Its easy to deal with rich pensioners getting the Winter Fuel Allowance. Just increase their the tax they pay by the same amount - then the £300 goes straight back to the Treasury. Labour didn't do this because they wanted to take the money off both wealthy pensioners and poor ones. All they had to do was decide what figure determines someone being wealthy enough not to require the £300 one-off payment. Because the way Labour have chosen means any pensioner with an income over £12,500 a year they regard as well-off enough not to need the allowance. Which to me implies the Chancellor Rachel Reeves on a salary of over £180,000 a year is stinking rich.
Nothing wrong with removing the winter fuel allowance from those that dont need it. The only issue I have with the policy is ensuring that the cut off point is not too low .
If you still think the benefit should be universal, why not give everyone unemployment benefit regardless of need?
pointless
This anti-Labour site with it's AI voice is appalling. Too many pensioners are so rich that they don't need the allowance. So means test the old bastards.
I agree, but you dont see the ones that dont need it handing it back.
@@IanMorrison-y3z - Of course not. They put it in the Christmas kitty or towards the Summer cruise. You don't hear such argument when the unemployed, disabled, or younger working people have benefits or wages cut. Do you?
