I don’t know how I found your channel because I’m a 30 y/o woman who has never been fishing before. However, your content has proven to be something inconsistently enjoy and find myself inspired by. I can’t wait til I can take trips like this and try fishing in such a beautiful environment.
I don't go fishing and I've been watching his videos for years. Watch his video when he's making crab cakes 😅 🎉 Or watch his recent eel video. That was very surprising and superbly efficient!
Yeah, I've never gone fishing too but i love this guy's joy when he catches something, and even when he doesn't catch anything his love for nature and the outdoors make me feel good on the inside.. And he seems to be a freaking awesome chef so, ya, that's a 2 for 1 !!!
Taku, your patience and persistence paid off. Congratulations on a trout you will remember the rest of your life. You have joy and contentment in your heart, and it is wonderful to behold.
Well done bro🎉. Some locals have fished the canals for years and still haven't caught anything. Hats off to you my friend. Love the aotearoa (aka new Zealand) fishing videos. Keep up the good work 👏
Wow! Here in San Diego we have wind so not fishing today, having coffee and just watched your sister Mitsuki with a beach cleanup and fishing and then seeing your latest OCL pop up and what a show this is. Taku, Jocelyn, this is one of the best shows I have ever seen. Following your trip has been a joy and to see the both of you work so hard and pull off this fish is just amazing. I can feel and see the passion/emotion in Jocelyn and you after you landed that trout. What a feeling that is and you were able to bring that feeling out on this day. Great job! We wish you all the best. Danny and Kim, San Diego, CA.
Kia Ora Taku, Thankyou for returning the Big boy back, he'll definately help share the fishing love to many more little ones by reproducing great specimens. Enjoy your time here bro, it's a pretty amazing bit of rock 👍🏽
I've watched your channel for a longtime now. I'm not much of a saltwater guy but I am an avid trout fisherman who fishes in California and you just caught my dream fish,. Love it. If you fish trout, than New Zealand trout fishing is definitly on your dream list of places to catch the biggest trout in your entire life. Well done!
taku have you ever thought to do a bow hunt and cook? New Zealand is a hunters paradise. it has so many delicious animals to hunt from all over the world. I love bow hunting. it is a pure primal experience. i think you would love to watch the animal get so close before you decide to take its life to sustain your own. it takes a lot of discipline patience and practice to hit your mark with a bow. for me it is always a spiritual experience to take an animal's life and sustain my life from its flesh. wild meat is the best. i have a freezer full of deer meat. i love having the power to decide when and how to take its life to prolong my own. i process my deer myself. I taught myself.
aaahhh!!! wow!!! that was 4 days of some crazy, amazing, epic, fishing. congratulations catching the big beautiful rainbow trout! it truly was a big trout!!! and love that jocelyn is such a good luck charm for ye!!! waaay cool! 🕊
Congrats Taku, what a nice trout of a lifetime at a place that only one goes in a lifetime. Those Lamb chops looked really good cant lie, can't wait for yoy guys come back California bay area and start kicking out some halibut and rockfish videos. As always best of luck to you guys,
New Zealand Chef here. If I can give you advice with cooking lamb, use a unsalted butter with a neutral oil while searing, then cover on a medium to low heat for 5 minutes to start the fat rendering process, then after 5 minutes cook until all sides are caramelised. Obviously in a kitchen an oven will speed this up, but I've found the method I've mentioned works well in a camping environment
I was just fishing there the other day too! Glad that you managed to catch a monster trout! Will be fishing there more often to try and catch a monster trout too.
i love watching all your adventures. my line of choice is Ande 6 lb tournament green mono. i fish the lake erie tributaries for steelhead every year and my PB is a 9.6 lb rainbow trout. there's no better feeling than having that fish on your line and trying to get them in. when you set the hook you gotta relax and take your time. it is worth the wait. the rollercoaster of emotions during the fight is real. it is the best adrenaline rush ever to get them in and in the net. i also released my biggest trout. it feels good to catch the biggest fish of your life and release them and watch them swim away.
for a minute, I thought it was like the California drought. Somehow you pull through for all of us in California. You save California. You are a hero in the wind.❤❤❤❤❤
🌴 well it looks like you’ve made it , the van is fixed and the next adventure is on , catching rainbows ain’t easy , especially on a fly rod , but I to use to drift salmon eggs that were in fine netting , and used mepp’s spinners on spinning gear , I’d up the line to 8 lb test , so happy for ya on that beautiful rainbow it’s a memory you’ll never forget, and then there was those lamb lollipops my mom use to make em she would use mint vinegar or mint jelly on them 😮oh so good ! Another great vid guys , have fun stay safe , oh and watch out for them dam hobbits 😄👍🏼
The canals are on my bucket list. I have a plan to try float/bobber fishing, so was stoked to see you give it a go! I think it could work with some refinement. Glad you got your fish, you deserve it!
Night fishing is where its at bro!! Glow in the dark eggs or spinners catch the monsters!😆🙌🏽 Absolutely love these series bro. I am still waiting for the day I see your van drive pass me! HUGE FAN!!! ❤
