Being an Astros fan my whole life this series was the most painful to watch...the rivalry with the Atlanta Braves in the post season throughout the years and finally getting to face a different team and thinking our best chance of getting to the NLCS was through the Padres...boy was I wrong, but I must say what really stings...is being a fan of an Astros organization at that time that made a series of personnel moves that came back to bite us in the ass...trading away a lot of young players to rent Randy Johnson for half a season only to see him walk to Arizona the following year, and seeing Steve Finlay, and Ken Caminiti wearing the Padres uniform while beating us was all too much... RIP Tony Gwynn & Cammy
@danny viera good analysis but the astros really had not started the rivalry with the braves yet as they had only played them once in the playoffs to this point. I thought there was no way this astros team would lose to the padres and was a stinging one as well but 1999 was worse (bases loaded and no out and dont score vs rocker) and thought their 2001 series was a gimme only to be swept.
The Astros were stacked during this era. Bagwell, Biggio, Alou, Johnson. As a Padre fan, we were always the underdog so this playoff run was incredible for us. I think all of us knew what was coming in New York though. Ha.
I moved to San Diego from NY and watching this makes me say wow!! I have never felt excitement like this in San Diego but whats their to get excited about besides the sunshine and taco Tuesday!
@DVJFan both the 84 and 98 padres were great teams that deserved to win the world series. its a shame they ran into two of the greatest teams of all time there otherwise they probably would have won
Jesus, that Padre team was so good. Yankees were the best of all time that year. Still think that Langston got squeezed in the Bronx, changed the entire series.
Phil Nevin was the man on that team. The big unit randy Johnson was afraid of Phil and knew that if he tried to hit Phil with a fastball, Phil would charge the mound and stomp a mud hole in randy then walk it dry. Those were the good ole days of 90's baseball. Hopefully Phil get a managerial job soon. He'd be great managing these young players today!
Man, that 98 astros was one of the great teams of all time. How the hell did they have all of those great hitters and couldn't do ANYTHING in that series?
Seattle traded him to Houston at the 1998 Trade Deadline. He was a "hired gun" to the Houston Astros. He became a Free Agent at the conclusion of the season and didn't resign with Houston for the 1999 season.
@@tbewin1z143 heck if the Padres could have pulled the trigger on a 1998 TRADE deadline deal….they would have won it all in 1998. That Wally Joyner homerun was absolutely incredible. I remember going absolutely crazy.
Justin,Joyner had an underrated career,in my estimation!

Danny Viera III, we finally got one last year. But I agree, THIS was our year.

The '98 Padres had one phenomenal run!⚾🇺🇲
I was there! I'll never forget that. Can t believe it s already been 18 years.
I was there‼️ Best season ever for the Padres.
Will us Padre fans ever experience magic like this again? What an amazing season.
I'd argue the 98 Yankees were the best of the last 20 years. If the Dodgers win this year they might be there too
2017 Astros were teh best in the last 20

Not even close. Come back to me when they win 114 regular season games and record 11-2 in the postseason.

The 1998 Padres are a criminally underrated pennant winner.

I was there and the feeling was electric ⚡️. We will do it again!
Best Padres team ever. It was heartbreaking how the season ended in the WS but still one of my fondest memories as a life long Padres fan.
Agree!
Oh Man... I was there with my Dad... What a great game!!!
Tony Gwynns bat speed was inhuman
Nostalgia...and now I'm crying...
Miss watching these guys when I was 10 at Jack Murphy stadium
Ah how I miss baseball in the 90s
Don't get too many pinch-hit, two-run triples anymore.

The yankees were actually better in 1999, despite "only" winning 98 games lol. Roger Clemens
Yah he did! Maybe series would have been different if ump got call right!
19 Years Later, My Favorite Astros Moment, Houston Astros Win The Against The Dodgers (2017)
F...cheaters!
They should've kept those uniforms!!!!
John Bowerman I’m always partial to the 84 uniforms, but these where nice.
I don’t know if you’ll see this now, but I really like their new uniforms
The Stadium was "rockin"!
Leyritz always clutch
MEMORIES THOSE WERE SOME GOOD TIMES!
I was at this game sitting in the loge section. That place was literally shaking, it felt like our section was going to collapse!

how did you sneak in?

We were definitely the underdogs; especially with all our inexperience in the post season. This was a magical year to be a Padres fan.
it was an all right handed lineup; easy for a left-handed pitcher to get in a groove against them
This is the last time the padres won a playoff series... 20 years ago now
