Thank you for all your comments guys really appreciate this the video was just a look at some of the experiences I have gone through on this journey And still go through. With the day to day custom paint stuff the channel will be going in a different direction soon but will benefit you all 👍
I don't know if it will be of any consolation to you, but I can tell you that thanks to your channel I have returned with enthusiasm to the world of airbrushing. I have learned many tricks thanks to watching your videos and I have significantly improved my technique. Your content is quality and you explain very well how to do things, but you must keep in mind that unfortunately there are many more people interested in "absurd" content than in technical videos, people use TH-cam more as entertainment than as a learning tool, And that means that channels like yours have those numbers and others have millions of views. Cheer up, I hope you continue transmitting your knowledge to us and thank you for doing so.
You're the man Rob and your channel is one of my favorites. I love your videos and love your paintings as well. You are not only a great painter but a fantastic teacher. A true gift for explaining things! Know that you are greatly appreciated and respected. Thank you for all that you do my friend.
I am retired and disabled, got bored doing nothing so I started working with leather. Got a cheap air brush kit to stain my leather. I used to paint a lot when I was young and thought I woud try my hand at creating art work with the air brush. Saw your video and you inspired me. It's been a year, and I completed my 100th painting, mostly portraits. I enjoy the videos and I learn so much, thanks.
Wow I did much the same started doing some leather work last year, and thought try some airbrushing, and haven't touched any leather in 6 months all airbrushing.
Everything you said about custom work for bikers really opens up wounds for me.. all the crap I got from dreamers who think the crash hats and the like can be done for a pint of beer is exactly why I stopped custom work. This is a great insight vid in the fact that its all happened to me .. .. I need therapy now.. lol.
I used to custom build guitars and wind guitar pickups. I remember starting out people used to think "home made" not "custom built" and only wanted to a "hobby home made" price. Consequently found it hard to find the right customer. But I did by making one for free for a pro-player who shall remain nameless which got the instrument noticed and the right price for time and materials was no longer a problem and ended up with a two year waiting list making instruments my way individually to suit the individual at my price.
It’s only down to you my old mate that I have continued with the airbrush. You have a work ethic and patience second to none. You are without any doubt the best tutor out there. You say it as it without the bull shit or trying to portray it as a black art. I had the same when I was custom building guitars and hand winding guitar pickups. No one really wanted to help you start out and everything was shrouded in secrecy. Then when it comes to charging out - it’s a bloody minefield. At first when your work is not known people just think of the guitar as hoeing “home made” and that’s how much they want to pay. It took a long time to educate the people out there that each instrument is built to order and to your style of playing. If they still wanted to pay the couple of hundred for a factory built plywood guitar then go ahead but my price is my price take it or leave it. Before I stopped I had a waiting list of 2 years.
PMSL. 😂🤣😂 are you upset? 🤔 You hit the nail on the head about alot of customers. I could go on and have a rant myself. Custumers:- If they are right, they don't need to argue. If they are wrong they dont have the right to argue. Carry on with your video's they are all in the learning curve for the genuine. Good to watch someone real and down to earth. Thanks Rob.
Thank you very much for this great video! I appreciate people who talk so openly and honestly! I was self-employed for many years as a computer scientist... now I'm retired... but there were and are exactly the same types that you describe there too... unfortunately you have to have these experiences. and whoever continues anyway loves their job! I really enjoy watching your videos and I always learn a lot, even though I've been airbrushing for a long time. Only as a hobby...but mostly miniatures. I'm looking forward to many more videos! Stay as you are...
Oh my. You brought back such memories. By trade, I am a photographer and used to concentrate on weddings. I follow your channel because airbrushing is a new hobby. Just for me and what I like and no money changing hands. However, as a wedding photographer, I had some impossible assignments. Meeting a bride for the first time who takes up all three cushions on a three-seater sofa and then says “Make me look beautiful!” Is soul destroying. (Plus, the camera adds poundage!) So I left weddings to those who thrive on challenge. Now I concentrate on Landscapes. You have to find that niche that works. Mind you, I wonder how many airbrush artists have used solvent based paints on cheap polycarbonate crash helmets!
