In my opinion, the 50's, 60's, and 70's produced more great music than any other era that I can think of. The duo was under contract with Screen Gems which produced shows such as sitcoms: Father Knows Best, Dennis the Menace, The Donna Reed Show, Hazel, Here Come the Brides, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Gidget, Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, The Flying Nun, The Monkees, and The Partridge Family. Also the original distributor for Hanna-Barbera shows.
Boyce and Hart were huge part of my life, Thank You!!!! I was an Air Force brat, we were stationed in Hawaii from 68 til 71, nt first concert was the Monkees...all us young teenage guys were pissed because our"girlfiends" were nuts about them,,,lol , but we went to the concert, HIC arena back then, I will never forget....saw the Doors the not too long after....

When he says ‘I was walking to work’... I remember listening to music back in those days and walking to work cause I couldn’t afford a car. Lots of friends and no money, but great music.!! Just met my wife. Great memories. Didn’t realize at the time that those were the best days of my life.

My story is very similar to Resolute. A friend and I had season passes and were roaming around AstroWorld in Houston - must have been the same time. '76, rainy and humid sounds about right. Well, humid is a given. We stumbled upon a small sign that read 'The Monkees in concert at the Space Needle' with an arrow pointing in that direction. There had been no prior advertising nor mention of their appearance. (a blessing in disguise) We walked over and planted ourselves relatively close to the stage. I think it was an afternoon show and remember that it wasn't very crowded. Yep, Davy and Mickey came out and did their little song and dance routine. Being a hardcore Monkees fan since their TV debut, it was a real treat, especially in such an intimate setting. I was lucky enough to see them again in '86 along with Peter. However, this particular concert was sold out and held in a large venue. Weird Al was the opening act. What awesome memories! The '60's - '70's were a great time to be alive! Now ... not so much.
I never knew how accomplished those two dudes were, behind the scenes of that era!...and I wonder...did they get some sort of residuals for all those hit records they wrote?...I hope so...they deserved good money for their efforts.

in the spring or early summer of 1976 I think, I just happened to be at six flags over Texas in Arlington TX. as fate had it, I ran into my girl cousins & their BBF's. we were all 17-19 years old then. so we all hooked up & rode rides & stuff. just hanging out. at some point one of them said hey look the Monkee's are playing this afternoon in the music pavilion lets go see. it was a warm very humid afternoon with rain threatening all day and brief showers would break out. I noticed a homemade banner stating the names of the Monkees, they were not all original members present, hung above the stage. I remember Jones, Dolenz, Boyce & Hart, for sure, were on the banner. and I thought "what is this?" but they put on quite a show for the Im guessing 500-600 people that showed up. the girls and I were up right up front standing at center stage when at some point Davy Jones comes over & reaches down to shakes some hands. without thinking I put my hand up too never expecting he would take my hand out of all the hot girl hands reaching up to him. lol but sure enough he took my hand gave it a nice little squeeze & winked at me. (Thanks Davy. RIP). I'm sure he knew that for the rest of the day I was going to be very popular with the girls in my group. Which I certainly was. my 5 mins of fame. ha ha. the show was very good the band pretty tight & LOUD. we all just enjoyed it very much. too bad there is no video from it. apparently. . A day to remember from long ago.

They toured theme parks and recorded a live album in Japan. They also made a studio record that was released at the same time as a Monkees greatest hits album, and was pretty much lost in the mix. Davey Jones, came to Williamsburg Iowa in the early 90's for an event (far cry from the height of his career). Walked into the little town bar and hit on girls my age (half his age), playing the "you know who I am" card. Lol!!!!
The monkee show was on t.v. i got their records as birthday and cristmas gifts. mad magizine and singles were bought with newspaper route money.... underground newspapers and f.m. stations changed my outlook....this is an intersting look at what was being sold as product... THANK YOU !!!....bob

What an amazing life. To be able to see that life through his eyes must have been surreal. I could almost visualize everything as he so eloquently described it. Just like his amazing ability to capture a story so beautifully in his compositions.
I always loved their work, and in the early seventies, I had the album they made with Micky and Davy. When they came out, I bought their collected CDs.
Isn't it wonderful. When you are this talented, all you have to do is quietly, without fanfare, talk about the stuff you have done, and everyone watching, (I think) says to themselves, "Hey, thanks for the songs and the perspective .... a little bit of life is better because of what you contributed."

