      Bravo, Ted!!! If you can keep the squash bugs out of your garden, squash plants can go wild producing. I hope you continue to be able to keep your kids healthy. That includes keeping them off screens (ipad, phone, computer), limit the time. Get them in the garden with you and the kitchen. God bless.

    I froze summer squash for years . My favorite food is fried summer squash every morning.This year squash bugs killed them all quickly ,I never liked frozen squash as it was mushy when heated after freezing . I now grate the squash and salt it then refrigerate overnight . I rinse the salt out in plain cold water the next day then squeese out all the liquid i can before packing it in zip lock bags . I steam it as a veg or add it to soups or breads in the winter... much better and not soggy. I tried dehydrating it too but did not care for it rehydrated .

    • @TheGinamac79
      @TheGinamac79 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In my opinion 3 minutes seems too long for blanching? How do you keep it from getting to mushy after you take it out of the freezer to cook?

    • @Latebloomershow
      @Latebloomershow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well this is my first experience so we shall see if it’s mushy but I just wanted to have something in my freezer. As you know with my small garden I really never had anything to preserve except eggs and tomatoes

Try my new method on freezing summer squash sometime to see if you like it better . I am proud of you following your dream and sharing it with others :)

    I didn't plant any yellow squash this year, either. I didn't even think of it. I froze about 25 pounds of tomatoes and picked another 25, picked and froze a pound of okra and harvested delicata, Cushaw, spaghetti and Pa. Dutch crookneck squashes and put them on the porch ahead of all this rain. I've heard anywhere from 3-10 inches forecast. I have two almost ripe cantaloupe I don't know whether to pick or not. I've always let them ripen on the vine, but the last two I picked after rains had very little flavor and so much water that it gushed out when I cut them open. Eggplant and peppers are flooding in and I am the only one who eats the eggplant. Do you have a favorite way to preserve them?

      @@Latebloomershow I am on my 2nd Food Saver. My mom used Seal-a-Meal growing up and it worked great. They got bought out and were off the market a long time and now that brand is sold again . I can only comment on Food Saver. My first one I had probably 15 years and wore it out...my 2nd one I have had 10 + years and it is going strong. Use it all the time, especially in the summer. I flash cook many veggies, drain and quick freeze on a tray, they when frozen put in a Food Saver bag vacuum bag and use the machine. I have food in the deep freezer 3 years processed that way and it still tastes great when I take it out. The trick is to flash cook, drain well, blot off as much water as you can, quick freeze on a cookie sheet the veggie, then bag and vacuum seal. Best of luck!
