Going Solo - Exploring Solo games with a new solo gamer

  • Hello everyone!
This is Johannes, and today, I am going solo!
Playing solo games is something I have always been intrigued by, but never bitten by. It has been a part of the hobby that has been growing super fast the last few years, and a part of the hobby that I haven't touched.
This series will change that. I am doing a solo gaming challenge for a year, (at least) to explore solo games and find out if they are for me or not. I want to find out what kind of games I do enjoy solo, and which ones I'd rather play with other people.
I will be doing at least one video a month, talking about the solo games I played that month, the best, the "worst", and my experiences and feelings. I might also do some solo only game reviews, but we will see what time brings us!
I hope this is a series that you will enjoy, both if you are a solo gamer, and if you are like me, and haven't played many games solo.
Please let me know your favorite solo games in the comments, and share all your tips for solo gaming!
    Thank you for watching!

Hi Johannes, I'm also a trying to discover the wonderful world of solo gaming, so I'm glad I can be on this journey together with you. What I miss most when playing solo: the trash talk, the after game analysis, the laughter with like-minded friends. So I'm not completely sold on solo gaming. But I'm trying, since my game group doesn't meet as frequently as I'd like it to.
So I'm just getting my feet wet. I tried Terraforming Mars (both classic and AE), Earth, Empires of the North, Raiders of the North Sea, Oh my goods!
I'm looking forward to more videos on your solo journey!

Nice video! As far as recommendations on solo board games: Maquis is one of my favorites (easy to set up and play, very immersive). Superhot - The Card Game is also amazing: getting into it is a bit tricky, but when you 'get it', the game has an amazing flow to it. What I like about both games is that you have to draw randomized objectives at the start that gives you random win conditions. I like those type of games the best I think.

I am also not a Solo gamer (BGA and Yucata are awesome), but having a 2year old and 7weeks old have made me try out my first Solo boardgame. I was quite impressed with Expeditions from Stonemaier game. The game itself is already multiplayer solitaire anyways and I was quite impressed with how seamless the solo bot was. I highly recommend it. I then tried Discordia Solo and that's also a very minimal hassle free Bot. I'm excited to embark on this Solo gaming with you as well Johannes.

Looking forward to your new series. I tend to play solo quite a bit but only very lightweight games. Hopefully you'd give time to them. Games I have played and enjoyed: Cascadia & Trekking through History (both have Solo option), Splendor & Sagrada (with fan made Automa by dukefanblue2005), SOS Titanic, The Lost Expedition, Maquis, For Northwood! & Desolate(all Solo specific) Aquamarine, Next Station London & Cartographers (roll/flip & write specific) & Skulls of Sedlec Monstrance Solo & Food Chain Island (button Shy)

I will probably play mostly lighter games solo, as I don't have energy for a lot of overhead I think! (Especially when starting out) Thank you for all the great suggestions!

Dawn of the Zeds is a very good solo game (which can be played co-op) and has a horror theme. Zombie attacks on your town. Nemo's War is also a very good solo game. It can be played cooperatively, but is much better solo.

Thanks for a great video on playing solo. I love solo games. Especially the smaller box games. My first love is the Oniverse series by Shadi Torbey. The newest game in the series - Cyberion - is fantastic. And my second love is One deck dungeon. Such a lovely, fun game. I hope you can trie this one sometimes. Have fun experiencing the solo world. There are so many excellent games.

Welcome to solo gaming. I tend to agree with your opinions on games and your reviews have cost me money.
Here are some choices I like solo that I have not seen mentioned
    Lands of Galzyr
    Unsettled
    Star Wars Outer Rim
    Anachrony

Glad you’re doing this serious. Based on your opening, it sounds like me, you would prefer solo coop games as there is a win loss condition. In my opinion the best solo games are the FFG LCG like Marvel Champions and Arkham Horror. Survival and exploration games are also excellent like Robinson Crusoe , Tainted Grail, Mage Knight, and Too Many Bones. Great non coop are Scythe, Ark Nova, Kanban EV

Suggestions for solo only: Warps edge (5*), resist (=witchcraft), black sonata (astonishingly clever design), one deck dungeon, d-day dice, the whole oniverse wu orld, button shy: ancient realms, the ..opolises, food chain island,

I believe in jumping into the deep end of the pool straight away. So here are two recommendations for two spectacular games, each offering deep immersion, satisfying gameplay and unique challenges.
The Hunters A.D. 2114 plays excellent as a multi-hand solo (I actually wouldn't play it with a group) and offers a fantastic world and campaign to dwell into and roam. But be aware, you need a lot of table real-estate. Seriously, a lot.
Burncycle shines not only with incredible variety and replayability but also to adjust complexity and time requirement to your liking. It is a bit crunchy in the beginning but once you learned the system and it's components it offers a fun experience.
Ahh, there are so many awesome solo games.

