I finally own this PCB after many years of searching. It looks amazing in my arcade cab. I have the Dungeon Magic version, so I was able to turn on red blood and other effects in the settings. It was worth the wait!
I never played Dungeon Magic, or Wizard Fire, or its sequel ... I'm actually kind of amazed that they made these isometric fantasy beat-em-ups, because they requires so much more pixel art effort than the more typical beat-em-up (such as Dungeons and Dragons, where you only attack either left or right).
They didn't really do more pixel art for the perspective. At most there's like a slightly different walk animation when walking up vs. down/straight. So basically it's like every other beat-em-up, just with a _harsher_ iso angle than the typical game. Honestly the boss design was way ahead of the typical games of its day, as that snake boss was probably one of the most complex bosses I saw in any arcade when I found this game. (And it was rare to find. I visited maybe 40-60 different arcades growing up and only saw this like 1-2 times total.) The platforming was the worst part, and I wasn't a huge fan of constantly bashing crates/barrels either. The exploration part was interesting, but also frustrating because I seem to remember hitting a dead-end or two and just running out of time and it ate my quarter that way. Granted, that was kid-me (15-16 years old) and I wouldn't have been that great at planning ahead to avoid that sort of thing.
@@Xygor I will have to try to find the game. I have enjoyed your channel. If it wasn't for your channel I would never have known that I could have gotten grandia on steam. I now have it and I am playing it again ☺️👍
I remember 'Dungeon Magic - Sword of the Elements' on NES. Published by Taito. Not the same thing, sadly. Wow, was that game tough before the internet. I just had to brute-force my way through that thing, but I did it. Back before maps online. Back before an explanation of the magic system. Good times.
I’m stunned that you keep finding obscure games like this that I’ve never heard of! And, as a big fan of Knights of the Round, I was happy to see you mention it!
One of the reasons to own a PS2 and play Taito legends 2 for this wonderful game. A very unique game indeed with beautiful graphics and sound. To me, within the arcade action/ rpg genre, this game is slightly out-unique'ed by Gauntlet Legends, because of that awesome password system that let me save my progress in my local arcade early 2000's....
Wow, what a great looking game, This is exactly the type of game I would have loved back in the day. Dug those D&D, Golden Axe, Knights of the Round games. I am going to have to take note when I hook my Pi back up for this one. Thanks for the video.
Never saw a cabinet for this one when I was a kid. Reminds me of some games you'd find on the NeoGeo though. This game looks like a cross between Knights of the Round and Golden Axe.
I was a teenager all through the eighties and nineties (turned 10 in '80). Played a WHOLE lot of arcade games, but never seen that one. Would have played it for sure.
Cool game! It’s released officially on the taito egret 2 mini if you have one and buy the add on games pack that ain’t cheep btw.. It’s also on the taito legends collection on og Xbox and ps2
Thanks for the discovery Sir. It really feels like Crossed Swords x Golden Axe. I definitely will give a it a try, and as you said, as a kid I would have loved it
2:31 So, you're all in a tavern when...Shaggy Rogers approaches you and wants you to help him rescue his dog Scooby and the rest of his Mystery Inc. crew from an evil wizard who has taken them prisoner.
I was confusing this for sure with Dark Seal 2/Wizard Fire; I don't think I've ever heard of this one though! It looks _AWESOME_ - like a Japanese, sprite-based version of Gauntlet Legends, which I love. Definitely going to have to check this out; heck, I probably have it on one of my emulator machines already, lol. Have you ever played Konami's Gaiapolis? That is another arcade fantasy hack-and-slash/looter/beat 'em up/action-RPG thing - it's probably not as good as Wizard Fire or this looks to be, especially since it's not great to emulate (it had a vertically-oriented screen, so it's going to be letterboxed on the sides), but it too has a fantastic fantasy style and _looks_ pretty great at least. I mean, it was Konami and it pretty much right around the time they were doing stuff like Violent Storm and Metamorphic Force in the arcades (SUPER underrated beat 'em ups); I don't think they could make a bad-looking game at the time if they were trying.
*IF YOU want* your game to be never found in the first place, name it with "Magic", "Dungeon", "Dragon", etc. There are a million games that use those words.
@Xygor Gaming Thanks for the coverage man, this was a geniunely great piece and I did in fact try the game last night on MAME. It's damn good fun!! Your writing, footage utilised and audio balance is fantastic. Easy sub.
Ahhh shiznit....I played the hella out of this game......sweet video....but why 6 minutes come on 2 hours....it's the only arcade cab I own....ports where promised by taito but never evolved, there's alot of homebrew u can find but it just reorganizes known assets

Nice, that is dedication! It really is a fun and unique game. I wish there were more arcade games like it.
@@Xygor thanks! Me too. Now I have to get a four player cab one day!
You should upload a vid of the arcade game! Id love to see that.
@@ManiacMcgeee That's a good idea!
They did release this arcade game on ps2 called Tito Legends 2 I think
Didn't realize that!
Wow, this game looks really good for 1994. The sprites are gorgeous!
Yes they are!

Give it a try!

I will eventually cover that one too!
I first came across this in collection for the PS2, over decade ago. It's a great game imo. Definitely underrated.
It really is!
*THE colours are so beautiful.*
Yes, it is not realistic, but I with we would have an Unreal Engine 5 game with ray-tracing done in such palette.

For real! I got Taitio Legends 2 as a gift for myself last year, and I keep coming back to it again and again - so much great variety in games!

This game seems perfect for something like an Evercade physical release. If this ever came to that console, I would consider buying it!
Never played the arcade, but did play it on the Taito Legends 2 compilation. Really cool game. Ash is hard as all hell to use, though.
2:31 So, you're all in a tavern when...Shaggy Rogers approaches you and wants you to help him rescue his dog Scooby and the rest of his Mystery Inc. crew from an evil wizard who has taken them prisoner.
Was at arcades a lot as a kid. I never saw this game. I was always a huge fan of big sprites which this has so I definitely would of played it
How have I not heard of this before thank you for sharing
Give it a try!
Never saw this game in the wild; but definitely would have played it.
It's worth it!
Played this arcade one on a florida vacation trip and never saw ot again lol
This game looks like King of Dragons but way more fleshed out. Super rad !
Looks neat. But the colour choices are not so good. The Elf's green is too garish. But thanks for the recommendation.
This game looks good. Makes me wish they would release this and Gauntlet dark legacy again
Yeah, that would be great! I really wish more games like this would be released.
That snake looks sick
That was a good boss!

Yes, I have also played Gaiapolis and plan to review that one eventually as well.
I wish there were more isometric beat em ups nowadays
It was a unique and fun genre!
Semi Isometric view is pretty unique
Definitely for a game of this kind!
I also never saw this game in the wild but I would have played the hell out of it I'm sure!
that does look amazing
It's really fun!
never played it,
looks like it could rival gauntlet ps1 though !
this looks so cool.
It's a good game!
Grin is just ninja master Gara from the 1992 anime bastard 🤣 or 1988 manga if you prefer. Good video by the way 👏
Thanks, didn't know that!
Never heard of it before... emulation time
Good luck. Last I checked, this game wasn't working properly on emulators. It was slowly improving, but I don't know if it ever became playable.
So it's playable on emulator now?
Yes
@@Xygor sweet
I remember the NES game of the same name. Not fondly. No relation other than the name and publisher. This seems more appealing.

Haha, pretty much!
I guess I'm emulating this game today.