I remember watching Boyce and Hart on I Dream of Jeannie and Bewitched when I was growing up. 'Out and About' remains on my all-time favorites list as do a few others. Shame about Tommy but it was great to hear Bobby's history from him personally. Thanks... I really enjoyed the interview!
Those songs are still on my iPod short list with the Monkees hits, and the Beatles, the Beach Boys, The Stones, The Byrds, The Turtles, The Mamas and Papas, The Zombies, Badfinger, Chuck Berry, Elvis, plenty of Motown... (It's a big short list with at least 600 songs.)

Guess I'm not the only music geek who finds the Monkees' sessions alnost as interesting as Dylan's Nashville sessions. Mr Hart's understanding and talent shines through.
Boyce and Hart wrote my of my all time favorite songs. They go hand in hand with The Monkees. All of The Monkees albums feature songs by Boyce and Hart. Some of the best in the mid to late '60's had to offer, much different from the complexity of The Beatles music at the time, although I do like The Beatles. I own all of The Beatles remastered CDs from 2009 and original Monkees LP's on the Colgems labeled in very good condition with the exception of "Headquarters" and "Instant Replay'" on excellent Rhino re-issues and all The excellent Rhino CD re-issues. The only exception is "Head" which had a couple of good songs( The Porpoise Song" and " As We Go along") but otherwise a waste of money. I have an excelllent original A&M Recordd 45 rpm pressing of Boyce and Hart's " I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight", one of my all time favorites. I was a young teen in 7th grade in 1968.
An "infectious..." guitar lick doesn't have to be difficult to play, either. Teaching myself to play back then, Clarksville was the first real 'lick' I learned (if we don't count 'Little Black Egg' or 'Dirty Water'). Anyway, start with a stiff pick, the G 'cowboy' chord, and first whack the fretted 6th string and then the open 3rd string - and then work those open 3rd and 2nd strings over while moving down on the 4th string and... Oh well, you'll figure it out - if it even matters any more. Boyce and Hart were major players of that era. Great interview by the way - and thank you Joe.
I got to hear Boyce and Hart in Glendora, California, in about 1966. I was going to college at Azusa Pacific College. There was a Catholic girl's school right next to the Azusa hillside campus. This school, St. Lucy's Priory, had a benefit concert every year with bands from the L. A. area. The year before I heard about it, they had the Watts 103rd St. Rhythm Band, Pacific Gas and Electric, and Steppenwolf! The next year, when I heard about it they had Jim and Jean, hippie folk singers, We Five who did the song "You Were on my Mind," and Boyce and Hart. Boyce and Hart who were working with a movement called L. U. V. - "Let Us Vote," just before they made it legal for eighteen year olds to vote. Boyce and Hart sang several songs that later showed up on Monkees albums. They also had as an accompanist a guitarist, Louie Shelton, who wrote the opening riff for "Last Train to Clarksville." Cool show, and a delightful display of pop music. I've never forgotten it, or Boyce and Hart. They were good!

Louie is a good friend.. I’ve got a interview with Louie too we will put out soon. Long story short I wrote a few country songs from the late 70’s thru mid 90’s. I wanted to be a rock star hundred and twenty pounds ago:) but ended up writing country and having a few guitar shops in middle Tennessee and Kentucky. I thought Boyce and Hart were the best kept secret of the 60s. Everybody knew their sound and their songs, but only the musicphiles knew about them. They were in the middle of the 60s sound.

