5 Reasons Rooftop Tents Suck

- Yes. You read that right. The man who always is in a rooftop tent, is saying that they suck.
The truth of the matter is, roof top tents are not as glorious as people think they are. We all have had this idea that they were the best things ever created when we first started out... but there is definitely some quirks to them and they may not be for every overlander or adventurer.
At the end of the day I still love them despite their quirks... do you?

You make some good - valid points. Thank you for the advice. This will help me decide whether I need to bring my ground tent or the RTT.
We use a Napier truck bed tent, we just got back for an overnight and my wife finally said, “let’s get a RTT” lol. We understand the downsides but for us we don’t ground camp in AZ due to the critters in the desert. So we are just tired of unloading the truck bed, putting up the tent, unpacking the totes, etc. A RTT depending on the model can save space too because you can keep your bedding in it. We are just trying to figure out what model to go with (buy once, cry once lol).
True that! I am definitely a big fan of a roof top tent as that is what I use. Just wanted to put a video out so people can see the downsides!
Right now I am running a Roam Adventure Co Rambler (they just discontinued it) and am loving the ease of set-up!
No critters can get in a ground tent that is closed
Been loving your videos. I have a 2007 FJ Cruiser that I've been slowly (very slowly) modding for the last 7 years.
I opted out of the roof top tent because:
1. It's big, heavy, and takes up way too much storage space. FJ's need all the room you can get and I use the roof rack to fit big bulky items I can't fit in the cab
2. I have 2 large dogs and there's no way I'm getting them up or down from there
3. Getting in/out of the ground tent is just easier...especially if you have to wake up at 3 AM to go pee
4. They're not super roomy
I went with the Gazelle T4 Hub tent instead that solves those problems for me. Setup takes 3-5 minutes by yourself if you're not rushing it and if there isn't any wind/rain. If weather is really bad, it's also big enough to fit 6 people inside to hide from the elements.
Thanks for all the content! Been going through your other vids :)
That is awesome man! For your scenario that definitely sounds like the way to go! Ground tents are solid. It’s also nice to fit that many people. Thanks for watching!
Daily drivers are unique with the RTT, but you can also pack a ground tent and take it with you on your RTT trip and use one or the other depending on your itinerary.
You can also mount your RTT to a small trailer and have a micro version of a “pop-up” system that gives you mobility and convenience to go where you want, when you want.
Here are some of the pros. If camping in the cold, RTT is much more comfortable compared to ground tent with respect to insulation, I personally experienced this on 25 F night. If you are a city guy like me and just getting into exploring the wilderness, the first thing you would probably try is ground tent camping in a developed campgrounds to get a feeling of safety from small critters or even bears. I stuck to developed campgrounds for many years for this reason. Got an RTT during COVID and tried camping in remote places (National forest and BLM lands) and after couple of nights me and family overcame the fear of being alone in the dark in a forest, animal sounds, crawlers etc. The RTT gave us a sense of safely and we could sleep peacefully. Now we seek out remote places during our travels and switch between RTT(in bear territory) or ground tent camping because of some of the reasons you mentioned (daily setup/takedown time & mobility). I tested gas mileage on three 2K mile road trips and found that I got better gas mileage with RTT by driving about 5MPH slower than I normally would without RTT. For us RTT was (and in certain situations still is) a phase that we had to go through to better experience the outdoors.
You’ve covered some very interesting points here ! 👍
1-min set up for The WoodsBuilt Sequoia roof top tent. :) Love it!
Sick, that is sweet!
Thanks for your thoughts. Will driving desert tracks for a month and wanted to be off the ground. Snakes, centipedes, scorpions etc.
There are cons of course but I love RTT for the simple fact that I can sleep elevated, away from bugs, animals and all those elements. Ground tents gross me out for some reason. RTT is the best.
These are some good things I haven't seen anyone list! Great vid
Thanks for watching 👊
Someday maybe you’ll mount it on top of a utility camping trailer. That will make the whole experience much more enjoyable.
We have a Crua Aer Maxx tent. Amazing and comfortable.
Checkout Quechua Van 500, it's an inflatable RTT from Decathlon. I didn't test it but I believe it could be setup on the ground too.
I will have to check that out thank you!
I think a hard shell RTT would save so much time setting up/tearing down. I currently have a soft RTT from 23zero. Used it for 30 days + so far and love it but it is getting old with the setup/tear down. Currently looking at hard shell like Armadillo or going all out to James Baroud.
It definitely does! I use a Roam Adventure Co Rambler on my subie and it is extremely quick
Another potential con with RTTs is when you pull up at a river, lake or beach area, but can't get your vehicle to the ideal camp spots for various reasons. You can just carry your ground tent in, but then the offset is having to lug extra gear from your car (cooking etc). Life is always swings and roundabouts.
Really, comparing a RTT to a tent is like apples to oranges. There both built for different scenarios...
Wanna keep all your gear with you, and be ready to stay at a new spot every night? Get a RTT
Want to be able to leave your gear at a "base-camp" and be able to reach spots only accessible on foot? Get a tent
@@Gendreau113 Yes, I agree. Like I said, swings and roundabouts.
@@steeevo0136 or you can do what I do, have a pre-packed hiking bag ready to go in your truck.
how did you mount roof top tent to tube rail on roof of FJ Cruiser?
