    For that big and heavy of a truck, 18.1 mpg isn’t bad at all. I have a 2022 LT Duramax and I’m at 16.9 at 10,600 miles and that includes towing. I’m usually 18-18.5 not towing. My display is pretty spot on with the pump. I really can’t complain about that. My 04’ Expedition used to get 12, so it’s still a big improvement. The 35 gallon tank seems to be a really good size and offers a lot of range. Sometimes I only fill up once a month.

    I have 6.6 duramax history In the past . I had a 2013 Chev duramax diesel. Beautiful. It drove perfect and with grace and power. I’m in the market again for a
    2024 Chev 2500 diesel duramax 6.6 L !

    Gale Banks has a great video showing the updates to the engine. One of the biggest changes is stronger valve springs for more engine braking.

    GM has always been known for the best ride in the HD market. Independent front suspension is a big part of that!

      And the reason I will never buy another GM HD truck until they change it. There’s a reason the others have trailing arm/link coil over suspension. That torsion bar shit is unbelievably outdated and is just garbage for an HD truck. I’ve owned two so I’m not just armchair quarterbacking it here ans do not have any brand loayalty. I go with what impresses me and is more sound mechanically. I’ve had a new Ram 3500 each of the last five years and they honestly were great. However, now that the Ford has changed the interior and given the Powerstroke another bump that is what got me excited. Granted my Powerstroke has 2300 miles on it but I’ve already ordered a 24’. I’m very impressed with the HO motor and that takes a lot.

      @@specforged5651 I've never had a front end suspension or drivetrain issue on a GM pickup with independent front suspension and that is over half a million miles! I tow 90% of my driving anywhere between 7k and 17k lbs on a variety of trailers with the biggest being 38' Grand Design fifth wheel. Can't beat how well my independent front suspension rides instead of old outdated solid front axles!

      I have a 2022 Duramax Silverado 2500 LT and I really like the independent front suspension. What sucks is Ram trying to use it for the rear axle. That’s why their payload is awful and they squat so much.

      Another previous owner here, yes IFS rides better but didn't last anywhere near as long without expensive repairs, never again.

      @@gabrielback5615 My experience exactly. And honestly I wouldn’t say they ride any “better.” I think better is a relative term. Better to me means solid, tight and like a one ton truck should ride. They appear to ride smoother because they have lighter duty parts in them. Not to mention they have so many connection points, bushings, rod ends, etc, etc they start to feel loose, make a lot of noise and wear tires in a short time. The Fords and Rams just feel more solid and robust. Stick your head under there and it’s easy to understand why.

    I get a pretty decent mpg towing for work almost daily with my 2023 Silverado HD. Helps that it's a diesel ofc. I like the looks of the 2024.

      My 2022 has 10k on it, and it keeps getting better. I also dropped a titan 56 gallon fuel tank under mine. I tow a 42-foot fifth wheel and didn't care for that small tank...

      @@Pantelifts10 My 2018 GMC 3500 HD didn’t start getting 15 MPG city and 24 MPG Highway until almost 40,000 mileage. I just got a 2023 GMC 3500HD and day 1 Highway MPG was 17 and 14 MPG city. I now have 1,100 miles on my truck. I would think that the break-in would be about the same. Keep in mind these numbers are not towing numbers. Trust me when I say you will be happier with your diesel than a gasser. I had 2 GMC 2500 gas trucks and never got more than 12 mpg city or highway. Towing mpg was never better than 5 to 6 mpg, only got 6 mpg going downhill. JK about the downhill commit.

    I’d like to see TFL undertake a long/term 3-5 year longevity test that focuses on HD Diesel reliability between the big three brands using real world use over an extended period. The KPI’s to include reliability, regular maintenance cost, tracked warranty issues, one-off maintenance cost, truck performance, and trouble free motoring. For $80 to $100K purchase price of todays vehicles, we consumers expect greater reliability included in these vehicles. No more junk GM, Ford and Dodge.

      People would rather see content of new vehicles. Long term info likely can be found on forums with owner updates and reviews and fuel economy generally tracked on Fuelly.

      Long term reliability for single items isn't really a fair comparison. If they had 20 of each, that would be a slightly better comparison

    I love your TH-cam channel
    I drive a 2021, 6.6 Duramax. My fuel mileage got better after 25k miles.
    I think that’s pretty good fuel mileage I think they get better after they get ran in

    Seems pretty solid to me. Likely better than my '15 Sierra 1500 6.2 with level and KO2s.I'm happy when I get 18mpg on an all highway trip.

