank the levels the same way. Getting to Woodfall always just felt like an extension to the prologue, so the trip to get there drags on, and then of course the level itself is pretty easy. Snowhead gives you a little more excitement on the journey to it, and then the level itself has different paths and some "extra" places for the stray fairies to be. Great Bay and Stone Tower both have longer journeys with (just as good) mini dungeons both required to get to the actual dungeon itself.

    Very good ranking. I mostly agree with the analysis and placement. Mine would be similar, except I would probably place Great Bay above Stone Tower. I both adore and despise the Stone Tower Temple at the same time. With many of the most powerful enemies in the game, wind water and fire-themed sections, and light bending puzzles using the Mirror Shield, the Stone Tower Temple challenges the player in nearly every way possible. I absolutely hate how tedious it is to repeatedly play the Elegy of Emptiness, though. It doesn't hurt my enjoyment of the dungeon too much, but it is one of the very few things in any Zelda game that tangibly annoys me. As for Great Bay, I love absolutely everything about it, from its unique style and aesthetic to its engaging gameplay. I greatly enjoy navigating the twisting and punishing water currents that propel you through the temple's depths, and jumping across all of the machinery and moving parts in the temple. The central valve room that controls the direction of the current and the ways in which many machines move is one of the most clever and fun mechanics in any Zelda game, in my opinion. One theme that always stands out to me is the way that the dungeon makes you use both fire and ice arrows together in many creative ways. I'm one of those weirdos who loves water dungeons the most, and Great Bay is definitely my favorite of the bunch.

    I honestly didn’t expect Woodfall Temple to be the lowest ranking dungeon considering the popular opinion of Great Bay. But I was more surprised to find myself agreeing with most points:
    1. It’s the shortest dungeon
    2. The Deku Mask is overused
    3. Odolwa is the easiest boss
    These are great points worth their own discussions in terms of difficulty and gameplay design. If fans can understand the complexity of game designs, community discourse would be far more educational!

And even if you don't know which of the two ways you have to pick from, you'll quickly find out that you can't progress with the wrong one. Aside from the waterfall that turns the waterwheel, none of the waterfall things need to change state more than once. The seasaws can all be done with one fire arrow each and you get everything in that room as a result. you only need to refreeze them if you jump off.

It almost feels like the developers tried to compensate for how slow and tedious OOT's Water Temple was by making a dungeon where you can quickly zip around in the Zora form, versus slowly trudging around in the Iron Boots. Also while I like the Stone Tower better overall, something about the Great Bay Temple's aesthetic is really cool to me, like it's some kind of technologically-advanced industrial pumping station in a game that's otherwise full of more fantasy-like ancient temples made of stone and wood.

    • @MrDrBoi
      @MrDrBoi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good point, the Zora form is almost like an answer for all of the iron boot complaints.

    • @Henskelion
      @Henskelion ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrDrBoi In general it was cool how the transformation masks combined a lot of the abilities you already had in OOT, but made them easier to use by just binding them to certain inputs. Like how in Zora form you can fast-swim, but pressing B underwater gives you the same effect that the Iron Boots from OOT had by letting you walk underwater, and on land, B would let you fire what was basically the OOT Boomerang.

      I feel like people complain about this dungeon a lot merely because it's the successor of the "notorious" OoT Water Temple. Meanwhile the Lakebed Temple which is imo a slightly less interesting and more tedious (but still good) iteration of the same concept gets praised.
      It's nice to see people appreciate the Great Bay Temple (and it's music/aesthetic) for a change!

    I would put woodfall above snowhead, and then keep great bay and stone tower respectively above it in my ranking. Something about the atmosphere of woodfall and it being a solid first dungeon without handholding is.... quite refreshing. I like dragonroost cavern and Tail Cave as first dungeons more, but this one always has a special place in my heart. Not sure why. Probably because it is more atune to nature than any other dungeon in the game.

    My personal list would be:
    #4 Great Bay: I really don't like the design and concept, even though the Zora transformation itself is really cool. The temple isn't confusing anymore as a grown-up, but I still don't really like the whole going up and down in circles, idk. I think this one is worse than the OoT water temple people usually hate even more.
    #3 Snowhead: Another case where the temple is not nearly as cool as the transformation for it. Similar to the great bay temple it ends up just being a lot of running up and down
    #2 Woodfall: Might be some nostalgia cause it's the first one, but I just really dig the vibe of this one. There wasn't a lot going on yet in terms of items and masks we have at that early stage, but despite that the atmosphere and design of this dungeon is very much up my alley. Ironically the deku is my least favourite transformation / form haha
    #1 Stone temple: I think barely anyone can argue that this dungeon is the GOAT. It messed me up good as a kid. I remember after many fails I eventually asked a friend for help haha. In terms of vibe and how much I like the design / style of the temple itself, this one may be below the Woodfall temple for me personally, but it has SO much to offer in terms of puzzles etc! It even comes with a mini temple that you have to do to gain access. The mini temple might actually be number 1 on my list, if I counted it! Plus Ikana Valley is undoubtedly my favourite region! In more sense than one this whole region and it's temple(s) are just a perfect culmination of everything majora's mask stands for and why I absolutely love it!