I love you're videos Rob! I don't care if it's car or motorcycle parts or portraits. The more detail in the artwork the better! Don't get me wrong sanding, filling, priming, base coat, more sanding, artwork clearing. That's just part of it. It's the details in the artwork and tips and tricks to get the finished product for me. Keep the videos rolling out Rob! God Bless from the states my friend!
LOL it comes with experinence i'v been painting 47 years and would never undertake a custom job except under my terms . I made a mate come in every weekend to prep his Lambretta and it took 13 months he realised what takes (no artwork) . 2 yeaars down the line and it looks absolutely mint. Also i just painted my own helmet and like you say nightmere and it was simple design and for the time and effort i could have earned a grand easily . I do work for a TH-camr but rest assured i charge him but he's got an average off 4.5k subscibers . Nothing in life is easy .
I'm on you tube every night. First thing I do is check to see if that little red dot is there on the bottom in my subscribed area. I know there's going to be another video from you if it's there. I haven't missed one in a few months. I'm new to airbrushing and enjoy the tips you give as much as the artwork you produce. Great channel, I'm hooked. Keep it coming!
Great video. I've recently started my custom paint journey and the trial and errors of being self taught is definitely hard. TH-cam videos from knowledgeable people like yours have helped tremendously and I am truly and grateful those kinds of videos exist. It's quite challenging doing custom paint while being inexperienced and a clinical perfectionist. I always delve into the procrastination/perfectionism loop where I delay starting projects because Im afraid they won't end up perfect to my own unreasonable standards. I'm in awe every time I see cars with nice flat clear coats and such knowing how much skill and time goes into it.
really enjoy your vidios i am semi retired and started airbrushing just befor christmas you have taught me so much it is the best airbrush vidios on youtube thankyou dont give up
😂😂😂 Are you sure we aren’t related 😂 but in all honesty, I love your channel, I’m not going into business with painting, I’m just a 62 year old apprentice farmer who istaking up diorama who wants to learn how to airbrush, but !! I also love watching you paint the portraits, in fact that is one massive lesson on take your time, …..a bit like farming, ..anyway, nothing better after a good days work watching a master at their work…kindest regards, john
Hi Rob , I can really relate to what you’ve said, I get it all the time in my little business making the airsoft guns and bits , I was one of your very first subscribers and it was down to you and what you’ve taught me through your vids that actually made me comfortable using my airbrushes doing fancy jobs on the guns and cases , I’m no where near your level by any means but I love the painting, keep them coming Rob I really enjoy your content.
Spot on ! I am self employed in the trades a lot of what you say applies to that and is exactly same! Done the custom stuff in regards of airbrushing here and there in Germany 30 years ago. All you are saying is the reason, despite youtube, that since I restarted airbrushing I am having a clear plan what and what not to do.
I say what most have said so far. So not much i can say other than thanks for putting a smile on my face. You are 100% accurate on the journey. I've done the same but other trade. Thanks again for the content.
Hi Rob. Thanks a lot for all the effort you put into teaching all of us who are just starting out. I watch you from Spain. I'm just starting to learn with an old, cheap, no-name dual-action airbrush from when I was at High School a few decades ago and I painted models as a hobby. At the moment, the videos I watch the most and the ones I am most interested in are the ones in where you talk about very basic things, because my level isn't up to much more, but I enjoy with admiration every second of the rest of the videos in which I see you airbrushing and explaining how to do it. By the way, I've followed your advice in several videos. I have saved money and finally bought a H&S Evolution 2024, because I have the feeling that the airbrush, I am trying to learn with does not respond the same way twice in a row. I expect to receive the new one in September and if I can't make progress then it won't be because of the airbrush. 😁
@@Spanished.3 hi thank you for your feedback and support with the channel you have picked a brilliant brush that I know you will get on with and have no Dramas with so well done 👍if you get stuck with anything just drop me a message or email I am here to help all the best Rob

My second paint job was a Shoei Neotec II, a modular helmet. I was so happy at that time, first customer outside my friend circle, first serious money... until I had to strip it down to bare shell becouse the thing was unmaskable, cutting out rubber seals included. That was the easy part, but reassemble it... I literally cried, and I'm 35.