My first ever solo game was Spirit Island... so, there's that. But these days, the majority of my solo time is often lighter to medium weight games (save a Feast for Odin, which is a BANGER with a buttery smooth solo mode). But I think starting out it is smart to focus on what I like to call Tea & Coffee games, things you can play in the morning or at night or the weekend with a cup of tea or coffee (or your beverage of choice), that are more relaxed and cozy feeling. Cafe (from Pythagoreas) is probably my #1 in thi category.
As far as solo & writes, Metro X is a real banger, and there's a lot of fanmade maps for it; Hadrian's Wall was #1 on my solo list last year, but if you haven't tried Three Sisters, that one is almost as combo-tastic, but a little lighter.
I would also highly suggest checking out some Print & Plays, too--Ada Lovelace: Consulting Mathematician is one of my favorites.

Hmm, interesting point of view. How so? Personally I would call myself a pretty devoted gamer (and would have been without the channel as well), but I would probably never have played solo games if it wasn't for the channel giving me a reason to challenge myself :)

    • @nirszi
      @nirszi 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

For two reasons. Solo only games are on the rise, you'd miss out a chunk of the market as a player and secondly because solo gamers just play more games. Average peeps can't meet up with friends every day or even every two days to play games. If you are really into board gaming and it's not your profession and you want to play more, you play solo.
Bonus reason that applies to many people. There is something very unique in playing games at your own pace, without pressure and expectations from others.
Bonus reason two for content creators. They'd be missing out a big portion of their audience. As solo gaming is on the rise, I feel that many content creators discovered this.

My favourite solo this year so far has been Legacy or Yu. I loved playing through that. I love the story that Final Girl tells. It’s always intense and usually comes down to the last turn with either side in it to win. I have just started playing Witchcraft. Wasn’t sure after the first play but played a few times now and starting to really really enjoy it.

I’m a big time solo player so I love that you’re doing this now. If you find the time, I would love to see reviews of games from the solo perspective. I hope you find a new found love for it because it can be so much fun. I would definitely recommend playing Legacy of Yu since it is a lot of fun and a campaign style game that is made for solo play.

The Guild of Merchant Explorers is wonderful to play solo! The Solo mode is really good! My favourite Sologames are: Sprawlopolis, Under falling skies and Coffee Roaster. I am sure you will have fun with these games and with the whole project. And although you do not want to play „big games“: try Ark Nova. You will not need more than 80 minutes per game and you will be surprised of how good this works solo. My favourite „flip and write“s: all the three „welcome to…“!

Dune: Imperium is a pretty easy medium weight euro to run solo. You play with two automa but basically just flip the automa deck and put their workers in the spot and they get what the card says. There's like one or two rules other than that but that's about it.

It seems to me that you like crunchier games mostly- I’ve played many of the games you previewed but I find myself enjoying games that have a bit of story or challenge. So Hadrians wall has been fun, viticulture has a solo challenge that forces you to try different strategies, the 18 holes of Rolling Realms are all games I found fun beyond just the beat your own score. I’m a huge Uwe fan, and also enjoy the solo challenge of Agricola where you carry over occupation cards to the next game and try to increase your score. Also Nusfjord where you play three games-using different tiles. Paper book adventures has also been an enjoyable word based game.

I’m not much of a solo player, and am generally not a huge fan of Garphill games, but I do enjoy the solo mode of Architects of the West Kingdom with the Works of Wonder expansion. The automa is not completely stupid but also not too much of a hassle to administer.
I also had fun with playing Woodcraft solo.

Love it! Will be interested to see what you find that you like. I stay away from fiddly involved automa, so I've mostly done beat your score style. I have only a few solo-only games because I love bringing family members to the table to play when they're willing :) I have really enjoyed Spirit Island solo and Ark Nova as bigger challenges (I find them quite hard to win still but I'm getting better!), but have also enjoyed the Oniron series. Dinosaur Island: Rawr'n'write is a fantastic, a bit heavier roll and write that is my favorite solo x'n'write. It is going to be interesting to see if you will become a solo gamer ^_^ I play physically only solo as the Mr. isn't interested and I am too recluse to go to game groups. I love your video! It almost took me 2 years to really get into playing solo, but now 44% of my game plays are solo. I almost played 400 times solo this year and I am on schedule for my 250x1 solo game challenge (play 250 different games solo in 2023).
So as a huge solo fan, I am really pumped to follow your solo journey.
For solo only My top 3 recommendations would be: Cyberion, Under Falling Skies, For Northwood! I haven’t tried Final Girl and Legacy of Yu, but those are supposed to be great, too.
The Guild of Merchant Explorers and Come Sail Away! are both really relaxing smooth games.
You mentioned that you love Pirates of Maracaibo, you could try the solo mode of that one.
And many Uwe Rosenberg games have solo modes with little to no up keep like Nusfjord, Atiwa.

