    Ugghh. The one thing I tried to teach my own children and my students (a retired teacher) is that the only thing you own that cannot be taken away is your character; your word. All of the physical things can disappear, but no one can take your integrity. Your word should always be your bond, protect it with all your might. Wishing you a wonder filled, prosperous 2025. ❤

      That’s such an important lesson, and it really hits home for me. Our character and word are the only things no one can take away, no matter what else we lose. All the physical stuff can disappear, but what we stand for and how we show up in the world-that’s what stays with us. I’ve always tried to live by that, and it’s nice to hear others value it too. Thank you for the reminder, and I hope 2025 brings you lots of good things! 💛

    I have learned to appreciate my ambulation and being able to do the things I want/need to do when I need to do them. I am post operation on my knee and it has been a very long year of being humbled. Learning to ask for help, accepting that help gracefully and being appreciative of the effort to help. This was a life changing year as well. I look forward to a New Year and a new me!

    I’m proud of you , too. I was raised in rural America, and looking back, I love the childhood I had with all the hard work and self-sufficient knowledge. It’s worth it. The hard work is worth it.

      Thank you so much-that really means a lot to me. I was raised in the country too, and it’s true, the hard work is absolutely worth it, even on the tough days when it feels like there’s no end in sight. I love knowing that this kind of life leaves such lasting memories and self-sufficient knowledge, not just for us but for the next generation as well. 🧡

    You're not being negative Amber, you're being realistic which is always better than the "unicorns and rainbows" stuff some people put out on social media. Being self-reliant is a lot of work and that needs to be talked about. I think the fact that some people online act like it's so easy is why many newbies fail at the self-reliance - they don't realise how difficult it is and are not mentally prepared for the work it requires.
    I grew up on an off grid smallholding (no running water and electricity) and enjoy physical work, but I'm still struggling at times as I not only work outside the home, I also have chronic pain issues which don't help (I just push through the pain most of the time, I have to). I live on my own so do the vast majority of work myself, including repairs, gardening, preserving etc. I also rescue cats with FIV, dogs and foxes so my 1/3 acre is like a madhouse, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I'm an accountant by profession, but I feel more accomplished and I'm much happier shoveling manure onto my raised beds or fixing fences than sitting in an office and staring at the screen all day 😁.

    • @FairlyRooted
      @FairlyRooted  3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you so much for your thoughtful reply! You’re absolutely right-being realistic about self-reliance is so important. It’s definitely not as easy as some make it seem online, and that lack of honest conversation can leave people unprepared for the hard work involved. I admire your strength in pushing through the pain and handling everything yourself, from repairs to rescuing animals. Your experience really highlights how rewarding, yet physically demanding, this lifestyle can be.
      It’s inspiring to hear that you feel more accomplished working on your smallholding than in an office-there’s something truly fulfilling about that hands-on, self-reliant work. You’re living a life that many of us dream about, and I can tell you’re making it work despite the challenges. I hope you continue to find joy in the process, even on the tough days. Keep up the amazing work, and thank you again for sharing your journey! 🧡

    I relate so much when you described the feeling of being duped by a shady person. For me, the good thing I've been able to take from going through stuff like that, is you kind of gain a super power for sniffing it out sooner. Also, like you said, learning to trust your gut feelings. Our subconscious minds perceive more than what we are consciously aware of, and gut feeling is our body's way of trying to communicate that to us... That's what I think anyway. So sorry you've all had to go through that, you are not alone, not by a long shot!!
    Ps: I also feel like people have changed since the pandemic. I've been saying that lately, so again, you're not the only one noticing. Staying hopeful that things will level out though. I think the pandemic was very mentally and emotionally impactful for a lot of people, so hopefully there can be some healing and growth.

    I like your fireplace !! Your hard work does not go unnoticed. U are building a great life for your family. I am 70 & raised 4 kids in suburban midwest U.S.
    I downsized to have no house payment. The small house (1,080 sq ft) was a fixer upper. You have to sometimes make do with what you have. I was thankful the house had new siding & new windows.
    I am like you-I love gardening & being outside. I grow herbs for cooking & hot teas, veggies with flowers in my front yard (just grass along the edges). My bro in law used his bobcat & we brought in soil to make berms b/c this area has the most sun. I do not like to mow, so the big back yard is full of raised beds. Year before I had a huge oak tree trimmed. This past Spring borrowed a log splitter & a friend did the cutting & I helped stack. 5 wood piles later....There is so much to learn. Now I want to grind my own flour for making bread. Yes. It is hard work. But it keeps us healthy !! I enjoy your channel. ❤

