How to Build a Barstool for Around $3 Dollars

  • In this video I take inspiration from Ana White (www.ana-white.c...) to build a bar stool. I use one single 2x6 that can be purchased for around $3 and cut it up into all the lumber needed to build this barstool.
    Kreg K5 Pocket Hole Jig - amzn.to/2rOupZr
    Kreg R3 Pocket Hold Jig System (less expensive option) - amzn.to/2EjT6zy

    to all those complaining about the use of pocket holes in this project... im sure the original poster meant this as more of an inspirational video, and also a beginner friendly video. there is nothing wrong with using pocket holes for something like this. keep in mind, he has kids as stated in his video. they are very rough on furniture in general, and if he has to spend another say 10 bucks to make a new stool as a replacement, thats his choice. if you dont want to use opcket holes in yours, use whatever joinery method you prefer. this was meant to be a quick and dirty method to make bar stools, period.

    Use pocket holes + a good wood glue. The wood will break before the joint breaks. It's not the strongest joint you can use, but it beats pocket holes alone. All it takes to break a pocket hole joint is a twist or a weak spot in the area of the wood where the hole was drilled. I use pocket holes to pull glued joints tightly together and provide a bit of extra strength.

    First of all this is an easy build and the tools required are somethimg u can use on other projects. Those that are complaing about the use of pockets screws, well you can do whatever you want to impove the strenght and rigidity of these chairs. The video to build this chair gives you the basics. If your going to pick it apart then move on. Great video. Thank you for your time to publish it.

    It's an excellent beginning for you. You really need a better table saw though. I have one exactly like yours in the video, a Ryobi pos, but it's now a shelf in the garage until I cannibalize it for parts. Hunt on craigslist for an old cast iron craftsman for around the same price and then grab one of the sears align-a-rip fences and your work will go 1000 Xs smoother. That Ryobi is a finger ripper. I know this from personal experience.. lol
    I'd go with the 113 craftsman series belt drive. The new ones they sell now are crap.

    I like the design. I am supposed to build dining room tables and chairs for this charity for there clients. This is so far the most reasonably priced chair I have seen yet. The only issue I have is I need a 17-inch seat height and a total height of 36 inches. I can get Southern Yellow Pine 2X6 for $5.00 a board 8 feet long. I would not use pocket screws for the joinery. I'm going to use tongue and groove construction. If you look at most chairs that are made in quantity they use tongue and groove construction. IMO the pocket screws would come loose after a couple of years of daily use. Pocket screws are an excellent choice for tables since there not constantly moving. Enjoyed watching your video.

      No Sir, you don't. Pocket hole assemblies are an abomination. The are strong enough for a chair assembly as shown in this video but not strong enough for the chair to last. Pocket holes have their place and this is NOT one of them.

    • @Diybaron
      @Diybaron  8 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I don't understand those of you making comments like this. I used a cheap framing 2x6 and pocket holes to make a quick and cheap barstool that actually turned out really good. It is strong but probably not going to last forever. Had I made it out of expensive hardwood I probably would have used a different joint. This is a project just about anyone can do with limited tools. The point wasn't to build a stool to last generations. I would have that was obvious.

    • @jefmarshall8202
      @jefmarshall8202 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Keep going with whatever works for you, DIYBaron. Millions of people have put projects together using pocket holes. If they were that unhappy with the results, you'd see a lot more pocket hole jigs selling used. In fact, most the used ones I've seen have been at estate sales!

    Busts out crappy Ryobi job site saw. Me: "bet there is gonna be a shit ton of pocket holes."
    I respect the Kreg Pocket hole system. And I even use it from time to time in hidden places. But to assemble your whole damn small chair using pocket holes....even in highly seen areas? Come on man. Just drill some holes and use dowel pins or something easy. Or just chisel some small mortises for them. You already have a saw so you can cut tenons. I understand it is onnly like 4 bucks for the 2x6 but you can at least take some pride in it.

    • @Diybaron
      @Diybaron  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for taking the time to reply. In case you didn't notice, the chair wasn't finished in this video. Of course I covered the pocket holes on the back. There are angled dowels that work that same as if I used your method. The purpose of this video is not to show the best way or the only way. It is to show one way and that you can turn a single 2x6 into furniture. So you can sit around filling TH-cam with your negativity or actually go out and make something like I did.

    Pocket holes are beginning to be either over used or used in areas they shouldn't. Been seeing it since Kreg jigs became more popular. A project like this would have been a lot cleaner using joints such as Mortis and tenon. Table saw and some sort of hand saw or chisel creates them pretty simply. I'm in no way downing your project because you did a great job. I just have been seeing alot of pocket holes getting used lately. Keep up the good work.

And they are often hidden and dont distract from the finish work or the sho sugi ban work i seem to be addicted to on cosmeticly exposed parts lately. Again, making tge yse of the cheapest lumber you can buy not out of necessity but as a preference for the grain and light color that takes color very well!

      Timothy Heater pocket holes are useable when paired with wood glue. They only slightly strengthen the joint. I mainly use them to pull glued joints together tightly, especially for table top joinery. Dowels or biscuits only work if all of your boards are the same thickness. I don't have a planer so that's not always the case. All joinery has an application.
