    While I understand your sentiment regarding an adult Jojo collabing with problematic influencers, I wish you delved deeper into how young she was when she first started associating with them and them grooming her to not think twice about the adults’ inappropriate behavior. Of course, she’s still an adult and should know better, but I imagine it’s hard to separate oneself from adults they’ve known since they were young

      Thank you for at least mentioning she is an adult. While I think her childhood had a lot to shape what’s happening now, if I see one more person call a 20 year old “kid”- she’s a young adult and it’s not fair to her to keep speaking and treating her as if she has no capabilities to grow because she was on tv as a child. That’s taking her intelligence for granted and feels patronizing

    • @ft.meganmccarthy8865
      @ft.meganmccarthy8865 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      @@the-postal-dudeMuch of the criteria for NPD revolves around the way they treat others, and while it's totally subjective what makes someone a bad person, everyone with NPD will hurt others. Of course, so will every other person to ever exist lol.
      The conversation around narcissistic abuse is incredibly important in my opinion, as for me personally, learning that the things I experienced fit within a recognized pattern was the biggest breakthrough in my healing from childhood/adolescent trauma.
      Unfortunately, the diagnosis isn't often helpful to the patient, and some experts question whether it's even a useful diagnosis because "subjective distress" isn't something that many people who fit the criteria would be able to acknowledge or admit - even to themselves, since the disorder itself is based around manipulation of their own self image. On top of that, the amount of effort it would take to override their natural thoughts and behavior every day, possibly for the rest of their life, would be beyond exhausting. I feel awful for people with NPD, because they didn't ask to turn out that way, and they are miserable deep down, but the more we stigmatize the behaviors (not the people,) the less people with NPD we create.
      I'm sorry about the novel lol, I'm not trying to come at you or anything, it's just one of my favorite topics to discuss. I really like Dr. Ramani's videos if you're interested too.

    Jojo is in a uniquely rare position where everything she does looks good because she never sticks around to look bad; a smart move on her part. She looks like she’s doing charity work when she visits these other TH-camrs (which she basically is). Even in her collab with James Charles she didn’t spend the day with him then went out and bought coffees for a while store, some grocery store food and a gift for James. It makes her look so good by comparison. And maybe that’s what it is. Maybe continuing to associate with these people is a way to make herself look great with minimal to no effort. If that’s the case then it’s brilliant because even though she’s gotten a little criticism, I guarantee you no one will put her on any of these other youtubers’ level. Rather they’ll look at her and say, “Yeah, Shane/ James/ Colleen is the worst but wow, Jojo is such a good friend and a good person!” It’s kinda ingenious honestly

    When people have been in the industry practically since infancy, it’s hard to distinguish friend from foe. How would you know what healthy is, if you’re not exposed to it? Having people ignore boundaries (while you struggle to cement them) to the point that they become fluid, would feel, normal!

    • @queerbotanicalqueen
      @queerbotanicalqueen ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Correct. And that is where I take issue with people coming after Jojo. I’m not saying she’s amazing or perfect or that she hasn’t messed up. But for the majority of these collars she was a literal child or at least a teenager. She literally became an adult 2 years ago. When you have grown up in this kind of system, when you have lived this kind of life since you were a child, when your most developmental stages took place in this chaos and manipulation… you don’t see the red flags! You don’t understand how bad it is, because you have known these people since childhood. Your brain doesn’t want to recognize that your whole life, you have been lied to and exploited. Let’s not forget, she was exploited as a child. She was put on TV at the mere age of nine and had her life broadcast to the world in a reality show, where she would be emotionally and verbally abused. Her mom put her in situations where she was working too long. I also wouldn’t be surprised if her mother pocketed the money. On top of that, she wasn’t allowed to develop or make big mistakes as a teen, because she had to be a “role model” and put on a heavily monitored, crafted persona so that she could make (her exploiters) money. She probably missed a number of developmental milestones because of how she was treated and forced into this role model position for kids. Even then, parents criticized her for not being a good enough role model, when she was trying to be perfect. I’m not saying it’s ok for her to collab with these TH-camrs or give them relevance, but we also have to recognize these are people she has known since she was a kid and that she was most likely a victim of them too. Also, she wasn’t exactly protected from hate, especially online. She was a literal child who was reading and listening to constant complaints, threats, and critiques towards her for the smallest, most innocent things. Her appearance was criticized and picked apart by trolls. That takes a toll on a child and she probably recognizes she didn’t deserve that. I wouldn’t be surprised if she thinks that that is what’s happening to her TH-cam “friends” and feels like she’d be participating in hurting others if she criticized them. Not to mention, even if she wants to, her PR team probably wouldn’t allow it unless they are sure it will reflect positively on her. In the end, blame the system, not the people who were raised in it.

    Jojo doing a video with Miranda Sings a couple of years ago is how my daughter found out about Miranda Sings and I had to put a stop to that shit with a quickness. My daughter is seven and she's been obsessed with JoJo since she was around 3. In terms of people my kid watches on a loop, I've always thought JoJo was alright (which is good because now my four year old niece is also obsessed with JoJo so it seems like this family will be hearing JoJo's awful music for many years to come) and JoJo is also how my kid found out who James Charles was (I still have to argue with her something like 3 years later about why she can't watch that asshole). So do I wish JoJo didn't have such assholes for friends? Yeah. But do I get that originally she was probably just stuck doing videos with these people by her team and may have friendships with them now? I would assume that's the case. I still think of her as a kid but she's grown now and she has lived the overwhelming majority of her life doing what everyone wanted her to do so now that she's coming into her own, if she does something I don't want my kid to watch, I'll just have her skip that video.
    I love that sweatshirt she gave Shane. I could only imagine my child's reaction if I got that. lmao Besides, it would be false advertisement. I'm not quite as gay as JoJo. 😂

    Jojo is just the internet version of a child movie/tv star. (Yes, she was on traditional media too but most of the stars we associate with the trend were still up and coming before internet stardom really hit, and were no where near as integrated into internet media as she is) How many of them have we seen crash and burn once they’re an adult because they’ve grown up with cameras in their face, a lack of boundaries, a lack of influences to ground them to reality, really just a lack of influences saying NO?
    Like sure she hasn’t turned to abusing substances and hard partying (yet) like we normally associate with the typical child star burnout but to me this is just a new era. I don’t know how much of her professional online life is managed for her but it seems like she needs someone better. These influencers aren’t your “friends,” these adults in their late 20’s and 30’s are just contributing to the grooming of her. She’s at a pivotal point where I hope she listens to her audience giving her a wake up call after seeing her with all these people recently and has someone in her life who can give her healthy normal life advice.
    I think a lot of people are rooting for her to be successful, to do good, to have a happy and healthy life doing what she loves but she’s really at a point where I think it might all fizzle out or turn really dark if she doesn’t take a moment to reflect and listen to people in her life who actually have her best interests at heart.
    (PS this internet figure isn’t as big but Ashley Gavin, a comedian that blew up on tik tok, is also having her actions addressed right now and Jojo was on her podcast. Just another mid-30’s problematic adult she’s been associated with🙃)
