  • One of my all-time favorite movie musicals is Alan Jay Lerner & Frederick Loewe's adaptation of THE LITTLE PRINCE in 1974. It starred such legendary performers as Bob Fosse, Richard Kiley, Gene Wilder, Donna McKechnie, and today's guest Steven Warner. It may not have done well at the box office or with many critics, but there's a lot to love about this star-studded film.
This interview with The Little Prince lead actor is due to the collaborative efforts of The Industry podcast hosted by Dan Delgado. He introduced me to Steven and our full interview was over two hours and more than half of it was devoted solely to THE LITTLE PRINCE. We go into a lot of detail about the filming process, his interactions with each of his co-stars, and what his life was even like before becoming the Little Prince.

Thank you for posting this interview! Like many others I was introduced to The Little Prince when I was a child. My mom had seen it first, right after her mom had passed away, and it deeply touched her due to the thematic elements of life after death and the hope that the film displayed as the Pilot heard the Little Prince's laughter in the stars. It gave her hope during that difficult time. Many thanks to Steven Warner for being willing to share so many wonderful stories of his experience making the film all those years ago.

Just discovered this (1974) movie and found it fascinating! Didn't know this existed until today...when searching for the 2015 animated version (which I thought was awful). You gave a phenomenal performance, and (IMHO) should always be extremely proud of it. THIS is how I always thought the movie of this wonderful story should be portrayed. When I learned Richard Kiley was cast as the pilot, Gene Wilder was playing the fox, and Bob Fosse was the snake, all bets were off! I HAD to watch it right away.... and I did! Had ten years of ballet growing up, and used to watch all the (old) musicals so I could watch the likes of Gene Kelly, Cyd Charisse, Fred Astaire, etc. in motion. (Like you, I loved to watch their footwork and how they so seamlessly integrated their whole body into the movements with emotional dimension.) In addition to owning a hot air balloon (Areostats having originated in France), I also previously owned a 1946 Aeronca (taildragger), and so this story has always resonated with me on many levels. How very lucky you were to have had the opportunity to know these fascinating and supremely talented individuals. I envy you! For your contribution (no small change to actually be carrying the movie), I thought you were absolutely believable, had impressive timing & execution, and were the magical charm in this project...every bit as enchanting in your role as the adults. Thank you for so generously sharing your personal experiences with the rest of us... immensely enjoyed all the back stories. Well done!!!

I agree, the animated version missed much of the heart of the original story.

The Little Prince was one of my childhood favorite. I found the DVD, a few weeks ago, and my daughter and I sat down and watched it, and like I did as a child the ending scene brought me to tears again.

As of today, the 1974 film of The Little Prince is absolutely the very best, I doubt there will ever be a better movie like the one in which you played the leading role. Steven, I'd like you to know what your profoundly moving performance means to me. Bravo to you and to all involved ! Thank you so very much for this wonderful interview, both parts 1 and 2 !!!
Steven, I wish you the very best. Kindest regards from Buenos Aires, Argentina

It was a fantastic movie, it really contributed to the message of the book I read as a child, now that I've grown up, met my own rose, and Im worried about adult nonesense, was really helpfull to change the perspective to what I used to have as a child, and realize the he hasn't died in me. You did it fenomenal, I thank you so much!

It sounds like Steven got the role because he effortlessly embodied the character just by being himself... which is exactly how Antoine de Saint-Exupéry would have wanted it!

I have lots to say about what I think of the film, because I love it! I stumbled upon this interview while seeing if TH-cam had a video of the demo tape with Lerner and Loewe performing the songs. I will type it up another day.
