Hi Renata, the Normans weren’t really French. Their name comes from “Norsemen” as they came from Denmark, Iceland and Norway. They settle on the French coast in the tenth century. William the Bastard and Edward the Confessor were first cousins once removed hence Williams claim to the English throne.
Did you also know that castle winding staircases were always built to wind right not left because most people are right handed and its easier to use a sword coming down than using one going up because the inner wall would be in the way going up....
The Normans were originally Vikings who settled on the coast of France. From that location, they would launch raids on English settlements. The English would end their prayers with "Lord keep us from the wrath of the Northmen"
The Tower of London is a royal palace and fortress rather than a castle and prison. Was never designed to be a prison and is still to this day a palace and fortress.
At 5mins 43seconds a pop up appears on screen informing of why the Yeoman wardens are nicknamed Beefeaters. This is not true as true reason for this nickname us unknown.
No the Normans conquered England. Yes the Normans lived in France and certainly spoke french but they were Normans. The Normans conquered Normandy and then the french king who couldn’t stop them then agreed to allow them to keep Normandy. Norman literally means North man. These North men were Scandinavian or Nordic and were originally vikings before settling.
After the Romans withdrew, Celts from Britain moved into the area to seek refuge from the Anglo-Saxon invaders of the 5th and 6th centuries. It is from this event that Brittany derives its name. Over the next 300 years the Celts were converted to Christianity by missionaries from the British Isles.