In some cases I wish the internet was available in the 60s like it is now. I guess it would have broke too many hearts if the teenyboppers had known their 'band members' were just faking it when it came to play instruments. I have known for sometime about Louie Shelton's amazing guitar licks. I was beginning to learn how to play guitar then. They sold tons of knock-off arrangements(sheet-music) that I would muddle through. As my guitar knowledge grew and my playing by ear skills improved I would eventually find the right key the song was recorded in. I still was not able to discern until much later that there was 3 different guitar parts for Last Train to Clarksville. I had thought it was just a story but it was a story of a young man about ready to be shipped out to Vietnam. So many legendary songwriters wrote songs for the Monkees. That is one of the knocks against their HOF induction. But a lot of 60s hits were covers. But The Mokee's hands were tied with Don in charge. I can understand using Studio musicians for recording on. Finally I noticed The musicians playing songs on shows in the 60s. Most of the guitars were not hooked up to amps.
Oh, I just decided I wanted to be a piano player, Mozart, after thinking about it a couple a days and in a few months I composed a piano concerto in c minor and then four or five symphonies -- no big deal
So much information rolls off his tongue for 15 minutes straight, without so much as an Um or Ah. And given that he was married in 1958, the dude must be much older than he looks.

the show was very good the band pretty tight & LOUD. we all just enjoyed it very much. too bad there is no video from it. apparently.

In the mid-’70s, after post-Monkees solo projects failed to set the world on fire, Boyce and Hart teamed up with Micky Dolenz and Davy Jones of The Monkees and went out as Dolenz, Jones, Boyce and Hart. They toured theme parks and recorded a live album in Japan. They also made a studio record that was released at the same time as a Monkees greatest hits album, and was pretty much lost in the mix. Davey Jones, came to Williamsburg Iowa in the early 90's for an event (far cry from the height of his career). Walked into the little town bar and hit on girls my age (half his age), playing the "you know who I am" card. Lol!!!!

The monkee show was on t.v. i got their records as birthday and cristmas gifts. mad magizine and singles were bought with newspaper route money.... underground newspapers and f.m. stations changed my outlook....this is an intersting look at what was being sold as product... THANK YOU !!!....bob

What an amazing life. To be able to see that life through his eyes must have been surreal. I could almost visualize everything as he so eloquently described it. Just like his amazing ability to capture a story so beautifully in his compositions.

I always loved their work, and in the early seventies, I had the album they made with Micky and Davy. When they came out, I bought their collected CDs.
Isn't it wonderful. When you are this talented, all you have to do is quietly, without fanfare, talk about the stuff you have done, and everyone watching, (I think) says to themselves, "Hey, thanks for the songs and the perspective .... a little bit of life is better because of what you contributed."
Larry Taylor, was such a great bassist. I was fortunate to get to know him before he passed away. What great stories he had about those early days.

I remember watching Boyce and Hart on I Dream of Jeannie and Bewitched when I was growing up. 'Out and About' remains on my all-time favorites list as do a few others. Shame about Tommy but it was great to hear Bobby's history from him personally. Thanks... I really enjoyed the interview!
Those songs are still on my iPod short list with the Monkees hits, and the Beatles, the Beach Boys, The Stones, The Byrds, The Turtles, The Mamas and Papas, The Zombies, Badfinger, Chuck Berry, Elvis, plenty of Motown... (It's a big short list with at least 600 songs.)

Guess I'm not the only music geek who finds the Monkees' sessions alnost as interesting as Dylan's Nashville sessions. Mr Hart's understanding and talent shines through.