    Personally, I never understood the hate for the water Temple. The first time as a child, took me close to 2 slow ingame days but I was quick to realize that a lot of that was my own fault. It's very linear and there even is a pipe to guide you the entire way. And overall, it's just go into two rooms, swap water direction, go into another 2 rooms. With only one extra side room.

    • @MrDrBoi
      @MrDrBoi  ปีที่แล้ว

      I imagine for a lot of people it got confusing once they got sucked into a current they didn't mean to swim into, because they couldn't remember where they had already been. That said, I agree that once you realize that the pipes are your guide, it is fairly straightforward.

Other than Goht, the temple feels needlessly tedious. Especially when accounting for the fairies. I feel like where Woodfall is lacking in difficulty, it makes up for in theme and ambiance. The rest are incredible. Majora's Mask will always be my favorite Zelda game.

    There's only one thing I have to disagree with, that thing being what you said about snowhead temples music.
    You described it as bland and unremarkable. Meanwhile I'd say it's incredible.
    Out of the 4 dungeon themes, I'd rank it #3 but they are all so good that this doesn't really matter.
    The dissonant piano and chimes, the fast pizzicato strings and the space between elements combined with the growling ambient makes this theme super anxiety inducing for me.
    The occasional reverb brings across how big this place is. On the other hand, you have many instruments without any reverb at all, giving this music an alien like sound through it's contradicting elements. The melody itself is nothing I'd listen to outside of playing this dungeon but it fits the atmosphere perfectly if you ask me.
    I prefer the stone tower - and great bay temples themes over this, but it doesn't fall far behind.

    • @MrDrBoi

    For me, enjoyment wise I think I rate the dungeons 3-2-1-4.
    Great Bay Temple becomes tedious due to all the back- and forward tracking and has like the most meh boss in the game; Even Odolwa is a better boss than Gyorg. Still a delightful puzzle though. 3/5
    Snowhead is also a bit frustrating and tedious, and I think has even a worse dungeon than 3; but the boss fight is so epic, it is impossible to put it last. 3.5/5
    Woodfall Temple has an OK boss and has no real weaknesses - but no real strengths, either. Still, atmosphere is really charming and brings up the whole. 4/5
    Stone Tower is just an awesome dungeon bringing everything neatly together. 5/5.

    I am going to be 100% honest. I really like Majora's Mask as a whole, but I honestly always have trouble remembering the dungeons (outside of the Stone Temple mainly because of its core gimmick and the climb up to it) despite having beaten the game multiple times across multiple versions. I can remember just about everything about every other 3D Zelda's dungeon, but there's something about Majora's Mask's dungeons that just makes them unmemorable to me.
    On the whole they are more well designed and difficult than Wind Waker's, but everytime I replay Majora's Mask I'm always like "nope, don't remember this room at all!" Maybe it's the reuse of Ocarina of Time assets, not sure.

    I must be a moron then, because I permanently noped out of the game after running out of time right when I got to the Woodall boss. I like to take my time and explore in Zelda games (especially in dungeons), and Majora's Mask is structured in a way that doesn't really make detailed exploration possible. Honestly, playing against a timer is one of my least favorite mechanics in all of gaming. It ruins the game for me. Phantom Hourglass too.

    My personal list:
    4. Stone Tower
    Heresy, I know. But between the overuse of the Elegy of Emptiness, the awful Twinmold boss fight (in both versions, mind you), and the annoyance of collecting all of the Stray Faries, I just don't really look forward to replaying this one. Great music, however.
    3. Woodfall
    Not bad on its own, but the other two score higher due to the lack of challenge this one offers. Seriously, the puzzles are straightforward, Odolwa is a joke, and just way too much of Deku doing the same thing over and over again. Again, great music.
    2. Great Bay
    Confusing? On a first playthrough, yes. But once you learn to, quite literally, go with the flow, this dungeon becomes a cinch. No Stray Fairy is too out of the way, either. Gyorg isn't the best boss, but miles better than the other two metioned already. Also, it actively uses both the new Ice Arrows, as well as making you pull out the Fire Arrows from time to time. At least Ice got some use here, unlike in OoT...
    1. Snowhead
    Amazing boss in Goht, as well as an amazing central puzzle. Dungeons that have a central hub area with multiple exits tend to be my favorite dungeons in Zelda. It truly makes me feel like I'm making progress when I can visually see how far I am in a dungeon, and how much further I have to go. The Stray Faries are put in inconspicuous-but-at-the-same-time-obvious spots, rewarding the player for a keen eye for the smaller details. And who doesn't love rolling around as a Goron?

    For me Majora's Mask is a letdown and that's mostly due to the lackluster design of the dungeons. Only the Stone Tower is standing out with its design, but it's so large and slow I could barely finish it in time. Even with the inverted song of time. In any other game it wouldn't be a problem, but in Majora's Mask it unfortunately was.
    If there was a general ranking of all the dungeons in 3D Zelda games the other three dungeons in MM would certainly be in the bottom half. I think the most fun to be had in this game is outside the dungeons and that's a shame, because in my humble opinion dungeons are the bread and butter of Zelda games.
