For all of those people who wonder why the police have things like this, I have a simple answer. It is much cheaper for police to just use ex-military vehicles than to buy extremely expensive custom-made armored vehicles

Fair enough, but I thought that police were supposed to be public servants that engaged in public activities and tried to hold the trust of the public. If I seen a fucking MRAP rolling down my street, I no longer consider that person engaging in normal policing activity. He no longer looks like a public servant, and is no longer approachable like one.

@@jnjackson87jj it's a SWAT vehicle, not a patrol car. SWAT doesn't do community policing, they do high risk warrants, barricaded suspects, hostage situations, and active shooters. Officer safety is more important than you being offended by a big scawy twuck

Wonder why FHP has an MRAP? Their top speed is 65mph, and HP is mostly chases and whatnot. Guess it would make a killer roadblock (quite literally if they used it on a speeding car instead of a much slower semi truck or box van) vehicle since they weigh up to 18 tons.

Law enforcement officers on SWAT, or Special Weapons and Tactics teams, are specially trained to use submachine guns, sniper rifles, and assault weapons, and may also have access to concussion grenades and armored vehicles.
SWAT teams are often called if a gunman barricades himself in a building, and particularly if he takes hostages, . It indicated SWAT teams may also help control large crowds, search for dangerous criminals, and carry out raids to execute search warrants.
Here are 11 facts about the history of SWAT:
in 1964 in Philadelphia in response to a rash of bank robberies, The 100-man team was established to react quickly and decisively to bank robberies as they were in progress using specially trained officers who had superior firepower. The website said the squad proved successful, which prompted other cities to form their own teams.
Charles Whitman - who shot people randomly from the top of a tower at the University of Texas at Austin, while police who responded found themselves poorly equipped to deal with the situation - were a key catalyst that led to the proliferation of SWAT teams across the United States, .
was founded primarily by John Nelson, a former Marine and Vietnam War veteran who was a patrol officer at the beginning of his law enforcement career, . The LAPD's poor responses to rioting in Watts in 1965 led to the feeling in the department that a special tactics team was needed.

It can batter down doors or walls while keeping the SWAT team safe. It can be used as a mobile barricade or an mobile bulletproof cover.

@@robertmartin3194 So what difference does it make if a SWAT team is in an MRAP that the police got for free or cheap instead of a $300,000 bearcat?
      It's just doesn't make sense
Its "bad" for the police to acquire surplus MRAP's, but Bearcats which do the exact same thing, just aren't surplus DOD material, are fine?

Not sure if you ever seen any, nor all, of the four parts of this series. Must admit, first time, I stayed up all night watching, but unable to comprehend ...

I can't imagine what it must be like to be hit with an EFP/IED of a size, that it tore the back off like a tin can, killing two, and seriously injuring a third ...