Great vid rob I to have tried the scooter scene and helmets only to be screwd over probably better just sticking to paper and canvas and enjoying the whole thing rather than stressing like mad if someone gonna pay ya or not......keep up the good work mate
It’s funny ya know, I was just thinking about these exact same things the other day and why I cringe at custom paint work on vehicles and ANY form of helmet, it deters me instantly. I intend to go down this path you’re on, but strictly airbrushing, pin-striping and lettering, no clear coat, no body work, just artwork only. I’m glad you gave stats on your viewer ratios, favored topics and the hours you put in, very valuable information. Great advice. Love your content. I am into plastic models and like to watch your tutorials. dont know why but your tutorial videos reminds me of Bob Ross😀
Wise words Rob, i had exactly the same issues with customers doing my leatherwork, but sadly i didn't get any advice when i started, i underpriced everything and took on jobs that ended up costing me money and time, if you haven't got a business head, then its tough, i felt i had to explain to the customer why a item costs what it did and how many hours it took to make. I even decided not to mark up the hides and the hardware just to try to bring the price down for the customer..I've sent items to customers and not been paid, but thats my fault for being to trusting and thinking everyone is honourable lol.. Most customers are fantastic and its a pleasure to make their falcons a hood, but when you get a complete nob head, its unbelievably stressful and takes the joy out of your passion, i've lost my mojo a few times, it's hard to get motivated sometimes. .Airbrushing for me is just a hobby at the moment, i'm still struggling with the basics, if i did manage to do a artwork, i'd have to pay the customer to take it away..😅
Thank you I think we all go through these times I know exactly what you mean when you say you lose your mojo that happens to me all the time That's why I did this video today i was meant to start the Batwing but couldn't get my head into it today thank you for sharing your experience really appreciate The feedback and support with the channel all the best 👍
I started watching your videos the other day. I just got my first airbrush an Ultra 2024 from H&S. I paint miniatures like Warhammer 40k and stuff like that. Well that's what I was going to do at least lol. Now after watching your videos I'm going to branch out and do more. Cause hey' why not? I got the airbrush, painting is painting and its fun. Have you got any videos geared towards miniature painting with the airbrush? Or do you have any recommendations for that otherwise?

Yeah, back in the day (my day was the 80s) I would under cut myself for fear of missing out on the work. I learned that if they can't afford you, it is what it is. You don't go to the grocery store and try to haggle over a gallon of milk. That's why I loved working at Death Row Motorcycles. I would give the owner Frank the price I needed for me, and he had no problem jacking it up get to get his cut. And if I brought in a client of my own, I kept it all unless it went over a grand, then I threw him 10%.
Skrew them ppl that want that basic 101. I love progression of a project I've known a lot of custom airbrushes that have owned their own shops and the trades made him real quick heads the same could be said for tattoo artists though I would like to see more characterizations like Spider-Man's amongst the background I've been out of the scene for a while and I'm arrested as hell
Your channel is spot on!.. I've been a subscriber for some time but life has got in the way and I haven't thought about airbrushing much. Rob awesome video, i dont care what you painting if your making a video im watching it if 1o min or ten hours. Id rather watch you then the crap on the television. Maybe consider doing membership like alot of creaters where you get i dont bonus videos or what ever. Like 2.99 month. I have couple creators i follow and part of membership to. Do lives then people can do super chats or stars whatever that all helps. Maybe do painting on a panel or portrait during a live and let subscribers watching live, bid on painting to help with coins, like steve leahy or scott Mackay or what ever maybe do a giveaway or something for members or we can bit on tutorial portrait paintings or something. Im in us, shit id love bid or purchase your art work. Just idea's or food for thought, what ever so you can keep making content, caint wait for the next video.

I’m new to airbrushing and I’ve picked up a lot of knowledge from the likes of yourself and other top artists as an ex competitive bodybuilder who’s now retired I won 2 Pro universe titles I thought my sport was full of jealousy and full of Criticism but I’ve noticed the art world seems to be very bitchy especially on the forums like you said so I watch more TH-cam vids to gain my experience and stay away from the forums keep up the great work for us newbies as I’ve started to get into portraits myself 🙏🏼

Yes definitely sometimes it's hard to when work is on the low 😕 and you have to grit your teeth and do it but now for me I will jump at the word no money isn't everything I would rather be skint and happy
regarding the videos people are not watching, why not use some of the footage and artwork as shorts. Film a little bit before and after and create the 1 minute short. This gives you views for the custom paint work and you also have the best of both worlds. One other point, with the big custom jobs, time lapse is ideal, again film them or parts of them and put up a shorter video. Looking forward to exploring your channel

Thank you I think we all go through these times I know exactly what you mean when you say you lose your mojo that happens to me all the time
That's why I did this video today i was meant to start the Batwing but couldn't get my head into it today thank you for sharing your experience really appreciate
The feedback and support with the channel all the best 👍
Wise words 👌👌
Love the video unfortunately that's life. When is the tutorial on airbrushing the soap box lol
Good rant and it should make you feel better, so when is the next portrait or cartoon, I can't wait, as your tutorials are brilliant.