    • @FairlyRooted
      @FairlyRooted  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you so much for your kind words! It sounds like you’ve created a beautiful space, and I really admire your hard work and how you’ve made do with what you’ve had. Gardening and being outdoors really do keep us grounded, and I love that you’re growing herbs and veggies with flowers, making everything feel vibrant and alive. I can definitely relate to the satisfaction of stacking wood and making the most out of every opportunity.
      A wood splitter is definitely on our list for the future-hopefully in 2026! It would make life a bit easier when it comes to all the firewood we need to keep the house warm. And grinding flour? Love it! It’s these little steps and the joy of creating something with our own hands that make it all worthwhile. Thanks again for sharing your journey, and I’m so glad we’re both on this path of learning and growing. Wishing you all the best! 🌿❤️

    Those lessons were more valuable than going to school! You all did such a wonderful job handling all the adversities. Take all of your knowledge and put it together in a book or some type of resource manual. As for people... eeeeww sometimes they can be evil, but they always reap what they have sown. Wishing you continued success and I am looking forward to seeing your progress in 2025❤❤❤😂

      Thank you so much for your kind and encouraging words! You’re absolutely right-those life lessons, though hard-earned, are often far more valuable than anything learned in school. It’s been a tough but rewarding journey, and I’m proud of how far we’ve come. I love the idea of putting everything together in a resource manual; it’s something I’ve been thinking about, and who knows, maybe 2025 will be the year to do it!
      As for people... you're right again. The truth always catches up with them in the end. We just have to keep moving forward and focus on the good. Thank you for your continued support-I’m so grateful to have you along for this journey. Wishing you a wonderful 2025 full of growth, joy, and success too! 🌱❤️

    Merci pour cette vidéo qui montre une réalité souvent caché. Il n'y a rien de facile a changer de mode de vie. Puis plus on a de choses et plus on a de risques d'avoir des surprises. Des mauvaises mais aussi des bonnes qui arrivent souvent avec la patience et les efforts. Bonne année 2025, je connais bien les difficultés des commotions. On apprend a la dure et oui malheureusement il y a de plus en plus d'humains malhonnête. Mais avec le temps on réalise que ce sont eux les tires et qu'ils vont récolter ce qu'ils ont semé. Il faut se laisser du temps et ne pas tout vouloir que ce soit fait pour hier. Il faut se laisser du temps pour bien planifier nos actions. Je sais on voudrait en faire beaucoup et en savoir beaucoup mais la vie n'est elle va a sa vitesse a elle. Il y a juste 24 hrs dans une journée, il y a des imprévus, il y a notre santé, ect... J'ai essayé de faire l'impossible plusieurs fois dans ma vie, ça a rarement été une bonne idée. A 50 ans ma santé m'a quitté et je suis devenu invalide, tête et cœur hors service. Depuis je me refait une petite santé et je joue a devenir plus autosuffisant. Un petit tracteur , une bêcheuse , bref des outils ça aide beaucoup en particulier si comme moi on a plus la santé car chaque efforts doit être bien réfléchi et productif. C'est avec les années que nos efforts sont récompensés. Je fait le bilan une fois par année pour vérifier si j'avance dans la bonne direction. J'ai 67 ans et malgré plein d'erreurs je suis heureux car j'ai avancé dans la bonne direction malgré que je suis souvent tombé dans les pièges, l'important c'est d'apprendre et de nous en sortir. Bonne suite dans vos projets. Je suis dans le coin de Rimouski.

    Thank you for always being transparent and real in your videos. The tradwife trend is absolutely ridiculous, and it has a lot of parents thinking they aren't doing enough and/or aren't doing it right.

    • @FairlyRooted
      @FairlyRooted  3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thank you so much for your kind words-I really appreciate them! I completely agree; the tradwife trend can set such unrealistic expectations, especially for parents who are already doing their best. Every family is different, and there’s no one “right” way to do things. I think it’s so important to focus on what works for your family and to let go of the pressure to meet someone else’s curated ideal. We’re all just figuring it out as we go, and that’s okay! 🧡

    It's been a while since I popped in to see how you're doing. I am really glad to hear your recovery is going well. My mom recieved a concussion about a year ago as well and has been slowly recovering since then.
    While on one hand I feel like you are quite literally living my dream with such a beautiful farmstead, I know that you and your family have put your everything into getting here. I've been watching you since you were making balcony garden videos from your various apartments!
    As a fellow mom of three who is trying to figure out her health, I know; the work never ends. I try to ride the balance and do what I can when I can and try (try! and fail most of the time 😅) not to stress about it. I'm going back to school in February. Wish me luck.
    Like you I don't understand how people can screw other people over. I understand people who are put into a hard position due to economic conditions, but still, my basic mode of operation is one of solidatity and vulnerability with other people. I don't expect to be messed with. I am so sorry that you were scammed this year. I've had similar experiences and it definitely feels like a violation.
    That being said, community is the remedy and it seems like you have found some good people to have in your life.
    Greetings from across the pond!

