Surf. Family. Farm.
A healthy blend of mauka (mountain side) and makai (ocean side) showcasing some of Big Island's best surfers and surf adventures, family friendly content and a whole lot of farming.
THE FARMSTEAD (TH-cam series 2021)
Amidst a global pandemic high school sweethearts, Shawn Pila and Kelly Green, move back to their hometown and purchase a piece of property along the Big Island's lush Hamakua Coast where they plan to build their dream home, and a farm.
Watch this educational step-by-step approach to farming in Hawaii as the newlyweds, their pet pig Humphrey and a group of expert farmer friends work to transform an overgrown lot into home sweet homestead. But no one said that the "farm life" would be easy and finding balance between the daily grind and building a farm will have this young couple wondering if the juice is actually worth the squeeze.
It's off-grid, it's sustainable, and it's a taste of Hawaii that you'll never forget.

THE FARMSTEAD | How To Harvest & Eat RAW Sugarcane
THE FARMSTEAD
Season 1 Episode 8 - BONUS EPISODE
How To Harvest and Eat RAW Sugarcane
Shawn visits the GoFarm Hawai'i campus in Hilo to demonstrate how to harvest and eat raw sugarcane with no major tools, just his handy dandy machete.
Sugarcane has a rich history in Hawaii, beginning around 600 AD when the first varieties were introduced by the islands' early settlers. Native Hawaiians used sugarcane for various purposes, including food, medicine, and building; they chewed the stalks for their sweet juice and to maintain dental health. In the early 19th century, sugarcane became Hawaii's primary export crop, significantly driving the local economy and population growth. The demand for sugarcane labor led to a substantial influx of immigrants from around the world.

Awesome and congratulations! Would love to visit the Philippines sometime :) We are still in the beginning phases of our project as well with lots to learn still, but hoping we can share our process and help inspire others ing the way. Thank you so much for tuning in, aloha!

STEP 1: be filthy rich...
in Hawaii
🤣🤣 riiiight.. man how much easier it would be 😅😭
Yeahman
Haha yewwww! And I got the date wrong LOL
That’s a lot of rain all at once!! 😮
@@TheQueenOfDreamsyeah it's crazy, we get this kinda rain at least twice a year but it's still a sight to see everytime 😅
@@shawnpila I was going to ask, does it all happen in August, or it’s it like an August/February cycle?
@@TheQueenOfDreamsyeah hurricane season in Hawaii runs from June to end of November, but August is the peak of it
Multiple Congratulations! glad to see the progress you guys have made and see what's coming next. Aloha! 🤙🏼
Mahalo Jason! Yeah still a bunch of work to do and a bunch more trees that need to be planted, but stoked on the progress so far and feeling motivated to take that next step. Aloha man!
Epic!
😄😄
😍😎💯🏄🏝
Teeheeee let's goooo!
I cried! How precious. To see you there with the fam! Amazing. ❤
Aww thanks Dom, miss you man!
So did the ulu orchard survive? Wasnt sure if i seen it on the land. No judgment if it didnt. Nice house! We're trying to build one similar on Kauai and are just entering the permit process.
Yup the ulu's are still going! We did lose about 6 keiki's from wild pigs, but I dug them up and put them in pots. They're fully rehabilitated and ready to go back in the ground. The acre plot is a bit overgrown at the moment but I feel like the trees like a little bit of shade LOL. Good luck with everything, I know the permit process can be a drag. Aloha man!
Yeah buddy! love to see it! 🚜🙌
Yeeeeeah you thanks for tuning in man, hope all is swell brother!
Good to have you back! Congrats on the kid!
Thank you thank you! Yeah it's been a wild ride, but we're feeling good about the farm and not completely defeated. And we got more videos coming so stay tuned!
The Farmstead looking killer! 🤙🏽 Glad to see y’all back at it
Yeeee right on Joel, take care brother! Let us know when you're back on the island (shaka emoji)!
LETS GOOO!!!!
Hahaaa yessah, thanks chief 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Sweeeeeeeeeeet!! Yeahman
Yeeeeeahman, lov you brah!
I love this videooo. That’s some quality farm footage right thurrr
Mahalooo! Blood, sweat and tears right thurr LOL
Broooo this is good man!!! Keep posting weekly man!!!
Thanks my dude, we trying! Love you bah!
Congratulations 🎉
Thank you THANK YOU!!
Could you use this same method to tighten the line wires? Instead of terminating a wire at the last post you wrap it around and then back past two or three posts and terminate there. Then twist them the same way you show here.
Hmm I don't see why not.. I've never tried that before so I couldn't tell ya, but I do know if your h-brace wire gets loose you can undo the "key" and re-tighten as needed, if needed.
Great vid!
Thanks Ramiro!
Aloha e Shawn Pila Mahalo for sharing i really hope we all can connect one day. Awesome job.i would like to visit your farm. Aloha
Wonderful no sleeve or in-line strainer needed
😎
I’m glad I went through so many videos because I came across this one. Thank your cousin because this is a winner.
Lol epiiic glad we could help!!
Yeah, Im 5 ft and will NOT be using an auger on blue rock😂
I'm in Hawaiian Acres and its lava not soil. So checking this out for ideas to keep wild hogs feom eating my gardens..again😂 mahalo for info
I am a Canada citizen, and I am wondering if it's possible for me to buy a farmland in Hawaii to plant breadfruit trees? I love trees, and breadfruit trees in particular. And what type of visa with which I can work in the U.S legally and permanently, E2 visa? thank you in advance
I'm not sure on the logistics but my neighbor and his wife are from Canada and have been living in Hawaii for the last 10 years on a lychee orchard. It is very possible. Thanks for tuning in, aloha!
What sorcery was this?
Lol. Old Hawaiian Cowboy tactics 😎
Pretty much how everyone does it
Yeah that's what I thought cuz that's how it's done here in Hawaii, but I've watched a ton of h-brace tutorial videos on TH-cam and there seemed to be a lot of extra tools and unnecessary apparatus being used. But, everyone has their own way of doing things and I felt the need to share this version. Thanks for tuning in 🤙🏽🤙🏽
Fantastic! Thanks for making a clean vid.
You bet, and thanks for tuning in!
Wow great channel and info, amazing message mahalo!
Thank youuuu! We aim to post more videos soon, so stay tuned and thanks for watching 😎🤙🏽
thank you, I found it very help full.
Awesome!!
Yeaaaa boiiiii
Yesssssah haha!
Awesome. I am building a goat paddock on a budget, and this helps a lot. All of the other methods require so much more. None of them look this clean. Thanks Brother!
Epic, glad we could help!
Thank you

