After recent events it came to my attention that of all the videos I have posted, none have represented the Black community either through film or music.
Black artists have shaped me since i was a child. I grew up listening to Nina Simone, The Ink Spots, Marvin Gaye, Tribe called quest, MF DOOM and so many more incredible artists. I would not have the appreciation for film and music that I have now without the tremendous talent of the Black community.
Thank you for the struggle that these artists have faced and still face, I will do what I can and i urge all those who watch this to show gratitude in any shape or form and help build a society that praises and encourages the black community as this would be a dull world without their light.
Footage from a harrowing story of sorrow and betrayal 'Up Tight! ' 1968
Directed by Jules Dassin.
The film is set in the aftermath of the murder of MLK and is an essential piece of cinema that is hard hitting, relentless and does not get nearly enough attention, that it truly deserves.
A note on the song, Strange Fruit. This cover by Nina Simone, was the first version I had heard of this song when I was a young boy. Later I would realize that the song was first popularized by another phenomenal artist, Billie Holiday. However, i only recently discovered that the lyrics were written by the poet and song writer, Abel Meeropol, A Jewish man from the Bronx. He was Inspired by Lawrence Beitler's photograph of the 1930 lynching of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith in Marion, Indiana.

Man, the faces in this film are incredible
Glad this was my introduction to strange fruit, this rendition with the piano only is so good and Nina Simone's voice is the perfect melancholy storyteller
