Awesome. I am building a goat paddock on a budget, and this helps a lot. All of the other methods require so much more. None of them look this clean. Thanks Brother!
Perfect demonstration of using a tension wire to support the H-brace. The only suggestion I would offer is to use the rebar on the upper brace as a tab to wrap and hold the wire. Leave about 1" of rebar protruding and it provides a very nice and strong tab.
Of all the methods on youtube to do the support wire this is THE best. Tried it for the first time and it came out perfect. Definitely will continue using this method on the remaining corner structures. Thanks FARMSTEAD and TH-cam!!
Awesomeeeee so glad we could help! I've also watched a bunch of the support wire wrap videos which is what inspired me to share the Hawaiian paniolo (cowboy) version. Thanks for tuning in :)
Nice job! Been watching a ton of videos on h-braces looking for one that did not use any hardware on their wire. Glad I found yours, thanks so much for sharing. My wife will love that it’s Paniolo style too. She used to make windsurfing sails there. Mahalo from Arizona!
Thanks Scott! Yeah I’ve watched a lot of h-brace videos as well and still found this theory to be the easiest with minimal tools and apparatus. Let me know if you have any questions about the “key” locking mechanism and feel free to come visit us in Hawaii anytime. Thanks for tuning in, aloha :)
Thanks Shawn. Was just watching some of your other videos looking for the h-brace construction. You have a great place there. We would love to visit. Have not been back in years. Aloha.
Yeah shucks we kinda skimmed thru the h-brace portion in Episode 3 to try and keep the segment under a certain time limit, but felt like we needed to go into detail with the brace wire support. I think from now on we’ll be doing more mini-episodes that go deeper into each task 👍🏽👍🏽
I realize that everyone does it their own way.😎....... Just thought I'd add a suggestion... Besides the staples, my dad always taught me to cut a notch in the posts for the wire. It didn't have to be deep. But it helped keep the wire from wanting to "walk" up/down the post and pulling the staples free, as you tighten the wire.
Pretty much the same way I've always done it except I always used one wrap of 9 gauge. I wasn't sure how well it would work with the 12.5 but it looks great, and looks better to me than the ratchet tighteners everybody seems to be using.
Totally! We would normally use 9 gauge but they were out everywhere, and this was peak covid so this was our only option at that time. 12.5 gauge much easier to work with tho so that was nice LOL. Thanks for tuning in 🤙🏽🤙🏽
Burrrah! This vid right here. I have 10 acres Aina Hoʻopulapula Homestead in Kahikinui, Maui and been reforesting. Slowly building stone walls and needing to fence large portions to keep out the roaming wild cattle in the area. Scoured youtube for simple H brace wiring technques that no need fancy tools. Mahalo nui for sharing this. Hana hou!
Lol stoked, we're glad you found this video useful, and congrats on the 10-acres! Yeah I watched A BUNCH of fencing and H-brace videos during the pandemic and they all used clamps and weird gadgets, etc. which is why I created this video. I found the old paniolo technique to be much easier and much more efficient. Mahalo for tuning in and see you all in the next video :)
Could you use this same method to tighten the line wires? Instead of terminating a wire at the last post you wrap it around and then back past two or three posts and terminate there. Then twist them the same way you show here.
Hmm I don't see why not.. I've never tried that before so I couldn't tell ya, but I do know if your h-brace wire gets loose you can undo the "key" and re-tighten as needed, if needed.
The old Hawaiian cowboys didn't have access to much supplies so they worked with what they had. Minimal hardware and the best technique I've learned so far. Thanks for tuning in :)
Best vid and technique on this! Thank you!!! Do you have a vid for pulling and installing no climb 48" horse fence? I'm trying to figure out the best and least expensive way to solo that.
Thank you! I honestly find it the easiest and most efficient way with minimal gadgets and attachments. And this is the only “how-to” video we have so far, but maybe we’ll make another one soon. Thanks for tuning in!
First off, I love how clean this brace wire is! Keeps them well inside of where the electric wire will be running. What exactly are you referring to as "brace wire"? Is it just 170k psi wire or something different? Also, I have to agree with another commenter that the locking wire isn't really doing much. However, I think that by adding another lock at the top and bottom "Y" would definitely accomplish the locking effect. I'll be giving this a try pretty soon, Thanks!
Sweet. Mine is similar, but I use rebar to twist and leave rebar in to retighten on down the road as needed. Curious on how you tighten this up later on. Are you just removing the lock wire, twisting, and relocking?
Awesome! Yeah we haven't had to re-tighten anything yet but I would assume having to take out the "key" to re-tighten and then redoing the key to lock it all in again. Thanks for tuning in and any suggestions for improvement is always welcomed. Aloha! :)
Appreciate the explaining. I have watched more than a few fence videos. Yours was well done. We have ripped lava at our property in Mountain View. I like the fact that you mentioned you are not fencing in your entire perimeter in other video. Definitely something for us to consider doing🍄🌈😃🤙
Sick man and thank you thank you! Yeah the soil in Hamakua probably a little easier than Puna rock, lol but can do. And we would like to fence off the perimeter but can’t afford it yet, so gonna take it by phases 🤙🏽
@@shawnpila you make it look easy, lol! I did one post today and that 12.5 gauge is tough to bend. I see why you use your thumb. My son and I went for 20 wraps but at 15 is begins to or wants to unravel. How does yours stay in place? We'll give it a shot again. tomorrow
On the final tighten, my twist didn't make it to 25 turns. It snapped at 19. My fault 100%. I just left it to the test of time, I'm not going to do it again. Mostly just decorative since it's only 165' and no cattle...fence is for keeping humans out. Thanx for the tips, it looks good.
Oh man! Yeah the 25 turns was just a suggestion and should always be done according to feel. Glad you got it going again and hope you keep them humans out lol. Aloha!
Honestly the easiest method I’ve learned so far. I’ve watched a ton of other brace wire videos on TH-cam and they all require way more tools and apparatus.
Ayyy thanks my man, that’s the OG paniolo (Hawaiian Cowboy) technique. Minimal tools, minimal effort. Been getting mixed reviews so I’m glad you agree 🤙🏽🤙🏽
Yeah that's what I thought cuz that's how it's done here in Hawaii, but I've watched a ton of h-brace tutorial videos on TH-cam and there seemed to be a lot of extra tools and unnecessary apparatus being used. But, everyone has their own way of doing things and I felt the need to share this version. Thanks for tuning in 🤙🏽🤙🏽
Sorry, no. Don't place staples along the grain, angle them a bit in the correct direction. You opened up a crack immediately at the top of your post. You kinked and weakened the brace wire when you temporarily bent it back on the staple to hold it. When you tie off your wire, run the first wrap of the tail wire on the inside of the loop then the rest on the outside like you did and it will keep your join from slipping. Your "key" locks nothing, and you'll have to remove your "lock" wire to re-tension. You need a stick or piece of rebar that is held against the horizontal brace in order to keep the brace-wire from unwinding. Cheers!
Awesome. I am building a goat paddock on a budget, and this helps a lot. All of the other methods require so much more. None of them look this clean. Thanks Brother!
Epic, glad we could help!
I’m doing my braces this week, your method is the cleanest and most neat I’ve found yet, thanks!

I'm getting ready to start on my h braces and this really helped. I'm going with your method. Thanks a lot!

Your splitting hairs. This is a 20-30 year brace.
I'm in SD. What you say is what everyone does around here. I've even used wood as the key. This way you have a way to retighten the cross wires.
Needed to make up a H assembly today. I went with the reo method because it has the ability to re-tension with less mucking around.
Get rabbits as your first farm animal
