The Partitas, BWV 825-830, are a set of six harpsichord suites written by Johann Sebastian Bach, published from 1726 to 1730 as Clavier-Übung I, and the first of his works to be published under his direction. They were, however, among the last of his keyboard suites to be composed, the others being the six English Suites, BWV 806-811 and the six French Suites, BWV 812-817. The six partitas for keyboard are the last set of suites that Bach composed and the most technically demanding of the three. They were composed between 1725 and 1730 or 1731. As with the French and English Suites, the autograph manuscript of the Partitas is no longer extant. In keeping with a nineteenth-century naming tradition that labelled Bach's first set of Suites English and the second French, the Partitas are sometimes referred to as the German Suites.[1] This title, however, is a publishing convenience; there is nothing particularly German about the Partitas. In comparison with the two earlier sets of suites, the Partitas are by far the most free-ranging in terms of structure. Unlike the English Suites, for example, wherein each opens with a strict prelude, the Partitas feature a number of different opening styles including an ornamental Overture and a Toccata.
Johann Sebastian Bach hat im Laufe seines Lebens eine Anzahl seiner Werke für Cembalo oder Orgel im Druck veröffentlicht; in den Jahren von 1731 bis 1741 in einer vierteiligen Sammlung unter dem Namen Clavierübung. Er bedachte hier systematisch alle Instrumente mit Klaviatur: ein- oder zweimanualiges Cembalo oder auch Clavichord im ersten Teil, Orgel mit und ohne Pedal im dritten Teil und zweimanualiges Cembalo im zweiten und vierten Teil. Mit Suite, Konzert, Präludium und Fuge, Choralbearbeitung und Variation bot Bach hier die meisten der gängigen Gattungen und Kompositionsstile. Auch wenn der Titel „Übung“ heute ein Lehrwerk assoziiert, waren und sind die Kompositionen alles andere als leicht zu spielen und richteten sich keineswegs an Instrumentalschüler. Vielmehr zeigen sie ganz systematisch das kompromisslos hohe kompositorische und spieltechnische Niveau ihres Autors. Das Wort „Übung“ muss hier also nicht im heutigen Sinne des beim Etüdenspiel im Vordergrund stehenden neuen Erlernens verstanden werden, sondern kann vielmehr im höheren Sinn als umfassende geistige und technische Aneignung, Vertiefung und Meditation des Spielers einerseits, als Aus-Übung des Tonsetzerberufs andererseits gesehen werden. Letzterem entspricht der Begriff der Askese, der seit der Antike als eine Übungspraxis im Rahmen von Selbstschulung durch Disziplinierung sowohl hinsichtlich des Denkens und Wollens als auch hinsichtlich des Verhaltens bezeichnet wird. -----------

Schiff gives a stunning performance of this complex Partita (aren't they all!); which very much resembles a gorgeous comet streaking, with beauteous fire, from beyond and through the darkening Universe. A sure predictor of Light which is not only to come; 'tis tangible now in these seemingly hopeless, despairing days.
Schiff plays brilliantly with an ease and fluidity made possible by expansive technique which is not a showy feature. As with all brilliant musicians, a far-reaching, flawless and exacting technique is but one tool in preparation of giving the listener the performer's insight and heartfelt understanding of notes passed down through years. I first experienced Schiff's outstanding musicianship by way of Debussy and Ravel on the radio. Heavenly!! Schiff took my ear/hand and showed me complex forms and outstanding beauty of the compositions written for solo piano by Ravel and Debussy. Not only transformed my experience of their genius but has given me the courage to think about purchasing sheet music. Schiff has a deep and wonderful musicianship. He unifies the Partita with incredible nuancing of musical phrases and an underlying forward motion, felt but not obtrusive. His added ornamentation, particularly in the bass, brings me joy, joy, joy!! What a celebration the past hour has been!! Bravo!!! Thank you, David!
Lebhafte und wunderschöne Interpretation dieser perfekt komponierten Tastensuite im veränderlichen Tempo mit klar artikuliertem doch warmhezigem Klang des technisch fehlerlosen Klaviers und mit angenehmer Dynamik. Wahrlich intelligenter und talentierter Pianist!