    • @FairlyRooted
      @FairlyRooted  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thank you for your thoughtful message! I’m really sorry to hear about your mom’s concussion, but I hope her recovery is steady and that she’s finding relief. It means a lot to me that you’ve been following the journey for so long-starting from those balcony garden days! It’s a constant balancing act, especially as a fellow mom, but I try to focus on doing what I can when I can, and I totally get the struggle of not always succeeding at that.
      Best of luck with going back to school in February! You’ve got this, and I’m sure it will be a rewarding challenge. As for the whole trust issue, I completely agree-being scammed feels like a violation, but it also reminds me of the importance of having a strong, supportive community, which I feel so grateful for.
      Sending you warm greetings back across the pond!

      @@FairlyRooted Aww, thank you for the lovely message! It brightened my day to hear back from you. I've loved watching your videos/journey. It means a lot to me to know that there are people out there who I relate to so much. Sometimes I hear you express an idea and find myself going "Yup" or nodding along because I've had a similar experience or thought. It even surprises me (in a good way) when you casually throw things in there like planned obsolescence and socialism 😆.
      My mother is doing well, but there are still some lingering side-effects: since the concussion she feels very intense moments of gratitude; like if someone holds the door open for her it'll almost make her cry. At least with things like that we can laugh over it 😂.
      Thank you for the well wishes in school! It will be a very big challenge for me, but I am itching to start working towards my goal of becoming a midwife. You're one of my inspirations when it comes to realistic perseverance. Wishing you all the best and a happy new year!

    I’ve learned that a lot of people suck! There are only a few wonderful people in this world and when you find them, hang onto them. I’ve also learned that you can’t depend on anyone but God and yourself. I’ve also learned that your health is extremely important, and you need to look after it. I’ve also learned that it’s better to be alone, than to be surrounded by toxic people…even if they supposedly family. I’ve also learned that the government is horrible, if you can get them out of your life…do it!

    • @FairlyRooted
      @FairlyRooted  วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I’ve learned that about family too. Blood doesn’t always mean you’re treated with love or respect, and sometimes the healthiest choice is creating distance, even when it’s hard. Surrounding yourself with the few truly wonderful people you come across is such a gift-and so is taking care of yourself and your health. It’s a lesson I’m still working on myself, but I know how important it is. And yes, the less entangled with bureaucracy and the government, the freer life feels. These lessons hit hard but shape how we live going forward. Thank you for sharing. ❤️

    I used to drive myself crazy with the “whys” especially when it was from negative things/experiences, but as I’ve reflected and gotten older, there is always a reason, maybe your TBI was a head on reminder to rest, put yourself first, trust that it will all be ok and to help you lean on others more for support? Xx
    I developed FND after years of burying trauma - one day my body became disabled… I had to do the mental & emotional work for it to get better x

      I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts. I’ve definitely wrestled with the “whys” of my TBI, especially in relation to everything that’s come with it. It’s been a challenging part of the journey, not always understanding the purpose behind it. But as I’ve reflected more, I do see how it could be a reminder to rest, to prioritize myself, and to lean on others for support. Your experience with FND really struck me as well-sometimes the body forces us to slow down in ways we don’t expect. It’s comforting to hear your story and how you’ve worked through it. Thank you for sharing that wisdom!!

    Hello Amber, I am so glad you are learning about being careful, and slowing down to do the research of the facts. If someone is rushing you be extra careful. Example: Here in the US we have companies that will redo a shower or install a floor and many other projects. Some want to do a one day install as soon as possible. Knowing that once they do it you can not return it like a book at the library. So with those folks it is absolutely essential to check them out well. I think when they have been doing commercials on TV for 10-plus years they are probably doing something right.
    It was really nice to see you smiling ear to ear today. You are wearing all the right colors today esp sitting next to the fireplace and fire. God bless y'all and have a fabulous New Year, Steven

    I know you don't do much with raised beds, but if you want to plant strawberries with a little less work (ie quack grass and weeds!) consider some beds, 3 or 4ft by 8-10 feet, 8-10 inches high, even 6 might be ok. I am an urban gardener so most of my beds are raised, but just going off your quackgrass complaints...raised strawberry beds would keep the majority of it out of your berries. I have not had any grass inflitration into my berries, whereas the neighbor who has theirs on the hill next to their fence always has to search around tall grass clumps to find the berries. And if you have a mulched path next to it, great, and if not you can mow pretty close to the bed to make a path. And with your pond, I bet you will find the perfect area for some blueberries. Have fun!