The Isle of Cats has a great solo-mode. You play against "your sister" and try not to help her. But that's difficult because you fill the same boat for "her" and yourself. I think it was my first big solo game and I still enjoy it.

Nusfjord's solo "campaign" (ie 3 games without resetting building decks) is nice and accessible while also surprisingly fun! Under Falling Skies is a fun puzzle (since I know you like dice placement), and Warp's Edge (without any expansions) is a fun bag-builder solo experience too! Imperium Classics/Legends is also good solo but the fun factor is highly dependent on what civs you play as and play against. Looking forward to your journey!

Legacy of Yu, Final Girl, and Iron Helm are my favorite solo games that were specifically designed as solo games. My other favorite solo games are multiplayer games with very strong solo modes and include Lost Ruins of Arnak, Rococo Deluxe, Deep Rock Galactic, Oak, and Keep the Heroes Out. I definitely prefer solo games with an automa rather than just trying to beat your own score.

As far as medium-heavy euro games that could fall into your "bigger games" category I can't recommend Sabika (Ludanova) by German P. Millan enough. You can play it multiplayer and the solo mode is probably the lowest upkeep for how well it manages to be competitive. Once you have the multiplayer rules down the solo rules are extremely low overhead. The AI's turns take 20 seconds or less. So, you can really focus on your own strategy. And in the end it is very competitive scoring. I felt like while the strategies were varied and deep it was also pretty easy to learn. The iconography and graphic design of the board are great, too. By my third play I was able to just use the board to figure out what actions did and what to do for round upkeep and didn't have to consult the rulebook anymore. I would definitely say to check it out!

I mostly play solo to be better at teaching the games later! I find that teaching often requires constant clarifications during the games (people forget, learning is hard!), making sure people don't play the rules wrong, or even giving advices for heavier games where players are overwhelmed. So playing solo first allows me to be more ready for those regular games and spend less time thinking about my own game, and more time helping others.
I do play Under falling skies occasionally, that's the exception, it's very good. I also played the downloaded Arnak campaign solo, very good!
Paul Grogan just played Evacuation solo and said it's very good (although some solo rules in the rulebook are not clear so check out his channel first for clarifications).
Looking forward to your thoughts on final girl, I heard it's dice heavy which puts me on the fence, but the theme is great!

    • @BoardGamingRamblings
      @BoardGamingRamblings  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

My favourite solo-ish game is Blackout Hong Kong, so I can advice you that one for when you feel ready and into it ^^' I see a lot of tips in the comments that go a bit too heavy for what you implied you want to go in the beginning. Careful with that...
Under Falling Skies and Coffee Roster sound like good games to start with. The second is a bag builder and I remember you like Orleans quite a bit. On the other hand, Deep Space D-6 was a big fail for me...
You can also try Jump Drive (there is a solo fan made "campaign" on bgg very good and challenging) and Oh My Goods - officially you need the expansion to play solo, but there is a fan made solo bot just with the base game that does wonders.
Legacy of Yu is great and not complex. I think after you try 2/3 games and you feel comfortable (and liking) solo games, you can jump to it.
I will leave other things for later ;)

@@BoardGamingRamblings About cartographers: you can always play some of the multiple Monthly chanllenges from BGG. You play solo and then you compare your scores with other players. For quite a while, I did it and enjoyed my plays a lot

I am likewise a solo newbie; however, Halls of Hegra blew me away with how engaging and smooth-playing it was (not as "war-gamey" as it looks). Plus the Norway setting might make it worth checking out for you! 😊

If you want to have more info on the best solo games, check the BGG 1-Player Guild Top200 Solo games. It's currently running for the year 2023 but you can check the results of all the past years to see what games people prefer in the solo world.
Also my recommandations for quick to setup and fun solo games: if you only have 10-15 minutes, check Button Shy Sprawlopolis, Food Chain Island, Skulls of Sedlec and ROVE, and if you have 30-45 minutes Under Falling Skies is great.