Your channel is spot on!.. I've been a subscriber for some time but life has got in the way and I haven't thought about airbrushing much. I'm nearly 40 and would love to really get into this I have a really good set & unused. I have a Harder & steenback infinity cr plus and a sparmax comp. Any advice would be welcomed. Keep up the good work mate👍🏻
@@Mr360whip all I can say is get that compressor fired and enjoy the journey you won't look back 😉
@@dredfxcustompaint I'm close to it I'm having a lesson with Georgio uccellini soon as I get a few hours to myself, he's a well known artist. Thank you.
Even though I'm not an airbrush user I really appreciate all the work you put into your videos Rob as I know there is a lot of work that goes into filming and editing videos👌
My TH-cam channel has 88 followers but my claim to fame is one of my videos has 61K views but I didn't get a penny for it😭😂😂
Rob awesome video, i dont care what you painting if your making a video im watching it if 1o min or ten hours.
I did a course with simon murray and dru blair about 15 years ago now and that cost me £400.00. was well worth it tho.
Great video. I like this ki d of thing. Airbrush comparisons are good, and the painting tutorials, but i really like seeing this type of informative video.
I gotta ask though..... what the hell is Mukka?
Mukka mean mate or friend
I’m new to airbrushing and I’ve picked up a lot of knowledge from the likes of yourself and other top artists as an ex competitive bodybuilder who’s now retired I won 2 Pro universe titles I thought my sport was full of jealousy and full of Criticism but I’ve noticed the art world seems to be very bitchy especially on the forums like you said so I watch more TH-cam vids to gain my experience and stay away from the forums keep up the great work for us newbies as I’ve started to get into portraits myself 🙏🏼
Well done on your past achievements 👏 👍 that's big as for forums I know exactly what you mean comments can be cruel and when your a beginner
That's all you need I tend to just have a quick look at things on the forums just to see what's going on 🧐 remember if you ever need any further help or info
Drop me a message on here or email ROB.DICKONS@VIRGINMEDIA.COM all the best and thanks for watching rob
Thanx rob v much your work is phenomenal years and years of experience patience commitment and hard graft this is what people don’t realise
@@TonyMount-sq3hi same your end mate don't forget that 😉 👍

That's why I wear a cap 🤣🤣 always a bad hair day thanks for watching
@@dredfxcustompaint haha you know the secret too . No worries keep up the daily slog fella we appreciate the effort
I learned to say no
Yes definitely sometimes it's hard to when work is on the low 😕 and you have to grit your teeth and do it but now for me
I will jump at the word no money isn't everything I would rather be skint and happy
@@dredfxcustompaint yes sir.. there were times I would take in junk for nothing but I learned to say no and it always seem to work out less stressful
regarding the videos people are not watching, why not use some of the footage and artwork as shorts. Film a little bit before and after and create the 1 minute short. This gives you views for the custom paint work and you also have the best of both worlds.
One other point, with the big custom jobs, time lapse is ideal, again film them or parts of them and put up a shorter video.
Looking forward to exploring your channel
PS, I don't see ads on my computer, ads are blocked - sorry
@@bramelsheretan get the adds back on 🤣🤣 this is my income lol 😆 thanks for watching
The Americans seem to make more money than English on utube don't they.
Yes
Mate buy a kitten, I have seen 30 second cat videos with 10 million views. Or maybe get hot lady in a bikini to stand next to you while you’re airbrushing away, millions of views for sure. 😊. Keep your chin up my friend.
Yes 👍 😂😂😂 that stuff always works my next video will have a semi naked woman in it 😉 good call thanks for the heads up,
