    Leviticus 25:46
"You can pass them on to your children as inheritance that they can own as permanent property. You can make these people work as slaves, but you must not rule harshly over your own people, the Israelites."
Based on this, 'not ruthlessly' is not required for foreigners

"Ruthless" equates to not killing them when you beat them -- within three days after you beat them

It always amuses me that we usually know their bible better than they do.

"Ruthlessly"? Really? Owning a human being is owning a human being, whether you beat them or not. It is immoral to own another human being. It does't matter if it is "ruthless" or not. Sheesh.

I love his fallback position is owning people forever is endorsed by the bible, provided you aren't "ruthless" about it. So long as you show pity at least once you haven't been ruthless.
So if Joe's slave doesn't clean the floor to his satisfaction it's okay to beat them, provided they don't actually die right away it is okay (Exodus 21:20-21).
And Joe's slaves had better do what he tells them to do (Ephesians 6:5).
And Joe is arguing for contextually constrained, not absolute morality.

And it does say slavery is allowed for life

So I guess he wouldn't mind being a slave as long as he wasn't treated ruthlessly!!!

levitivcus 25 44 ‘Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. 45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. 46 You can will them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly. i guess for life back then was the 7 years he was talking about.

I think they misread the "ruthless" part.
Lev 25:46 You can will them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.
It said you cannot rule your fellow Israelites ruthlessly but for others, you can slave them for life.

When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property. (Exodus 21:20-21 NAB)
    Sounds pretty ruthless to me.

It says not ruthlessly then outlines the beating rules and what that means. Joe has given up his humanity to be a slave to a book. That is sad.

This gets so redundant after a while . . . why can't ppl just admit that the OT laws were written specifically for the Jewish people alone? The "10 commandments" were for them only - "Thou shalt not murder" - meant you shouldn't kill your fellow Jew - foreigners were open season . . . there was 2 different types of servitude as well - one for your fellow Jew and one for foreigners . . .

Leviticus 25:44-46 [New International Version (NIV)]
44 “‘Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. 45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. 46 You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.

What about the fact that women or concubines could be forced to bare children for their masters? And an owner could beat a slave as long as he didn't kill him right away.... Not ruthless???? I beg to differ....

Another justification that slavery is not actually condoned by the Bible is that slavery was a reality at the time, so rules were put in place to describe how slaves should be treated. ie its not really saying that slavery is acceptable, just how slaves should be treated while it was going on.
Cos, you know, the Bible doesn't take up positions about what is acceptable or not. You couldn't expect the Bible to, oh I don't know, condemn slave ownership as "abominable", say. That would be too far.

Now listen, Son. After I pass Larry here on to you as personal property I want you to remember never to beat him so hard that he dies on the _same day_ : Exodus 20:21
We don't want to be *ruthless* after all.

Missed up on that one fsx 23 cause in the bible it specifically says and permits that you can beat your slaves as long as they don't die within a couple days, not happy friendly nice slavery as they claim, even Jesus approves this.
Luke 12:47 Jesus okays and endorses beating slaves.’
you can look it up I think its somewhere in Leviticus, says that you can beat your slaves as long as they don't die within a couple days, I don't have the exact verse remembered but I can look it up.

Joe is either terrible at reading comprehension or a liar. It specifically says not to rule over fellow Israelites ruthlessly. It sounds like he said he has the ESV.
"46 You may bequeath them to your sons after you to inherit as a possession forever. You may make slaves of them, but over your brothers THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL you shall not rule, one over another ruthlessly."
Full context can be read from LEV 25:39 to :46. Clearly a difference between Israelite slaves and slaves from other nations.
