Ethereal (NZ) is the winner of the Queensland Oaks as a 3 year old, Melbourne Cup - Caulfield Cup double as a 4 year old and also the BMW Stakes. She retired to stud after her BMW win.
Seamer's BMW ride was so patient. He could have stopped her and hooked out earlier but he patiently waited for Universal Prince to make up the ground first and then he was able to ease without losing momentum. Along with Steven Arnold's Sydney Cup win on Gallic the most patient winning ride I've seen.
She gets forgotten she was a staying Champion and im sure Latte who she beat was the mother of Melb Cup winner cant think of the name o yeah Brew. Not a bad bunch of Kiwis in that race. Would have loved to have seen her come back for a Cox Plate. But what a staying mare she was. She just knew where the line was.
All her wins in Aussie were awesome but for me here late withering finishes at Qld where she finished so fast the commentator gave her two names.It went from a Pommy accent one then back to his normal ocker twang of Ethereal instead of his Etthherreal.The BMW win was one of real talk as the Aussie Scribes were sprucing up their champ Universal Prince who was a controversial late scratching in the Melbourne cup.As the BMW showed it was thank you ball boys thank you linesman and thank you to the ladies in the kitchen for putting on a top feed as the real champ Ethereal bowed out in style.I would have loved to see Ethereal take on the mighty Winx.The finishing bursts of those two champs would have been electric.
I remember Scott Seamer being interviewed after one of the race's and he grinned and said I might have to become a NZder,that made me smile,😊
Very tough, brave mare. What a Spring she and Scott Seamer had in 2001. Trained by the lovely, modest Sheila Laxon.

By the time Winx started racing, Ethereal would have been in her 20's. She was too old to be racing, she had been retired for many years by then!!
