Excellent video on replacing the 3 way valve. Thank you sooo much for the tip about reusing the old brass mount plate. Took the new washer, left off the new brass plate and reconnected the 3 way. I replaced the pump while I was at it. The clip that secures the pump was a bit of a bugger to get back into place, and I would recommend that if you're replacing the pump, that you should pre-screw the holes on the bottom around where the pump drain plug goes, so that the screws go in easily to secure it to the cabinet. I didn't really want to replace the pump, but the level 2 tech at Navien said that for sure the 3 way was pooched because we were getting bleeding back into the heating loop, when no heat was called for. The tech said that although the pump may be working, the pressure numbers coming back on the display said that the pump may be having an intermittent issue, or beginning to fail. Your video with explanation, was phenomenal. Thank you Is there a repair kit for these pumps? How do you test the pump to see if really pooched? The pumps have a screw out for the bearings , I think. They look very similar to a Grundfos heating pump.
Been in the trade a couple of years now, always reference your videos to help me learn. This is the most in-depth channel I’ve ever seen. Feels like I’m standing right next to you learning first hand. Thank you from Toms River.
My love for plumbing was tested 2 weeks ago or so having to replace the same 3 way valve. Still love it but was not happy that day. I will have to keep that idea of reusing the old brass plate because thats where i ran into troubles to thanks for the tip. That would have saved a lot of swearing lol.
CB, Nice job! Its seems like i'm standing right next to you while your doing the job.! The manufacture should have that valve facing to the left side of the panel, along with an easy access panel for easy replacement.
CB 1 love your videos!. Have a ? We bought a outdoor Rinnai tankless hot water heater. We live in Montana where it can get down to -20 or more with wind chill. Is there a way you can install these outside with cold temps. Like this. It’s hard to find a good plumber here and I know you know your stuff thank you .
I had exact same error code and symptoms on brand new unit, then it started to work normally, go figure. How fast can you get spare parts for Navien? readily available?
If you are or have Navien certified techs you can get what is essentially a large tool box that has various different pieces and parts excluding a heat exchanger.

Brave soul!! I’ve been pro Navien for about 5 years. I haven’t had any issues with proper maintenance of flushing the unit. Well designed but costly. I wish they had a parts kit at our local vendors. They don’t give them away even with proper training. That’s the only downfall I have found with this Roles Royce
I have replaced many of of these. They suck to replace. I am at the point now where i remove the boiler from the wall and replace the three way then reinstall it on the wall. It is much easier access
if that was in my own, I'd be mad enough to cut the side of case and bend it out of the way for permanent easy valve access lol. you'll probably be about that mad at it when it fails again sooner than later too.
she's spitting ducks at ya, did you forget the header service valves shut? that leaves the expansion tank and rest of system isolated with no where for water to expand when it fired. that would rapidly expand and skyrocket the water pressure inside the boiler making it spit ducks out the relief. either always open the service valves first or better yet shut the gas supply off, power it up and purge the air out, run domestic hot water so it diverts and purges the heat exchanger also. probably have to go through a couple lockout/reset cycles, then open all valves, turn gas on and reset for the last time.
Just had one of those shoot the same error code 001 and it was because of a gas leak on the top of the heat exchanger. I would shoot the code intermittently. All I do is repair These junkie units.
Good video Chuck, but you guys make this job way to hard. I have replace dozens of these, it's not the actual spring valve that fails, it's the cheap plastic cam and motor that fails from constantly actuating when in recirc mode. You can replace the motor, cam assembly without pulling the pump and 3way valve body, its just 4 screws on the top of the valve body. You do have to remove the pump venting and piping to the exchanger and get them out of your way. Pull the motor off of the top and replace it along with the contacts and cam, plug in the new connectors. Relatively easy repair. 99% of the time, the spring valve is working fine, but you can test it by depressing it with your finger when you remove the motor assembly.
Please people. Don’t get Navien’s. They suck and even suck more to work on. Also avoid getting combi units of any kind. Those 3 way valves always go. Get a nice burnham alpine.
@@ChuckBarron just bad experiences lol. We had one summer half of our installs were Navien warranted swap outs. So many leaking heat exchangers. Navien tried to blame the water but we have customers on everything imaginable. One guy even has city water with a UV system. And their customer support is either really good or really bad. Had one time a relief valve was blowing cause whenever it switched to hot water the heating side pressure would increase and blow the relief valve. Their customer support recommended replacing the pressure sensor....I tried explaining to them I had a mechanical safety going off and the sensor is working cause it’s at 29 and won’t go higher because of that valve and he didn’t seem to understand and hung up on me.

Great job Chuck, also camera work is exceptional!!!
Thank you kindly!
Take a look at mikey pipes on youtube about navien heat exchange issues. I saw some indicators in your videos too.
I wonder what my issue with my Navien. I don’t get an error code.
Maybe someday they'll make extra access panels.
Nice job Chuck
That would be cool

I would never put an outdoor unit where average winter temps and the 100 years low would go below freezing. one long power outage and it's history ;)
actually we have a housing project that built diamond plated insulated units to house a bank of naviens to prevent freezing.
If you dont mind me asking. What are the symptoms what is the reason you are changing it?
It is a piston valve and probably stuck in partially open position.
no hot water was this system. Dr. Tech support sent me in right direction.
Seems more like a car mechanic on a compact car vs plumbing & heating.
true that.
nice job chuck
Thanks 👍
Thanks buddy, be safe

If you are or have Navien certified techs you can get what is essentially a large tool box that has various different pieces and parts excluding a heat exchanger.
However, if the system is still under warranty they don’t like you just changing parts; typically we get them next day from Navien
we have local supply houses that handle them.
on my hot list to do....a must. I gotta get there.
true that jason. they are great.

I've seen alot of complaints on the naviens and I mean ALOT of issues especially the ncb models

not if serviced and install correctly. Trust me I have learned from my mistakes.