Congrats! A bit of advice someone that taught me on drift fishing to help you out (egg rolling) Shorten your leader, and have about a two inch gap between your egg and hook. Again congratulations, thanks for sharing!
I’m an old man and from when I was little, I have been taught to set your drag and leave it alone. A properly set drag for your line test will work well.
Hello Taku, this is such a weird topography / looks not almost unfriendly for fishing...so happy for the fish you landed, a monster!!!, and love your cooking influence always! i wish i was there! Thank you Taku
That was a hog of a Rainbow! Well done, another one to check off the bucket list! Glad Jocelyn was there to help and be the lucky charm! Keep living the dream you two!
Not too sure what you got done in a tough 4 days of fishing . . . with a Lamb dinner . 😉 Would have loved to see a trout marinated and grilled. Maybe the next time. Great catch. Big 👍 to you for releasing it.
that is crazy the rainbow trout in NZ get THAT big and have the bent snout like a salmon does in the US. I know they are in the same family but wow that is cool, i bet they taste amazing too.
That canal he is fishing is the only place in NZ where they get that big because of the salmon farms, the pellets they feed the salmons overflow into the canel. Rest of rivers and lakes here have normal size rainbows.
The agony of learning how to fish, is not really felt all that much at the time of learning, but it is fun to watch for those who that know how to fish.
Glad you cleaned your hand immediately. I thought you were going to continue fishing like that. Actually, i dont think ive seen you get injured before. Ill continue watching the video 👍
The biggest bow I've ever caught was 5 lbs. in North Carolina lmao of all places...and I m originally from the North Island of Aotearoa. Ngatii Maniapoto/Waikato and Ngati Ranginui/BOP. Nice catch! Looks like a Columbia River Steelhead!
I'm a cook that likes to fish and I hope you do more recipes with ingredients unique to where you visit. Technically its still a catch and cook you just didn't cook what you caught. Keep living it up for the rest of us and thanks for sharing.
That was a dang good fish Taku! Being a fisherman myself i know the exact feeling you had from trying so hard to catch one (especially 4 days in a row) then when you do you happen to lose it.. it was very intense to watch and i had nothing but hope for you to catch that one you were looking for and im happy you did 😭 Also the relationship and support you have from jocelyn is beautiful! Nothing better than your significant other giving you genuine support in what you love to do!
It’s important you keep your hands wet and the fish Mobile. Trout are such finicky fish. Great job on your patience catching the fish and then for you to Taku a biggie and then release the beast back to make bigger ones? C’mon. There’s no challenge to this channel as far as other creators. Taku has found a way to dominate the culinary outdoors and our hearts at the same time. We all love the both of you. We’re all overjoyed at your willingness to stay true and do what YOU want to do. Love. Love. Love. ❤️ ❤❤ P.S. Jocelyn, snag a bit more screen time. I watch Taklyn the World and the feature is you. You have a way with silly explanations that all of can relate to when it comes to telling our family whatever weird stuff we made lol. Jocelyn, we all thank you for keeping him motivated. Not all days are good and he has you. Thanks for loving him enough to feel he’s always able to give us something. Means more to alot of us than you realize.
Fished those canals for years. Never had much luck however saw an old fisherman who regularly caught monster trout and salmon. Asked him what his secret was - he used cigarette filters on the lure! Mimicked the pellets the salmon fisheries used in canals. Not sure if that’s legal or not but you have to appreciate his ingenuity.
I don’t know how I found your channel because I’m a 30 y/o woman who has never been fishing before. However, your content has proven to be something inconsistently enjoy and find myself inspired by. I can’t wait til I can take trips like this and try fishing in such a beautiful environment.

I'm vegetarian and love this content..so inspiring and amazing chef!!
I don't go fishing and I've been watching his videos for years. Watch his video when he's making crab cakes 😅 🎉

Great you’ve got to experience this world class fishery Taku! Did you also get on to the salmon there?
The canals are on my bucket list. I have a plan to try float/bobber fishing, so was stoked to see you give it a go! I think it could work with some refinement. Glad you got your fish, you deserve it!
You had your drag to tight and when he went to take off pulled hooks unlucky but you still got an amazing fish
That fish was flying in that clear water❤

Thanks for sharing your awesome trip with us. Made for great content. Congrats on that epic fish
My wife lost a giant rainbow once because she only brought a small trout net. She still talks about it like it was yesterday.
Leif would love some of that trout!
Now that was a proper Rainbow Trout and you earned it
Big rainbows, big browns, big tench and rudd and massive perch. Every American course fishermans dream

Well done Taku! Great angling! Not an easy thing to do but I'm not surprised you finally got one. No fun if it's too easy ;)

A bit of advice someone that taught me on drift fishing to help you out (egg rolling)
Shorten your leader, and have about a two inch gap between your egg and hook.
Again congratulations, thanks for sharing!
Rainbow trout is one my favorite. I've never seen one that big before
