    I think 동무 originally came from the Chinese term 同志 which formally means comrad but can be used to call someone a friend.

    • @wcchudds1840
      @wcchudds1840 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Actually, the term 동무 was widely used in the whole korean peninsula before the division into north and south. South Koreans started to relate that word with communism and stop using it after Korean War when the conflict between the north and south was at its extreme. Even in the old textbooks centuries ago, the term was widely used in every regions. :)

      동지 means 同志. 동무 is pure Korean

    • @toothpasteboy1763

      It should be 同務

      @@choipichiim 동무 is sino korean

      @@idk._.666 Weird. The hanja for 동무 doesn't show up on the Naver Dictionary but 동지의 한자 does
      Correction:
      동지 = 同志
      동무 = 同務

    It's important for the both sides to learn each other's variants, as it is the only way for the Korean language, as one, to not totally fall apart.

    • @brandon3872

      Yes, they are currently working on a unified dictionary so people from both parts of Korea will be able to understand each other. I hope this is successful.

    Coming from China. In Communist nations comrade is the same as mate rather than comrade means mate. What I mean is that everyone is a comrade in the Proletariate Revolution. Thus everyone is a comrade. Very subtle difference.

      I've visited Seoul, the capital of South Korea, and in my experience most people could understand basic words like hello, thank you etc, but not enough to have a full conversation, although I met someone who spoke fluently without even a Korean accent, I thought they were American until they told me they were Korean.