    Been homesteading for 9 years now. Lesson learned and kinda implement for the last few years is taking your time. We are a couple who work full time jobs. For the last 2 years, we were lucky since my bf is a college teacher and is off most of the summer. But we did dream big on our 0,6ha homestead and got crushed by the job it represent. The house also needed kinda urgent repairs but we got the job done by professionals. We are now at the "luxury renovation" that we can probably do ourselves but we take our time to do it.
    Outside, it took like 4 different buildings before we were happy with the rabbits situation. It was stressful and we should have wait to be ready before having them (they kinda felt on our lap but still...) We only built our chicken coop this year and had our first real flock. We had one last year for practicing and see if we want to continue. We liked them and we knew how to build the coop and exterior pen also, so we did it!
    We built gardens, food forest, blueberry and raspberry fields and hops rows. Yes, best time to plant a tree is 10 years ago and second time is right now but man, they need care. The blueberry and raspberry fields are lost in weeds and we don't have the time and energy to do it all. I'm at the stage that I say, ok, they are planted and surviving. When I will have more time, I will take better care of them and they will thriving. But for now, I do bare minimal just for them to stay alive so I won't need to replant them later. Having taking my time, I would have prepare better.
    Also, I have to stop finding next year new project. I have enough! haha!

      It sounds like you’ve learned some valuable lessons along the way! Taking your time is such an important shift, especially when balancing full-time jobs and homesteading. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of big dreams, but it’s wise to recognize when you’re taking on more than you can handle. The way you’re approaching your "luxury renovation" and taking it slow shows how much you’ve grown in your journey.
      I totally get what you mean about the trees and gardens-they require so much care, and it can be overwhelming, especially when life keeps moving fast. It’s great that you’ve set realistic expectations for now, knowing you’ll get to them when you can. And yes, I think we all tend to want to start new projects, but it’s so true-sometimes we just need to pause and appreciate what we’ve already created! You've done amazing work, and I’m sure when the time comes, those gardens and fields will thrive with your care. Keep up the great work, and here’s to a bit of slowing down!

      Hi there! Hope you don't mind if I butt in but maybe I can give you a glimpse from my perspective. I myself don't believe in supernatural powers. I was born into a Christian family and raised as such however started questioning the Bible and the Christian dogma early on. My questions were never answered to my satisfaction and there are too many contradictions and plagiarism in the Bible for me personally. And the argument that the universe necessitates a creator is flawed in my opinion.
      Still, I consider myself to be rather spiritual since we as humans always are trying to search for answers and a purpose. I look at the world, the universe as it is and am in awe at how everything evolved and sometimes how things just seem to work out "miraculously" (for a lack of a better word since we are restricted by the existence of words to describe things.) Us humans are just tiny little "insignificant" (I mean insignificant to the universe but my existence is very important to myself) specs in the vast universe so when things work out in my favor, I like to say thank you because I simply appreciate my luck or good fortune. I guess it's because in the interaction with other humans and nature we just show gratitude and like to transfer this gratitude onto other things as well.
      I don't think the universe has a purpose or a plan for us. It simply is the way it is in a magnificent way that "allowed" this planet to support life. Nonetheless, there are billions of other stars, surrounded by billions more of planets in billions of different galaxies and chances are pretty high that life evolved on several planets in several galaxies simply because the ingredients for organic life are vast in the universe. Humans are nothing special yet I feel very special because I understand that I am unique the way I am. I have a limited power to make this one life of mine count thus I derive purpose from myself: how I and my actions make other people feel, how I treat animals and the natural world, whether the world is better off with me. Since I am high in empathy, I can rejoice in the happiness other people are feeling but at the same token I also feel the pain others feel. I soak in the plentiful colors of diversity, I look at how a simple shift in genetics can change everything, I listen to the multitude of different sounds, how things smell, taste, and feel - and I am in awe that I can appreciate them in the NOW because yesterday is past and the future is always a second away.
      Just knowing that my body is made from star dust, that my body might carry atoms from famous people like Einstein, that the water we drink is purified dinosaur pee, that we can grow crops because our planet happens to have an atmosphere, ... makes me treasure my life and acknowledge that I hit the jackpot when the universe started cooking its soup of atoms.