Yessa
cheeheeee yeah cuz!
This is what I was looking for!!!
🙏🏼🙏🏼🤙🏽
😂❤❤🙏😁
:)
😀how can I work in that farm?❤🙏
Awesome video!
Thank youuuuu!
Saving about 100 $$ and going with cousin Jesse's method today! Thanks cousin!
Yeeeee stoked, happy new year!
Wow, great video! 🔥🔥🔥 Dude is amazing!
Haha thank youuu, happy new year!
Happy new year to you too, Shawn!...hey, you totally deserve the praise...you're incredible.!!@@shawnpila
What is yhe technique to go down buddy ? Are u fly off 😮?
Lol kinda like a fire pole but with one hand around the tree and the other in between your belly and the tree so you don’t get scratched. And once you get to a comfortable height you can go back to frog or monkey 🙈
Where can we find episode 7, 9 and onwards?
Our appologies! We took a little break from filming and will be hoping to post the rest of the episodes soon. Thanks for tuning in :)
Aloha and Mahalo Nui!! Huge help and the best cleanest method I have seen!
Thank youuu, hope it goes well for ya!!
breadfruit is very known here in the Philippines. taste very very good
Awesome! Yeah it’s slowly making a come back here in Hawaii. Rice became very popular but we’re hoping to revive the ‘ulu in the next few years or so 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙌🏽
nice! very inspiring
Thank you!
Well done no fancy shit just what a farmer has at farm typically
Precisely 😎 LOL thanks for tuning in 🤙🏽🤙🏽
Pretty much the same way I've always done it except I always used one wrap of 9 gauge. I wasn't sure how well it would work with the 12.5 but it looks great, and looks better to me than the ratchet tighteners everybody seems to be using.
Totally! We would normally use 9 gauge but they were out everywhere, and this was peak covid so this was our only option at that time. 12.5 gauge much easier to work with tho so that was nice LOL. Thanks for tuning in 🤙🏽🤙🏽
