    (check out my latest video for an updated review on new issues I've been having with the rooftop tent)
    After so much interest in the budget rooftop tent from everyone asking if they are going to get value out of something so cheap I thought I'd do a review giving my personal opinion based on my experiences with the rooftop tent over the past year & a half

    Real good concept. Ive had one for years, paid for itself many times over compared to motels when travelling. Pack it up wet in the morning if so, then open up at a roadside stop to air and dry while having your smoko or lunch. Made a tub rack to suit the ute....low profile and easier access. Permanent fixture.....All good..

    Helped me decide to buy one. Used it for the first time and easily fits my wife and I and our 22 month old daughter that sleeps upside down and sideways.
    Needs a better mattress as I woke up and noticed my lower back and backside killing me as felt like I had sunk and was on the hard base. I only weigh 85kgs.

    • @Campingdownunder
      @Campingdownunder  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks mate 👍 it wouldn't work on a boat without building a frame for it to mount to. It would also make the boat very top heavy making it hard to control. It attaches with 8 bolts that slide along a rail. They give you a piece of metal with 2 holes in it which you use to clamp onto your mount. I have seen people mount them on the boat trailer before though

    Cheers for making this video it has cleared up a lot of questions and thoughts I've had on it, great to know that it handles fine in strong winds as that was my biggest concern if you could. I would be looking to use mine every day for when I start travelling, it would be a maximum of 1 month I'd say be my longest before doing a full on trip for months, in that time I'll be able to test everything out leading up to it. What's your thoughts on using the annex if you don't have a tall 4wd is it worth while getting it or just stick with the tent and get an awning?

    • @Campingdownunder
      @Campingdownunder  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad to hear I could help 👍the annex is great but a bit annoying if you have to pack it up every day for travel & it takes up valuable space where as an awning takes up no space and is always easy to pack up. Just be aware awnings can't handle strong winds where as the annex is fine in strong winds as long as it's strapped down well. It just flaps around a lot lol. Not really the best for shorter 4wds but if you've got time before your trip I'd get it cut & trimmed to suit the height of your car & then you won't have any issues 👍

    • @SimonPhillipsPhoto
      @SimonPhillipsPhoto 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Campingdownunder Cheers for the fast response! sounds like I won't get it with the annex as you're right it would take longer to setup and pack up each day plus takes up more room in the car. I'll look into awnings but just wouldn't use it in windy conditions as you have suggest not a ideal thing to do haha
      Cheers for the sound advice!

    Hey mate just wondering if there’s a door once u go up the ladder? Or does it just go straight into the tent

    • @Campingdownunder
      @Campingdownunder  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's definitely a door at the top of the ladder. The main room fully closes up with both canvas windows or fly screen windows for ventilation

  • @NullaNulla
    @NullaNulla ปีที่แล้ว

    @11:00 answers my questions. I have a screwed back so use more layers currently in our forward fold (at least a self expanding under the main mattress). If I had this I'd be adding the kings self inflating under it and since I sleep hot likely under sheet, top sheet and dooner but it sounds like you're saying that'd be too thick to pull it down.

    • @Campingdownunder
      @Campingdownunder  ปีที่แล้ว

      It would be close. You may be able to compress the self inflating mattress down enough. This is why I changed to a hardshell rooftop tent. Now I have a 100mm mattress plus all my bedding & pillows in it all the time

    I just used mine for the first time yesterday and I was delighted with the convenience of setting it up. Then I went for a sleep last night.... the inside was covered in bugs. Countless caterpillars on the inside. They had been getti g into the tent via the opening where the hinges are in the two sides. Have you done something to block these holes up? I was thinking about putting some Velcro on these areas after the tent is set up

    Would it b ok to mount to standard crossbar roof racks? Ok the tent is 57kg racks are normally 75-80kg rated that’s fine right but put 2 adults and a child on top would be a risk of damaging the racks as the total mass could be 250-300kgs?

    • @Campingdownunder
      @Campingdownunder  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The racks themselves can definitely handle the weight of having 2 adults in the rooftop tent. But if you are mounting it above the cabin of your car you need to check with your vehicle dealer to find out the maximum weight capacity of your roof. That's where most people have trouble

    With all this gear you have that goes out with you on location do you have it insured? I've been trying to look for companies that cover camping gear with no luck, home and contents say they cover it but its only while its at your home and not when you're out. @frankhammer6795 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just installed mine today on that same model ute.
      I installed 2 rear ladder bars in the tray first,
      cut down to the same height as the stock traybar
      and bolted this straight on between the front bar and the new mid bar
      Using 100mm M8 bolts
      That way I can still use the ute tray to store stuff underneath
      I'll put a rear rack and solar panel on later
      But it looks good so far!
      Height at the highest point ends up at 2.3 merers (ish)
      So if you need to get the ute into city carparks
      You may need to cut the back ladder racks down to get the right clearance
      I couldn't figure out the ladder & other stuff because I ran out of daylight
      So there's heaps of stuff I haven't even though to check out yet
      Other than a broken Zipper closer
      I'm going to give it a field test tomorrow to see how the ute handles the extra weight up there

      Klugers have factory roof racks so as long as you have the cross bars going across between the roof racks it will mount on. But I'd confirm first with your local Toyota dealer how much weight your car can handle on the roof. Both static weight (stationary) when you are parked & climb up into the rooftop tent and also how much weight while you are driving along. Remember on & off road have different weight ratings. As long as your roof can have the 60kgs of rooftop tent & 1 or 2 people inside it it will be fine. But always better to make sure it's safe first 👍