    Great data point. I think a longer run that includes a regeneration would be more indicative of real world expectations. My guess is (like Ford) it will stretch it out on the highway and suffer when in stop and go and hills. Regenerations will definitely have an impact, but curious about how much of an impact. My 2022 Ford F350 CCLB with 6.7 has impressed me over the last 3400 miles (since new).

    I have a 22 with about 30k on it. A couple weeks ago, we drove from NC to AL, about 340 miles, and I made myself stay near the speed limit for a change. I averaged 22.6 mpg on that trip! The truck is unforgiving when I get on it though, it typically does 18.5-19-ish with city driving or steep hills. Gets 10-12 towing 15k#.

      Try driving in a city like nyc and the mpg will look more like 13mpg it’s a shame they don’t rate the gas mileage in real cities instead they go to a small town and say that’s city mileage

      @@king502NB Oh I have, there, Atlanta, Boston, my job takes me all over. And I think idling in traffic is almost as bad as hauling butt; you can see the number dropping while you sit sometimes.

      @@ALMX5DP I mean the sharp drop from 20+ when things get less mellow. It does well for a 4 ton ox with a turbo V-8, but will bite you quick if you get in a hurry or want to have fun. I’ve towed several times in the mountains of KY, TN, WV, VT, NH and the uphill grades seem to subtract efficiency more than the downhill coasting adds. When I’m going downhill or level I will often turn off tow/haul to lower rpm. I calculate at the pump, too.

    My 2020 regular cab 4.3L 4X4 1500 would have pulled the same number. This is very impressive, adding 4 additional gears really helps.

      I’ve always liked that 4.3 engine. They’ve always been reliable and offer decent power and efficiency. Something about a big 6 cylinder revs my engine. I loved the 4.2 inline 6 (275hp/275 torque) in my 04’ Trailblazer. It was the 4-spd auto and super long gears that held it back.

      @@alanj7306 reliability was the main driver for me. I never kept cars for a long time. 2020 broke me of that bad habit! So I bought for long term instead of instant gratification. That’s why I’m looking at HDs for the next truck because of the robust nature but I have no interest in turbos unless on a oil burner.

    Also, you guys should do payload testing. You always test while towing but never test solely with max payload. Some people only use their trucks for hauling but dont tow.

      17k? How about a GCW of 37k with a SRW? Depending upon the height(wind load) of the load, I can get anywhere from 6-9mpg with my 21 F350 on I80 through Pennsylvania or up Monteagle to Chat.

    It's crazy how fuel efficient these trucks are getting I love it! My 5.0 2022 f150 averaged 24mpgs on a trip from Raleigh to Asheville NC. 26 mpgs in eco mode doing 60 to 70 mph.

      It is crazy, my 2021 3.0 duramax silverado gets 26 city and 33 highway lol. I've done trips where I have a tailwind and I'll get 35.8 mpg over the 120mile ride lol.

    These loop tests are instructive but there are a variety of factors going into mpg. What I've found on my '22 GMC Sierra AT4 6.2L here on the Gulf Coast (low altitude) is that speed is the single biggest factor affecting mileage. Around town the 6.2L does ok, 15-16 mpg avg. Hwy figures at Texas interstate speeds (80+) only improves to 17-18 mpg, but if I'm traveling 2 lane country roads at say, 70 mph or less, the mileage jumps to 19-20 mpg. I think the ride height w/ 2" factory lift is a big culprit. Can't fault the GM engine or the 10-speed auto... they're a wonderful combo.

      Yeah these loops only tell so much. You’d have to have all vehicles you’re comparing it to drive in a single file line at the same time same route to be able to compare MPG. My 21 Cummins HO will get over 20 on two lane highways, but that’s not to say the others wouldn’t as well

    I drove my family members 2019 duramax empty no wind 120 miles which mostly highway and I got 24 MPG. I towed 13k 5th wheel on my return trip and got 12.5

      My boss said as soon as he hooks his 7 way plug in on his trailer it instantly drops his milage lol- trucks got 475hp and it can't get good milage towing , quite sad and I'm a duramax fan for life

    Had a 2001 Duramax 2500hd 2wd. Got 21mpg and 31mpg with a custom tune download. She ran over 500,000 miles before needing a overall. Best truck I have ever owned ❤❤

    2022 Ram 2500 with the 68RFE has 100 miles on it did a 150 mile run similar road conditions the truck had 20.5. calculated mileage was 19.8mpg. not bad for new and the 6 speed tranny. I just went from a 2017 Duramax with the 6 speed alison which was very similar mpg. Like both trucks..

    My 2011 1/2 ton Sierra with small lift kit, 34 inch tires at 65 MPH on level surface can barely manage 18-20mpg. For this truck to get 18mpg is impressive.