I came into watching this video debating my plan. I have a small utility trailer that I intend to put a rack on for boats, with a quad underneath. Can fit through my gate in my backyard to air out, can be detached from my vehicle to go to the store etc, only drawback would be if I ever wanna take it off the trailer. I think I'll buy one. Tow it with the quad where trucks can't go
Good points👍
I have a motorcycle tent that makes out into the Yaj Mahal in 20 minutes, by myself. I think it is superior to any roof top tent because I can unhook, put on a security lock and leave, so Ihave that emergency mobility you discussed.
And I can pull it behind most any vehicle.
Man- that’s a fantastic looking FJ. Nice work.
Thanks man means a lot!
Hi what’s the weight limit of your roof rack
they are super expensive for what they are. Like, come on, they ask way too much for simple tech, they dont even try to innovate. I would happily pay 1500 usd for a good rtt if they offered something that justifies the price, but most rtt are basically the same.
I have camping set up for the inside of my Fj. just never could do the roof top tents. to hard to put on and I always felt like my Fj was going to tip over lol😂
Yeah I don't blame you, I am going to create an interior solo camping set-up shortly.
Sounds to me like the "I want it now" generation maybe a little whinny... 🤣
most everyone in a roof tent are newbies. Been there, never again.
I love my alucab tent. But it is a clamshell hard top. I don’t like the tent ones. My rrt takes about 2 minutes to completely set up. Look into alucab rtt.
Yeah alucabs are really neat I love them
@@OutboundIntent but expensive
Indeed
Also forgot that the fabric ones wear out
Another disadvantage (at least here in europe) is that it limits your max speed from 130 to 110.
I'm genuinely curious, Is that a law?
Pq tu mens 😂
Does it mean you can go above 130 mph because the engine is struggling??
its a law@@edwinalexander1170
@@edwinalexander1170 they mean kph
You forgot that they’re expensive!
...oh man...love my RTT! lol
Yeah, I definitely love them as well... making a video on that shortly.
The main reason I don't want one is because once you setup the tent ....you're not moving your vehicle unless you pack the tent up. This is a problem for having a Basecamp. I want to unload and just go out and explore in my truck....and come back to my tent. Not set it up again.
A solid reason! I definitely agree that rooftop tents keep you more stationary than most would think.
I don’t trust leaving my camp. Can’t afford to have anything stolen and then have no supplies suddenly.
Sure I camp with no one around but that also gives prime opportunity to steal as no witness to it.
@K9_Leash_Holder that's my outlook aswell. I'm not leaving $1000 worth of stuff while I'm driving around. I've never needed to leave camp once setup other then the very odd trip. When you can pack the tent in 5 minutes who cares about the odd time. I notice most of these TH-cam guys always have unrealistic wants out of camping. At least half of the hard shell reviews focus on setup and put away time. They justify thousands of dollars for literally 1-2 minutes of time.
I believe the whole point of a RTT is exactly what you said... There made for people that DONT want a "base camp" and want to stay in a different spot every single night, witch would be annoying with having to move your base camp every night. Realistically, you only need to pull out your RTT when you want to sleep, so untill that point you don't have any different of a setup then other people... You can either cook on a table, or have a slide out from the back of your vehicle. Either way your RTT can stay packed untill your closer to bed time haha
So imo with a good RTT, that can setup in a minute or two, I don't see a issue. Personally I don't leave my stuff alone at camp while I'm gone, I want ALL my gear with me the ENTIRE time.
But everyone's different, you rather leave your gear at a basecamp that you can come back to after exploring, I rather go explore and keep everything on my truck, then setup in a new location every night
This would be perfect for when you trailer a sxs or a 4 wheeler stuffed in the back.
I work at shows/events/or as you yanks say canies and got sick of sleeping in a swag on the side of a freeway under a tarp , I just got a rooftop tent as sleeping with my co workers is like sleeping near Viking reenactor's drinking and yes some are , I have not put the roof top tent on my ute but having the distance from a group of ANZAC reenactors when they start drinking with the yanks who bring out a bango and the miniature players who want to let lose ,yer I want to be away from them so I can start work at 4 am
Sounds like you need to go glamping dude😊
Nah I prefer braving the elements, I do a decent amount of backpacking as well and enjoy it very much haha
Agree 100%!!! Great vid as always!
Thanks for watching!
Could take 10 minutes to set up!
I’ve got a camper trailer. Takes a couple of hours to set up.
20 minute pack up!
You’re just winging about nothing.
Why a video with your sun glasses on?
Felt like it
@@OutboundIntent yeah right.
All I'm hearing is why YOUR RTT sucks, most of these points are completely and entirely inaccurate. My RTT is up in 1min, only weighs 50kg, barely added any fuel to my consumption, needs airing out just like any other sleeping device.
Yeah basically. I can setup my rtt faster than I could stake out my ground tent not even including actually setting it up
New James Baroud Odyssey is a disgrace. I regret so much buying that overrate crap 😢
What's wrong with walking around? Everything is focused on wanting to drive around.
I love doing that too, backpacking is one of my favorite things to do
you are giving confusing ideas Bro…u like it u don’t well people would know that and that being said people have different patience and understanding…get over it…
Sounds like you bought the wrong tent
Top Heavy Tent one woman lost 5mpg
Buy iKamper 😂
Sleep in the car!
I can't hate on that at all, just not possible with multiple people
@@OutboundIntentI sleep 2 inside my FJ, no issues. Have a simple platform so you can use all the space
Clam shell!!!
Very good option!
Bullshit
Thank's, you had saved my money.
