It's funny that people point out its lots of carbs or there is no "color" lol who cares.......it's 1 meal a year we eat this. It's great stuff with great people.

I grew up eating like this. My maternal grandmother was Brethren. She was up before the sun rose each morning starting the dough for fresh bread. The noodles we ate were made from scratch. Butter was home made. The Quilts on our beds were hand made. I never remember her hands ever being idle. If you were bored she always had something you could do to keep you busy.

We ate same food on the farm. No ones fat because all our time was spent working on the farm, and running around playing with each other. Milk from the cow, not processed, bread is leavened, no sugar, no deserts after a meal. We raised our organic chickens, and next door neighbor had cows. We had organic orchards, peaches, pears, cherries, and canned everything. Monsanto has purposely sprayed, and ruined much of the organic farms, and Nestle is buying up deep well water right and air space all around the World. That means in those places you can’t drill a deep well or collect rain water. They own it.

i cant get over how piping hot the food is. Any cook knows how hard it is to do with a small family to have everything perfect much less a holiday meal for so many. That was heart warming to watch and looked absolutely DELICIOUS. What kindness, thought and care went into that meal. You're truly blessed. Thank you for sharing.

This looks like the Sunday dinners we had on my grandparents' farm in Mississippi when I was young. Most everything was grown on the farm and the family sat
around the table talking and laughing. I miss those days.

My background is Pennsylvania Dutch German on my Father's side. My grandma cooked the very same way. I cook the same way and my husband and kids appreciate the food also
We go to church every Sunday and in afternoon family comes to visit and the women prepare a hot meal for dinner. Not one of the grown up children have had any trouble with the law. Smoking weed or had to have shotgun wedding. Today's family does not have meals together. No church or God, and Sunday you go to Walmart. Shopping or play hockey, soccer, etc.

Germans today are less connected to Germans of centuries ago than the Amish were. The Amish are simply Germans from 400 years ago. Identical to how they were then... Before the 20th century, nearly ALL German calories were carbs, because bread was THE primary source of nutrition for Germans.

. Denisejohn65 - Nail Ed I miss the way we ate when I was a child...I’m from the Deep South...infact..so far south that a couple of hours drive and you’d be in the Gulf of Mexico...my parents ..particularly my mother grew up on a farm and back then they cooked huge amounts of food because the workers would eat breakfast and then a huge lunch...they called it dinner...they’d have some type of green...turnips were the best...several meats..chicken, pork chops, pounded steak...and many different vegetable...also several types of dessert...pies, cakes cobblers..etc...so when I was a child I guess my mother thought we still were supposed to eat that way...we played much harder and outside more than kids today.."so we didn’t get fat...but we really didn’t need all that...still I’d be happy eating nothing but fresh vegetable...cooked the old south way....at night the meal would be more of a snack and it was called a “cold supper”. And your just ate maybe a biscuit and ham or something g along those lines...people eat so much crappy food..live started having smoothies for my husband and I...that way we can get fruits and veggies in..

I live in an area with many Amish. They come to benefit dinners, supporting the community. They also offer excellent food for sale at their home stands. When I go to the Amish auction house I absolutely have to order their delicious hamburgers and their doughnuts. (Like I need the doughnuts) WOW! Wonderful people.

Yes, my grandmother cooked on a wood stove, so did my mom until she got married, and this Amish food looks like what we eat still.(Yummy!) Their lifestyle wouldn't have seemed strange a hundred years ago. Many country people lived "off gird" and gardened and canned, had horses and plows, rode horseback or in wagons, had outhouses, barns and livestock, raised or hunted their own meat, etc. Many country people still live close to that way, although with more modern conveniences. "Country folks can survive" ( Hank Williams, Jr.).

Thank you for sharing I miss my dinners on Sunday at my home with my children. Every Sunday after church my children would all come for dinner but the my husband got sick he's on his11th bladder and kidney cancer , so we miss a lot of church and my one son moved hour away over bay bridge so it's a hassle to come here with his wife and two small children. My daughter stoped coming and my grandson. My youngest son never ready cared for the family dinner thing. My health is bad I can't do what I use to but I can cook but my husband losing his job now on disability doesn't hardly pay our mortgage and electric bills and they just like up.If you get disability then they give you good stamps it's degrating and try feeding a family of three in 120.00 a month expleshy on holidays ! So sad grateful for the disabily little help but just can't afford it .We do every blue moon have a small dinner with my youngest son and my daughter and her family always good made with love:) I so miss it tho.tks for the video truely loved it family and friends amen Mrs.Wolfe

I Miss those days now that i'm the last one living in my family. I Have outlived everyone else and don't bother to set the table or make big meals anymore. I'm down to soup and sandwiches now. Be thankful for your family everyday. And give thanks to God for what you have....everyday.

What impressed me was the steam coming off everything you put on your plate, I would struggle to keep so many different items that hot when they were on the table. Marie Yes your correct most all Amish ancestors did originated from Germany I think he was just pointing out that his food is similar in Poland that's all

    • @vanessas2454
      @vanessas2454 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

This kind of food looks rather familiar to me. I am German, living in today´s Germany. And we DO still eat that way. Homecooked meals would often include several of the shown components, and they weren´t all carbs. If I identified everything right, there was coleslaw, green beens, mash potatoes, scrambled eggs with ham, noodles, gravy and battered chicken (to me the least German-looking part), two kinds of breads, and slow-cooked pork.
The desert was not traditionally German, both because pies with crusts and all that icing are more of an American feature, and we wouldn´t eat cake after a substantial meal anyway. Instead, we would have some fruit or a little pudding for desert, and have the cake (with coffee) for a seperate meal in the afternoon.
Also, I want to point out that when the Amish emigrated and took their customs with them, large parts of today´s Poland were still German. And as neighboring countries, some of our traditions are similar.

Southern Food Junkie If you ever have the opportunity please do so. Its some of the best home cooking you will ever have. Its always fresh and homemade. Nothing store bought. I live about 45 minutes from Amish country and absolutely love being so close. The homemade quilts, baked goods, jellies, jams, fresh fruits and vegetables. Not to mention the furniture they build is always top notch when it comes to quality.

+Food Junkie, If you can't make it east, go to the Amana Colonies in Iowa. Amish (Amonites?) live there. The food is yummy--just like my grandmother used to cook. Who cares about the bland colors? The taste is what matters.

I enjoyed your video. I grew up with Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Amish as my neighbors. You made me homesick!
I do take issue with the fact that you have pictures with the faces of some of the Amish that were there. The Amish, as a whole, don't believe in pictures. In PA, they are issued picture-less state ID cards.

Keeping It Dutch ~ That's cool. Being that they were my neighbors, I just never take a picture that includes their faces. I might do from the back, but never the faces. I understand what you did. I totally miss the Amish markets! Good food at cheap prices! This is exactly how my PA Dutch great-nana would cook. I miss PA so much, I need to go for a visit!

Amish food is so good. You can make anything with a good Amish cookbook or if you're lucky enough to live close to an Amish community many have stores or, my favorite, the family fruit stand. There's a flea/farmers market weekly on a farm 30 min from me and during the summer there's many Amish families there selling furniture and sheds and fruits, vegetables and baked goodies. Wonderful, beautiful people with kind, generous and loving hearts