    To me that mpg isn’t bad. With the emission systems the MPG can greatly change with regens. I’m also curious about the gas engine mated to the 10 spd. I see that being a great benefit to the gas engine!

      I heard that the 10 speed tranny for the gasser is different than the 10 speed behind the Duramax.
      Can someone in the know either confirm or dispute that one?

      I haven't drove one but I feel the gasser and 10 speed would hold back the gas engine 4stroke Gas engines have a huge power band

    Banks tore down the 2024 diesel already to analyze the changes directly to the 24 6.6 DuraMax vs the 23. They had both versions torn down.
    He said the 24 is a much better design. He really was positive of the changes.
    Banks also dynoed the new GMC Denali Ultimate. He looked at it differently than usual as it was not possible to get the stated max at 1600 rpm as the transmission downshifts to 2150 rpm between shifts and not 1600 where the peak flywheel hp is.
    He was still getting big numbers. Especially the torque numbers he got suggest that GM is underrating these motors. Less than 75 lb ft of torque lost at 2150 rpm (torque has already peaked and is dropping a bit now) vs the 1600 max. About 7% loss vs the typical 14%.
    Regardless, they make everything they claim at least!
    Banks also felt that the design was capable of being more fuel efficient and is a cleaner burning engine. Maybe lass DEF use?
    Pretty nice truck though… and I an a Ford fan. The new interior is definitely nicer than Ford’s. I prefer the GM interior over the Ram as well. The Ram’s 12” screen is gaudy in comparison. This is definitely subject to personal preferences.
    I did think the DuraMax would have done better but this is still a very new truck. Based in the Imperial gallon that 18.4 is actually 22.1 mpg imp. I was hoping for 24 mpg imp, so close enough for now.
    Still prefer the 6.7 PowerStroke even though I don’t own one currently.

    My 2016 LML, before I put 35s and a lift, would do 23-24mpg on the highway. I thought that was crazy good back then. Driving in town and highway mixed, I’d get 15. So to me, 18 is amazing.

      @@ALMX5DP no sir. I swear on my life, doing 65-70 on the highway the truck was getting low to mid 20s. (When it was stock at least) Where I live trying to drive thru town was stop light after stop light. So my tank averages were coming out to about 15.

    Doing a mix of city and highway (more city than highway) i get 7.2L/100km (32.6 MPG) in my 2020 Chevy L5P. The only thing I do is add Stanadyne to every tank and it makes such a difference. Before using it i was getting about 9L/100Km (26 MPG) doing the same driving. Compared to my 05 LLY the mileage is just about double for the same amount of fuel and the truck sits much taller than my 05 but is still a crew cab short box. Talking with several diesel mechanics and a place that all they do is rebuild diesel fuel system components they say Stanadyne is the best additive for diesels hands down, and i can attest to this as I have been using it since 2008. Would love to see someone do a test on a vehicle with about 20 000 miles and do 3 tanks without and then do 3 tanks with and see the results.

    I’ve always wondered why the mpg numbers from the pump flow totalizer instrument & the odometer are the baseline and not what the vehicle computer calculates from the vehicle instruments.
    Do gas pump instruments get calibrated more often? What’s the logic for believing the gas station measurement of gallons delivered to the tank over the number calculated by the vehicle?

      I suspect the fuel gauge is not as accurate as the pump since it is going by an approximate measurement and is not legal for trade. There is also the possibility the refill amount is off by a tiny bit as well. All in all I suspect they have a very good system of keeping things as close as possible on their tests which is why I come to this channel looking for information.

From a dead stop if you hit the throttle quick at least 1/4 or 1/3 down, it had dead pedal for almost 3 seconds. I mean i hardly responded then hit real hard. Also driving around the diesel just didn't seen responsive till it spooled up. I found it rather annoying. Seemed like a lot of turbo lag. What's your experience? Did the truck learn and improve?

    My 2005 GMC Sierra 1500 gets just over 12mpg with city and highway. 14mpg+ on a good day with the best I’ve ever got being 17mpg+ driving 55mph with no wind.

    As a truck driver, I see those new Ford powerstrokes on the side of the road looking for antifreeze just about everyday.
    Now I have a 2020 chevy Silverado 2500hd duramax, I can easily get between 22-23 mpg empty (best is 26), and 11-12 pulling my camper. Vary impressed with that truck.

    I have a lifted 2022 3500 Duramax with all Banks, turbo pipes, cold air intake, exhaust on 35s and get 22 mpg at 80 mph. I think you need to do another test on a calm day.

    With having an average speed under 40mph that sounds ok. I was more interested in what it averaged on the highway. My 05 2500hd 4x4 consistently got 22-24mpg on the highway as long as I was nice to her. I expect this truck to be better than or at least even that. Especially with 10 gears.