Welcome to the dark side, I hope you have fun here :)
I think you have great choices there
Legacy of Yu has one of the best inserts I've encountered lately, and setting up/ tearing down the game take 2 minutes, it's so quick. I don't know if you know, because you didn't mention it, but it is a Campaign game... I don't know how you feel about Calico and Cascadia, but they are fun solos, and also the rules come with achievements so it's not just a beat your own score (also, Hadrian's wall has an official campaign on BGG)If you'll enjoy solo play, after you play all the games that come with solo - you start looking on BGG for fan made solos (like for Azul, etc)

I thought I am not a solo gamer… then I tried Hadrians Wall and I love it ❤. So I realised it depends on the game. For example I love deduction games, because I want to solve the puzzle - not need to compete with others. Now I am playing Archeologic and Legacy of Yu - just started so I can’t say how it is yet. It is easy to setup and get going. Big plus. I don’t enjoy if the solo mode involves managing a dummy player. But Arnak is super easy and I like that, just a bit too much setup. I could imagine that I would also enjoy Ark Nova solo, but haven’t tried yet. Funny coincidence that you are doing this video now as I am exactly in the same position of starting to solo more 😂

Hadrian's Wall is a perfect solo design with minimal setup - it's not working as a multiplayer and has a great mini campaign on BGG.
Automa games can go from easily manageable like Carnegie to super complex Turczi bots :)
You will like Turing Machine as it is basically a logical puzzle not really a game.
Witchcraft / Resist is also immersive and challenging.
Some solo only games are great to play 2 player tbh...

I personally don't like too much playing the solo mode of good multilayer games, so I like a lot of those picks, like Under Falling Skies, Warp's Edge, Final Girl, Legacy of Yu and a good small one I don't think is in here : Maquis!

    Helloooo Johannes!
And welcome to the world of Solo Gaming!
I LOVE playing games solo, (shameless self promo coming) and have actually made it the focus of my videos on That Board Game Show - www.youtube.com/@thatboardgameshow
Here are a few of my favourites (most of which I have made videos for):
Rolling Realms (I've made an entire series of videos showcasing the solo play)
    One Deck Dungeon
Seven Bridges (a fantastic roll and write with a very clever solo mode)
    FUSE
    Star Realms: Frontiers
    Lost Ruins of Arnak
    Wingspan
    Smiths of Winterforge
    Nations: the Dice Game
All of those are light or medium and the solo play is basically identical to the multiplayer game.
And then when you're ready for something a bit more involved:
Underwater Cities (or any Vladimir Suchy game. I believe they all have solo modes except for Pulsar 2849)
    Bonfire
    Viticulture
Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island
I could just keep going... but I'm sure that is enough to keep you very busy for the foreseeable future ;)
    Happy Solo Gaming :)

I would avoid David Turczi for as much as you can. When I first started solo gaming and trying out his solo work, at first you think wow this is interesting how it all works, but after you play actually good solo modes, you'll realize how bad, convoluted and not user-friendly they are/can be. Yes, they work, and yes some people enjoy them, however the work it takes to learn an unintuitive completely new ruleset, just to run a bot that should just be simply taking spaces and cards/whatever, it's ridiculous. So, fair warning, avoid David Turczi for a while!
Examples of good solo modes in heavier games: Carnegie, Lost Ruins of Arnak, Paladins of the West Kingdom.

      @BoardGamingRamblings  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

I'm a big fan of many of Turczi's designs, but I will keep this in mind. His heavier solo games is far away for me, so it will be a long time until I even think of it, hehe! Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

I think you just lost any credibility with "but after you play actually good solo modes." There is a reason Turczi is one of the first names that come to mind when talking about solo games. A good solo mode simulates a player's actions and isn't just a random card flip or beat-your-own score.

    • @cell141
      @cell141 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Good solo modes do simulate a player with a simple card flip though. After exploring solo gaming so much and being a solo variant designer myself, something I've learned that is more important than anything else is being user friendly. A good solo bot is quick, follows normal player rules, simulates a fair opponent, where the player does no thinking or minimal thinking for the bot. Like I said, after I played good user friendly solo modes like Carnegie, Lost ruins of Arnak, Paladins, Wingspan, Barcelona, First Rat, and many fan variants. The effort to learn and relearn Turczi bot's are not worth the time. Some people enjoy them but I reckon most people do not. Bots being involved and complicated do not make them better.@@TheDarktater

Agree 💯 on avoid Turzi solo modes. Ughhh. Brilliant designer, but so much work/focus running his bots that you lose focus on your own game, which is why you are playing after all...

This is a very shallow assessment and plan for solo games. The genre is so much deeper than this.

Welcome to the solo gaming world!
My top reasons why I play solo is:
    1. I’m an introvert and i really enjoy being alone.
    2. It is difficult to find people to play games with since everyone has different schedules.
    3. A lot of people are not “FUN” to play games with and some of them get too overworked on rules and is uncomfortable.
    4. Analysis paralysis.
    5. But mostly, I’m more of a 1vs1 type of player so I really enjoy 2 player only games.
I play a lot of games with solo/coop but the ones I avoid are the one with campaign modes. (Arkham Horror LCG is the exception) 🫶🏼
