Physical awkwardness, yes. I do a half t-rex, with my left hand, mostly because I am predominantly right handed. The uncomfortable way in which I hold myself is so evident in photos/video that I can barely stand to see myself....and R.E.M...and everything else except arriving extremely early; I am more often than not late for work. I don't like mornings and drag my feet...I also struggle with transitions - having to leave my house to get somewhere, etc. can be REALLY stressful for me...thanks again for this channel, Lizzie!
I never thought I was Autistic until my cousin who has been diagnosed told me that I'm Autistic. So I studied the idea and lots of research happened and so did many Autism quizzes. Just a few months ago I decided that it was unavoidable.
I'm not sure if they have the option in the UK, but in the States, we have curbside. So basically you place the order online. You pick a day and time that you want to go to retrieve the merchandise/groceries. Once you arrive you park in the designated area. When the attendant comes by they place the items in the trunk of the car. It makes life so much better less stress/overstimulation. We have 1 particular store called Walmart during 7-8 a.m. It is reserved for people who have sensory issues to shop without stress.
That's a great idea. I'm not sure if we have a similar scheme in the UK. Thankfully my partner enjoys food shopping, so he does it all and I'll sometimes tag along if it's late in the evening and quiet.
Thank you for making these two videos. I can relate to most of the points wholeheartedly. Makes me want to tell my husband to watch them so he can appreciate that it isn't just me! I am 60, diagnosed last year and the more I learn the more I wonder how I managed to get this far in life.
I’m glad to know you can relate - and yes, the more I find out, the more I wonder how this was never picked up by anyone. I guess it demonstrates a societal misunderstanding of what autism is and how it can present differently in people. 🧡
If I go shopping to more than 2-3 stores, it can take me up to two days to fully recover, and I’m absolutely miserable in the process. I also battle fatigue, and learned in a podcast that many autistic people have their REM sleep interrupted - so I’m going to try looking into that more.
I think it's fascinating how so many of us do it. I've (sadly) trained myself out of it as my friend thought it was really odd. Perhaps I should train myself to use t-rex arms again!
Yep, fully relatable from one to ten. As a kid I was always able to deflect attention away from my challenges by virtue of high intelligence; even I came to accept that I was simply an eccentric and hypersensitive creative person and the world just happened to be dumb, insensitive, and tedious. Granted I still feel that way but I also feel like late diagnosis has qualified me for a "bonus stage" of life, in which I can fully assert and integrate those qualities that I now know are autistic. Life is still tiresome but it's more fully my own.
Have you tried yak wool? Gorgeous, love it. But wool in general doesn't bother me like polyester or loopy microfiber do. I've just always worn a cotton layer underneath, not directly on the skin, which is what I was taught everyone did But on the microfiber front... If it is the really high quality knit without loops, it is so good. Good microfiber is good. bad microfiber, which most of it is, is horrific. fabric-wise I am loving the linen revolution as of late. I recently bought a hemp fiber shirt. At first I thought it was not going well... very stiff. But it broke in very quickly. Probably would be no problem from the start if I had a dryer. I hate polo shirts. But I love a button down with a collar. So not sure if that is sensory or "moral." Are you a t-shirt or a button down? Make up your damned mind shirt. You are marginally better than a corporate guy wearing the swag t-shirt over the button down, but not much. Button down with rolled up sleeves and jeans? good biz-casual mix. Polo? ew. gross. (Also, I respect anyone who disagrees with me. Wear whatever, it's cool.)
I can empathize with most or all of what you name here in some form. Let me pick out sensitivity to touch though. I'm not in all cases averse to it, but *light* touch that comes *unexpected* can be very ... ugh. Someone touching me ever so lightly at the shoulder because they want to pass me. Some piece of fabric moved by the wind accidentally touching one of my calves. Someone standing next to me breathing against my arm.
I have also problem with travel and speed, never heard anyone else metion this problem! Whenever I go on a car going, sitting beside while we go on a highway full of cars I get really nervous and distressed. My response to a sudden break or anything unexpected is to take my hands over my ears/face😅. I try to not and are really embarrassed over it but I just cant do otherwise.. And needless to say, I hate rollercoasters as well..
Hi Lizzie, Curious question, you use LinkedIn? I ask because employers are starting to research and it would be nice to share your content and connect. The name I use on TH-cam is my computer game tag name, maybe created from my personality.
I don't, sadly. I've always found it a really difficult platform to use. Plus I only really like to use pseudonyms online and I think it requires an actual name? (if I recall correctly!) Thanks for the suggestion though 🧡
I never did the t-rex arms, I would always cross my arms (there are many pictures of me as a child with my arms crossed). When I was told not to I then ran into the dilemma of "well what do I do with these things, just let them flap around?" Can you explain why perimenopause has caused more issues. Correction, I do do t-rex arms. 🤣 While I was out and about I realized I do it but I "disguise" it by fiddling with my shirt, jewelry, or purse strap.
I've trained myself out of t-rex arms as my friend said it was weird, but I'm going to encourage myself to do them again as I found the arm positioning really comfortable 🧡
@@CreativeAutistic Right? I don't get why it's anyone's business what we do with our limbs. Yeah I remember doing the t-rex arm thing when I was a child in school, when (this is the early 80s) a boy came up to me like "Are you gay? Why are your arms like that?" That's when I started crossing my arms.
Yes i can relate to a lot of what you have said in the video lizzie👍. One thing you mentioned about people putting their hands on you. iv'e had three separate incidents of men grabbing at me and putting their hands on me. One in a library. Two, a pub landlord who tricked me in to going up to the flat above the pub with him and the third was at the local cricket ground believe it or not. These things stick in your mind . I mean if it had happend just the once then it would have been less confusing i suppose🙋♂️
I love your video. Going back to the chap that massages your shoulders. You have every right to respond the way you did. In America it's called sexual harassment he did not get your permission, and he invaded your personal space. OMG flip flop I do not like it I like at all, I rather wear socks than flip-flops
If you've not yet seen it, Part 1 is available at th-cam.com/video/0Dua8hQgA-s/w-d-xo.html 🧡

Aww, so glad you can relate to so many things here, Linda. It really helps in terms of my own imposter syndrome tbh - and yes, transitions! Ugh! 😩🧡

@@CreativeAutistic 😍😍😍😍. I found out that I have Autism. You might have received comments under late diagnosed Autism which is me. I love your videos.
@@DuchessArtisanCreations Congrats on your diagnosis! I hope it helps you to slowly reframe things going forward (I'm sure it will) 🧡

I’m so glad I watched this because now I know we share a love for Neutral Milk Hotel and you’ve earned extra cool points in my book.
Ha! I absolutely love them - nice to meet another fan! 😁🧡
Wow 😮I totally relate to every single point...am waiting for my autism assessment. I'm 52..I really want to be able to put my life into context.
All the very best with your assessment - I'd love to hear how you get on 🧡

I did (still do?) the t-rex arms as a teenager. (Now in 50s). I remember thinking it was weird even then but couldn’t seem to stop it.

few things ruin my day faster than touching wool