    My Powerboost has only averaged 19.6 mpgs after 14K miles here in eastern U.S . Mostly highway at 75. Does better in city of course. Huge amount of torque but I desire a truck with more payload for a small truck camper some day so these videos are very helpful.

    It would be interesting to know if the truck went into regeneration mode during that loop as well. That will always hurt your fuel economy.

    I just ordered my new 2024 LTZ. Thanks for the mileage test. Now that I have it the truck gets about 16MPG around town. If I keep it under 75 MPH on the highway, then I'll get 20MPG on the highway. However, if I go 85 MPH the mileage tanks.

      @@ArtbyLordTV I do use a fuel additive and oil treatment. With a tune and new turbo I expect to pick-up another MPG city and highway. Then I'll be where I was with my old LML which had a few tweaks. I expected the Allison ten-speed transmission to be more helpful mileage wise, but it isn't. I'm sorry about your mileage.

      Yeah I swapped out the intake for a cold air, I use cetane booster and still crappy. I did throw a code in the first 200 miles about the emissions system which GM said just to clear and send back. Wondering if it was really a problem and they just ignored it

      @@ArtbyLordTV I remember reading there was a problem with the DEF system. The dealer salesman said I should only use GM DEF. But, even the low-cost Walmart brand DEF meets "API regulations and ISO 22241 standard for purity and concentration." So, BS on that! I installed a 100 GPH FASS fuel system on my LML and will again on this L5P. It helped more than I thought it would. Expensive, but worth it! Right now I just have a K&N air panel intake filter. I use the Power Service and Lucas fuel additives. The oil gets ZMax.

    I owned a 2021 Chevy 2500hd duramax that averaged 18 to 20 mpg average driving. I now own a 2024 zr2 that just turned 4k miles. So far I am not to impressed with my mpg 13 to 15 mpg. I generally don't judge mpg until 5 to 6k miles on odometer. I really love my truck but hope the mpg comes around a bit with a few more miles. Great truck

    my 2014 has the EFI live and since i did that ... went from 750 800km in town .... thats not pulling my trailer ... now its easy 950km per tank and highway will be 1200km if im around 110km max ... and those are honest numbers i get

    I believe why the trucks trip gauge was higher than your calculations was because of the prior miles traveled in the vehicle being at a higher efficiency.

    Not bad but my 04' Cummins 2500 with 272,000 miles, auto 5 speed, 4 door, long bed gets that around town. Like any vehicle, after a good break in period, you find the sweet spot for that truck. Know when to accelerate easy or hard depending on the conditions. I have noticed in 8 speed vehicles if you accelerate quickly in the lower gears, the engine is easier on the fuel consumption.

      There is a guy out there already doing tests with one. He concluded it doesn’t get any better mileage than the 6spd and also the final drive is about the same so that makes sense. He said 0-60 is actually a tad slower on the 10spd but it is quicker in passing acceleration.

      So ya as you said stomping it on the highway should be faster for passing power

    Love it...Awesome truck , so much better than electric truck. I would like to see a challenge been a gas or diesel truck vs a electric truck. I know the gas truck will win by a long shot. Electric loses so much range once you put it to towing or even turning on the a/c or heater you lose half the range.

    My 2020 duramax gets 25.1 mpg and it's great. While pulling my 24ft cargo trailer loaded it gets 15.3. I'm very happy with it. The gas version gets 12 at best not pulling.

    You had a 10psi difference between your front and rear tires. Fuel economy would have been a little better if they were all at correct pressure.

    This might be the record for the closest In vehicle MPG versus real world calculation I've seen on TFL. The fact that a brand new truck was only off by 0.3 MPG is impressive

      The newer vehicles seem to be getting more accurate. My wife’s 23 Tucson is usually 0.25-0.50 mpg of the hand calculated result.

    I had a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 diesel, I was getting 19.6mpg and I drove fast, near speed limit I could get 22.4. New diesels have so many computers and emissions stuff on them. Getting near 19 is very good

      The 2001 ram also made about half the power of the new diesels, so the new diesels are drastically more efficient at making power.

      My Ram 2500 with the 6.4 and 4.30s does about the same. Such is life with a gasser. We just got back from a 2173 mile drive towing our 5th wheel (about 12.5k pounds) and had to stop for fuel 15 times lol.

    When pumped, Diesel fuel makes a lot of foam on top. You aren’t going to get an accurate volume measurement using a station pump. The only way to get anywhere near the actual mileage is on a full tank or use a glass container, etc. Or just use the trucks computed numbers.
