    One of my favorite little hikes. I collect any trash on the trails too.
    Leave no trace.

      Yes, I'd like to go to that are in the summer, too, and explore the rocks more. It's a special place.

    This looked like a cool winter overnight. Very surprised at how little snow is up there at this time of year. Thank you for sharing.

    Just saw this....another one for the books! Going to plan this hike for next week. Haven't been to the Zealand Falls area since hiking there when my kids were young, almost 30 years ago. You continue to inspire me to get back out there , even if by myself. I am most grateful for your videos.

      I really appreciate your kind and detailed comment. That was one of the trips where I tried very hard to make sure my camping plan was "legal" by talking to the WMNF rangers. It isn't in a FPA. It isn't in the Alpine. And there are signs suggesting clean camping is permitted. Yet I still worried about it. Anyway you said hike not backpack..... I recall last year the Fall photos of the Sugarloaf area was spectacular. So I hope you get those conditions! Have fun.

    The Zealand area is one of my favorites in the Whites and it looked like you had an awesome open spot for camping. Beautiful photography as usual.

    As always, a pleasant trip with great photography. My stress level disappeared as you moved higher up the mountain, have not hiked in that area but will try it maybe next month. Thank you

      Thanks. Yes, this was even better than I expected. In retrospect I am glad I didn't heavily preview what those summits would look like. It was fun to "discover" the terrain.

    4:15 Ditto. The view needs to spread in all directions, not just down. Your shot here reminds me of the view of the Presidentials from the Imp Face.

      Glum to Glad! I will try to keep on a more regular outdoor schedule. Going the last half of February without backpacking was not a good plan.

    What a peaceful area to let the stresses of modern life fall away. Quite the amazing sun beams coming through the clouds too.

      @RachelWhelton  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, thanks. On the way home I drove directly into the crazy clouds in Franconia Notch and it was rain the entire way home. Glad I got to see the cloud show from the sunny side! Lucky choice since I had contemplated going to Lonesome Lake instead.

    Crazy how it is basically spring there. So early!

    • @RachelWhelton
      @RachelWhelton  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes. It is crazy to see so many signs of spring. Each year there is something like an early daffodil, for example, but then it freezes in a frost or something. This year seems different because in every way it feels like spring. The sun, the light, the lack of snow, the birds...

    Nice to see the trails are clearing up for spring and that they are plowing the Zealand Road (no more road walk to Zealand Hut soon). That summit you camped in is so big sure if anyone came by, they’d never see you. Great views of the Whites for not a lot of elevation work on the Sugarloafs. Good to be careful on the way down the latter (it feels sketchy, even in summer 😊). How was the freeze dried ice cream?

    • @RachelWhelton
      @RachelWhelton  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Oh yeah, that freeze dried ice cream is on the list for items to re-supply! I saw a recent photo of Zealand Road and you can see the asphalt now. Of course, that was before they got 10 inches of snow yesterday.... Hmnmn....

      @RachelWhelton  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think you mean the thermometer which also has a humidity readout? It is from the Thermoworks company. I ordered it on their website.

    Really nice, thank-you Rachel! (You didn't weigh your pack for us this time.) Well, March has come in like a lamb, I wonder what the rest of the month will bring. Not a stitch of snow now where I live. 'Mars 2.0,' insightful. (SVP, what is that blue (GSI type) coffee mug with the GSI type insulation and soft handle? thanks if you can.)

    • @RachelWhelton
      @RachelWhelton  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That mug is the GSI Outdoors Infinity Backpacker Mug. It comes in various colors. You can get one at REI. I got this one from Backpacker's Pantry because they had a sale when I bought several meals. It is lightweight, has measurement marks, is somewhat insulating, and you can take off the neoprene to wash it. Good price also.

    Great vid Rachel, what a beautiful area! How do you find an external vs internal framed pack?

    • @RachelWhelton
      @RachelWhelton  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That pack is the Kelty Tioga 5500. It is my husband's favorite pack. He convinced me to try it because my summer packs could not fit my winter sleeping bag. It manages weight and volume so well that I got one for myself. They are out of production but a few new ones are still for sale here and there. I got mine from Enwild.

    I loved this! I’m so happy spring is almost here, glad for a short shoulder season. I’m ready for dry ground. The views from the summit were amazing! The Timelapse’s and footage you got of the sun rays at sunset were beautiful. What camera/s do you use for filming?

    • @RachelWhelton
      @RachelWhelton  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      My GoPro 12 and my Sony A7iv both do in-camera Timelapse's. I can tell the difference if I look closely. But it is pretty cool that a cheap GoPro can make something almost as beautiful as the expensive camera. And it sure is easier to set up with the GoPro.

      @@RachelWhelton Nice! I have a GoPro Hero 11 Black and love it! Wanting an actual camera in the future but not quite there yet. Thanks for info!