Boyce and Hart wrote my of my all time favorite songs. They go hand in hand with The Monkees. All of The Monkees albums feature songs by Boyce and Hart. Some of the best in the mid to late '60's had to offer, much different from the complexity of The Beatles music at the time, although I do like The Beatles. I own all of The Beatles remastered CDs from 2009 and original Monkees LP's on the Colgems labeled in very good condition with the exception of "Headquarters" and "Instant Replay'" on excellent Rhino re-issues and all The excellent Rhino CD re-issues. The only exception is "Head" which had a couple of good songs( The Porpoise Song" and " As We Go along") but otherwise a waste of money. I have an excelllent original A&M Recordd 45 rpm pressing of Boyce and Hart's " I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight", one of my all time favorites. I was a young teen in 7th grade in 1968.
An "infectious..." guitar lick doesn't have to be difficult to play, either. Teaching myself to play back then, Clarksville was the first real 'lick' I learned (if we don't count 'Little Black Egg' or 'Dirty Water').
Anyway, start with a stiff pick, the G 'cowboy' chord, and first whack the fretted 6th string and then the open 3rd string - and then work those open 3rd and 2nd strings over while moving down on the 4th string and... Oh well, you'll figure it out - if it even matters any more.
Boyce and Hart were major players of that era. Great interview by the way - and thank you Joe.

I got to hear Boyce and Hart in Glendora, California, in about 1966. I was going to college at Azusa Pacific College. There was a Catholic girl's school right next to the Azusa hillside campus. This school, St. Lucy's Priory, had a benefit concert every year with bands from the L. A. area. The year before I heard about it, they had the Watts 103rd St. Rhythm Band, Pacific Gas and Electric, and Steppenwolf! The next year, when I heard about it they had Jim and Jean, hippie folk singers, We Five who did the song "You Were on my Mind," and Boyce and Hart. Boyce and Hart who were working with a movement called L. U. V. - "Let Us Vote," just before they made it legal for eighteen year olds to vote. Boyce and Hart sang several songs that later showed up on Monkees albums. They also had as an accompanist a guitarist, Louie Shelton, who wrote the opening riff for "Last Train to Clarksville." Cool show, and a delightful display of pop music. I've never forgotten it, or Boyce and Hart. They were good!

Louie is a good friend.. I’ve got a interview with Louie too we will put out soon. Long story short I wrote a few country songs from the late 70’s thru mid 90’s. I wanted to be a rock star hundred and twenty pounds ago:) but ended up writing country and having a few guitar shops in middle Tennessee and Kentucky. Apparently, not a lot of people know that Tommy and Bobby composed the theme to the NBC soap "Days Of Our Lives."
The intro guitar on Last Train is the first thing I hear when I think about that song, no matter how much I practiced, I just couldn't get it, great work.
Louie told me he already had it when they did that session. It just happened to be perfect. I think he said Day Tripper was the inspiration for him creating it. Thanks for watching....Joe

People wrote songs about a boy and a girl or vice versa no romantic lyrics any thing like that.i grow up in the 70’s the music was great groups would play thair own instruments 🎸🥁 thanks to you for the great music you produce.as thay say in the 60’s you’re a groovy person.✌️☮️
I thought Boyce and Hart were the best kept secret of the 60s. Everybody knew their sound and their songs, but only the musicphiles knew about them. They were in the middle of the 60s sound.

In some cases I wish the internet was available in the 60s like it is now. I guess it would have broke too many hearts if the teenyboppers had known their 'band members' were just faking it when it came to play instruments. I have known for sometime about Louie Shelton's amazing guitar licks. I was beginning to learn how to play guitar then. They sold tons of knock-off arrangements(sheet-music) that I would muddle through. As my guitar knowledge grew and my playing by ear skills improved I would eventually find the right key the song was recorded in. I still was not able to discern until much later that there was 3 different guitar parts for Last Train to Clarksville. I had thought it was just a story but it was a story of a young man about ready to be shipped out to Vietnam.
So many legendary songwriters wrote songs for the Monkees. That is one of the knocks against their HOF induction. But a lot of 60s hits were covers. But The Mokee's hands were tied with Don in charge. I can understand using Studio musicians for recording on.
Finally I noticed The musicians playing songs on shows in the 60s. Most of the guitars were not hooked up to amps.
