The Nashville hot chicken is my wife’s favorite. In her opinion, the best one she ever ate was Royals Chicken in Louisville, KY. So delicious! I am going to use this recipe to make some homemade hot chicken sandwiches for my wife. Thank you! Suggestion: Rueben or Runza from Omaha, NE.
That origin story sounds believable. It's hardly the first time someone made an intentionally outrageous dish to spite the diner, only for them to absolutely love it and make it famous.
You should also try making the classic, original style of Nashville Hot Chicken, rather than the commercialized version that is simply sauced chicken. This version is authentic in that it is accurate to what has become common around the country when talking about hot chicken, but it's not what can be found in Nashville itself when you go looking for the traditional recipe. I'm not saying that either is better -- tastes vary, and cuisine evolves -- just that if you do want to try our local dish, it's worth seeking out. Classic Nashville Hot Chicken is butter and/or oil compounded with a bunch of cayenne added that is stuffed under the skin. Then it is breaded and fried. The butter or oil carries the heat into the meat as the steam from the frying breading pushes it in. You can instantly tell the real deal because if you completely remove the breading, cut a piece of plain chicken out of the center with no breading or sauce, and eat it, it is still spicy. Another general rule of thumb is that if it doesn't have skin, it isn't hot chicken (as it needs to be stuffed). It doesn't *_require_* any sauce, but locally it tends to be a very oily sauce that carries more heat (Nashville fried chicken tends to be oily, possibly because we have a strong skillet fried rather than deep fried background). Many original local styles are oily to the point that many touristy places bow to the taste of external visitors and have switched to more mainstream sauces to appeal to visitors, especially for the lower heat levels. I know plenty of locals who prefer that style of sauce, so we're probably in the process of evolving away from the original more oily chicken. It's also not traditionally served as a sandwich, as it has bones. It's just served with simple slices of white bread (a southern staple side served with BBQ, fish, or chicken), and pickles. The original Prince's location is less than a mile from my house and burned down a few years back (actually smoke damage from a neighboring business). Amusingly, we often went there to get the chicken from the Chinese place next door. There's a fantastic gyro place in the same plaza now that does spectacular loaded fries. Cuisine changes. I suspect that the original form of hot chicken will be a memory in a few more decades.
@@TheThemrnizmo Always! That line is why we often went to the Chinese place next door instead. I swear they lived off the people who didn't want to wait.
Nashville native here, thank you for actually getting it right! It kills me when people talk about hot chicken, but don’t even know about Prince’s haha
Midwest Scotcharoos Mix 1 cup of sugar with 1 cup of corn syrup, heat until bubbles Once bubbles add 1 cup peanut butter Once mixed add to 6 cups rice krispy cereal Place mixture into pan. Heat and mix 1 bag of semisweet chocolate and 1 bag of butter scotch. Add on top of the base
I got one! It’s called the bourbon trail originally made in Brownsville, Ky, specifically Edmonson County. It was made by accident when the owners of PJ’s Cafe tried to order some bbq sauce and they sent the wrong one, but the sauce provers told them to give it a shot, then presto the Bourbon Tail was born!
Dunno if you've done Georgia, but Brunswick Stew and Shrimp and Grits are a fan favorite. Shrimp and Grits is actually our state dish. You should look up the different variants of it, you're sure to find something you like :)
If you want something hearty, Indianapolis has a dish called Beef Manhattan (sometimes Turkey Manhattan instead) It looks like slop but it warms your soul. lol
though it may not be a hometown special it is certainly an Australian party special. Fairy bread, it's just some white bread with butter and sprinkles (spheroid sugary balls and not cylindrical sugar spires) I recommend a brand of Hundreds and thousands
Can you do haystacks from Elyria/grafton Ohio (The recipe isn't well known) Rice mixed together well with red sauce and a small amount of ground beef Topped with nacho cheese salsa and lettuce Warmed up a little bit and it's perfect
I hope you do something from Cajun Country, but there are so many options I don't know what to suggest. Maybe a fried shrimp po' boy since there's no way you'd pull off a proper gumbo.
