I love Roger Allam, and I also adore Daphne. I read this novel only 3 years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. This is brilliant.

A skeleton seated on a stool LOL - I don’t mind some of Daphne’s work but after hearing that I had to switch off

And yet that's literally what was discovered during the renovation of an old house, and inspired Du Maurier's novel. Nor is it the only time that happened - the seated skeleton of a young woman was found in a famous Kent manor house in the 1890s during renovation...

Why? If you read history, you'll find that people were sometimes thrown in the privy to starve, walled upside a closet to starve, etc.
