Living Legend Sal Cuevas Reveals How He Transformed The Sound Of Salsa

- Episode 015: “All About The Bass… Of Salsa” Featuring Sal Cuevas
Truth be told, we’ve been dying to get this interview for over two years now. Salvador “Sal” Cuevas, a Puerto Rican Enye (ñ) from New York (Newyorican), was surrounded by not only the latin side of the city, but also the sounds of rock, funk, afro-cuban, jazz and so much more. He quickly picked up the bass guitar in middle school and forever transformed. Sal was for many years a member of the salsa music group Fania All-Stars circa (1978-1985), as well as several other top name salsa groups of the time such as Johnny Pacheco, Héctor Lavoe, Willie Colón, Ruben Blades, Celia Cruz etc. During this time he was one of only five bass players in New York City who recorded many of the “jingles” for T.V. and Radio. In fact, as a world class bassist, Sal helped establish an entire musical genre - Salsa, by reinventing latin music with rock n’ roll and jazz influences and smashing basses along the way with Johnny Pacheco.
Sal currently lives in Miami and is working on a musical project with Gloria Estefan.

It's remarkable that a New York-born player with such distinctively Anglo-American influences (The Who for smashing guitars or Jaco for the noodling) came to define the style of Salsa worldwide. By the time I was born, those records were already classics of the genre, but I never thought about how they came to be. Thanks for telling this story.

Tuvimos la oportunidad de conocerlo en el mes de Julio de 1977 cuando vino por primera vez Willie Colon al puerto de Veracruz , Mexico . El venia tocando el bajo , se tiró un solo en Lluvia de tu cielo , Ruben Blades se referia hacia él como " el baby del grupo ". Segun la entrevista que le hicieron ese dia de la presentacion a Ruben Blades , dijo que la orquesta la habian comenzado en Febrero , estabamos en Julio , solo tenian 5 meses. Eso fue historico . Y Sal Cuevas era un hombre muy sencillo y humilde en su trato , para lo enorme en conocimiento musical. Fue un innovador . Descanse en paz
