      Does donating plasma have any beneficial effects like reducing iron? Or only blood donations?

    Thanks, Richard, for pointing out this important aspect to ageing. Too much Iron does increase ageing as I have a genetic mutation which prevents me controlling iron (called Hemochromatosis). It's interesting because this genetic fault is a special case of something which affects everyone to varying degrees. PD is knowledgeable on this but his description of the reason why everyone is at risk of getting too much iron was not 100% accurate. The reasons are in part to the addition of iron to flour and breakfast cereals and Denmark has indeed banned this with an improvement. The reason why iron addition to food is different from the natural iron in food is because they use pure iron (which is actually unnatural as its a form that cannot exist in nature). Pure iron is highly reactive and although for many people it reacts with stomach acid before being absorbed as a less toxic version for many others it can go through the stomach wall because of other conditions such as IBS, gluten intolerance, ulcers and lactose intolerance - it then causes havoc when inside the body. Also a common reason for additional iron absorption is alcohol as this increases absorption. And of course iron supplements in say multi-vitamins can also cause uncontrolled absorption of iron. Of course a separate reason is the genetic condition I have which officially affects 1 in 200 Northern Europeans but because of other genetic mutations it actually does affect 1 in 100 (but to varying strength and therefore age at which the accumulation causes damage).

    I came to the same conclusion regarding body mass loss and the subsequent rise in ferritin plasma levels. I have managed to slim down to 82 kg from 120kg (keto, OMAD + swimming) within a few years, and ferritin levels were steadily rising to the 1.5x upper normal border level. I went to the Hematology clinic, and was told to do a genetic test, and not do any intervention in the next 6 months. I have replied that I do not fancy the idea of being a part of a clinical study control arm, particularly without explicitly being asked if I want to, and scheduled a blood donation immediately.

    I have hereditary hemochromatosis, which makes me prone to iron overload. There are many ways to block the absorption of iron not outlined here, beyond phlebotomy. Black tea blocks iron uptake, phytates, calcium, etc., also block the uptake. Quercitin blocks the uptake and chelates iron, and taking magnesium alongside other therapies helps as well. There are several other good options as well. My ferritin started at 1600 when my doc discovered the HH, and is now down to a lovely 28.5. I’m averaging just one therapeutic phlebotomy every 9 months. My other iron markers are now in the normal range as well. If this approach helps someone like me, with a gene that causes my body to absorb excess iron, they can certainly help a regular person. Anemia is a separate issue from iron uptake. Anemia means your body is not properly using the iron that you take in. Iron overload means your body absorbs too much iron. You can have iron overload at the same time as being anemic.

    if the established "healthy ferritin range" does not reflect actual health, then imagine how many other RDAs and metrics are skewed ...

    From what u are saying that human (male especially) being unable to get rid of iron. It would seem human are not designed to eat a lot of red meat which contained a lot of heme iron which would be absorbed even if we got adequate iron level. Unlike plant iron which would not get absorbed if we have adequate iron already.

    Do you think that a "power red" ( which whole blood goes into a machine that separates out the red cells and returns the other blood components (platelets, plasma and white cells) back to the donor along with hydrating saline solution) blood donation would be the most effective in removing iron?

      Hi Jerry, thanks for the question. It certainly make sense that this would be one of the best ways to reduce iron, given that red blood cells are main store of iron in the body (about 70%).

    I heard you can reduce iron in the blood by consuming Phytic acid on an empty stomach, so that it can get absorbed into the blood without having bound to minerals first. It would then chelate iron and help excrete it. Similar effect with flavonoides. The effects are said to be similar to EDTA. Just a myth or worth considering more?

      Hi Prinz, thanks for sharing. I am not aware of this effect of phytic acid, I did a bit of research and it would seem to reduce iron absorption but not sure whether it would reduce existing iron levels.

    So poor metabolic health prevents proper iron regulation? It's scary that 88% of people have poor metabolic health.

    So … we can’t get rid of iron but we can with chelation? And would that be with turmeric or curcumin?

    Is there a difference between donating just plasma or whole? Does just donating plasma create an imbalance? I knew someone who gave monthly plasma and felt it lowered their overall health.
