Personally I felt quite good. For the first time since Revenge of The Sith I did care about what was going on. In The Force Awakens I didn’t because it was just the same as a new hope but with more superficial characters. But I was ready to forgive this movie as it leaded to The Last Jedi where all the characters grew somehow. But The Rise of Skywalker threw it all away and The Last Jedi is the only one of the sequel trilogy who tried to make things right by correcting JJ Abrams’ errors. Rogue One was okay as an action movie but the characters were very weakly defined.

JJ made other huge mistakes, too, such as not bringing Harrison, Mark, and Carrie back together on-screen and talking about the importance of having a prominent black character then making him a clown. So, admitting one mistake doesn't excuse JJ's bad decisions or lead me to think that he's better than Rian Johnson. Those two should both stay far away from Star Wars. Heck, Rian only ruined one franchise (Star Wars), JJ ruined two (Star Trek and Star Wars) and is on his way to really screwing up the DCEU now by hiring an American-hating writer for the American character Superman.

Kathleen Kennedy ruïned star wars. Johnson helped her with that.
They both clearly know nothing about star wars and are just trying to push their own agenda with this franchise. George may not be the best director but he did understand star wars since he litterly invented it. The biggest mistake the fans made was making George believe he wasn't good enough for his own creation therefore pushing him to sell it to Disney. Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau are in my opinion Star Wars last hope. Because without them Star Wars wouldn't be Star Wars anymore. But that's all my opinion ofcourse

It’s selfish to avoid a director a lot of Star Wars fans liked to stay away from Star Wars. If he wants to do an episode of Mandalorian, and you don’t want to watch it, fine, no one will force you. The fact is, as a film director, Rian Johnson has a lot of fan. He directed to great movies, like Looper and Knives Out, and two great episodes of Breaking Bad. He just released a movie you didn’t like, this doesn’t mean he has to stay away from Star Wars. The fans who liked his film deserve to get an episode of The Mandalorian directed by him. You don’t. Then don’t watch it and let us have our time of pleasure.

You make some excellent points here. Most people aren't aware of what 'direction' or 'cinematography' actually mean. They think if there's a pretty image in a movie, that's good cinematography. It's actually defined as the art of telling a story using camera and lighting. This means camera placement/movement/focus/framing, use of suitable color and light, etc. in order to make not a picture, but cinema - moving images that convey a sense of what's going on, both atmospherically and narratively. In other words, to tell a story.
What those people are admiring is the set/costume/prop design, mostly.

      1. Finn and Rose both die in the crash when she crashed her speeder into his.
      2. The First Order soldiers - who were just getting orders to kill everyone a.k.a no prisoners - take one minute to open a lock on the battle-walkers and have a couple Stormtroopers shoot Rose and Finn, who are lying dazed and defenseless right next to them.
And even if for some absurd reason they survive and the First Order just ignores them, they would STILL be dead, because they were good four or five KILOMETERS away from their base and Finn had to dragg a injured person behind him, through a SALT FIELD.
By the time he managed to return the battle should be long over, with them being left behind on Krayt to be hunted down and killed by their enemies.

Write 100 plots, run them through 100 fans and see what floats on paper and shoot one of the best ones, not the worst ones. And use a good director, you can afford it. How could a studio fail such simple tasks?

Close ups are good at highlighting something important or fostering a claustrophobic feeling in the audience. Using them too much to say "this is important" only makes the audience feel that either nothing is important, everything is small, or both. The movie comes off as tiny in this epic setting. Everything in the movie feels like it's inconsequential. Sure, you can tell an inconsequential story in this setting, but there are payoffs in the film that should be huge and somehow feel like nothing at all. Luke dies in this film and it comes off like a wet fart because by that time the audience realizes that none of it matters.
Which is exactly what happens when you put a nihilist in charge of a film like this.

I went in to see it with an open mind, had my 10 year old daughter with me. When Luke tossed the lightsaber over his shoulder I knew this was going to be bad. I hung in there giving the movie the benefit of the doubt until the Leia flying through space scene. My whole body literally cringed, catching my daughters attention, and I tried to show her that I was enjoying the movie but it was too late. Even she felt it at 10 years old, it was just bad bad bad. I always think of “blocking” as only considering the outer silhouette of each charter in the shot. Basically not looking at the inner detail, but just the cut and profile of the character. If you think of Rian’s cinematographer in that light, taking every character as a silhouette, everything would look like a big bunch, with actors and robots all crowded together as a big mess.
I’m not saying you can’t consider the inner detail of a character or object, it’s just while “blocking” this is all I consider when filming.

The throne room fight scene has absolutely no force powers whatsoever despite having TWO force users present, but hey, Kylo randomly stabs the ground for no reason (11:56) and features a vanishing weapon (14:39), so it's a goddamn masterpiece.

  • @somosUS
    @somosUS 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

The first time I saw those guards in the throne room, and how they brandished their weapons and bust into "cool" poses when someone (I can't remember who) shouted at Snoke, I knew that any action we'd get from them would be trash. That one moment immediately undermines them. They're about as intimidating as that kid in high school who thought he could fight because he watched a lot of kung fu movies.
It's nonsense. It's stuff like this that both distracts and detracts from the experience. (Incidentally, Gus Johnson does a video about this sort of thing, how everyone always cocks their gun when they "mean business," when, if they actually knew how to use it, there'd already be a round/shell in the chamber.) Point is, a real badass doesn't posture or pose. They don't need to; their power is in their presence. These walking lobsters scream of incompetence. They aren't even in range to engage. What's the point of taking a ready stance twenty feet away from the person you're guarding? The whole thing is just puerile and inept, and it was done at Johnson's direction.
Contrast this with the Imperial guards we see in Return of the Jedi. They literally just. stand. there, and they still look more intimidating than anything else in the OT, save Vader, himself. Would you mess with them?

So at 5:18, he forgot the first rule of shooting a scene. The rule of thirds. ANYTHING in the center of the shot is treated as insignificant to the viewer subconsciously. The space that people view the screen has meaning. Riding off into the sunset is always shot the same for a hero triumphant for a reason. Framing the scene correctly captures the movement and helps write the story. That is the job.
