    Really good video. I just ordered this exact reel and already have the Shakespeare tiger rod. WOW did I get lucky or what.? Only been inshore fishing about a year now but after catching 2 black drum 42 and 43 inches respectfully thought I better up my game 😁 Thanks again. Subbed and liked.

    I appreciate the video. But I understand that braid is stronger, thinner and less stretch but much less abrasion resistant than mono?

    • @RealFishin
      @RealFishin  ปีที่แล้ว

      @Barry G you are correct but the last part. Braid has more abrasion resistance than mono. Also, braid has a high sensitivity compared to mono. You can feel the fish! 25 years ago I only used mono. I started to switch to braid about 15 years ago and use braid for everything but king fish or trolling setups.

    I use Penn reels all the time. born in cal. I fish 🐟 yellow tail and bluefin with Penn 25 - 60 fathom. if you don't fish every day go with Penn. great for the price. if you fish a lot long range. avet or daiwa reels work great. these Penn reels are tough and plenty capable for that 20 to 200 pound fish.

    • @RealFishin
      @RealFishin  ปีที่แล้ว

      @Christopher squatch I agree! I love the Daiwa spinning reels but for the bang for the buck the Fathom is a fantastic reel. We have fished them hard for the past five years and they are bulletproof!

    • @anton2417
      @anton2417 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have heard of people catching 400lb fish with fathoms so nothing is impossible with those. I have used the same 40n with no maintenance for 2 years now. Going to give it some new grease before the cod seasons starts this time around.

    • @squatch1980
      @squatch1980 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@anton2417 you've heard of it? Then it must be true. Hahahahaha! I fish tuna and yellow tail with mine on the west coast. It's a 40 ! Not meant for big fish. I've caught some tuna with them. They don't hold up well with big fish. You shouldn't fish anything over 100 pounds with those.

    • @socalfishincrew5410
      @socalfishincrew5410 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the 25 spooled with 50 power pro for 430 yards. The drag makes me want to use it for foamers this summer. Do you think it could hold up to tuna 30 to 90 pound range.

    • @squatch1980
      @squatch1980 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@socalfishincrew5410 yes. 25 fathom 2 speed is plenty capable of catching fish up to 100 pounds. I wouldn't recommend it though. Anything over 60 pounds or so will be tough to pull in. It's the smaller frame (not the drag) that becomes an issue on those bigger fish. Although the drag will fade after a few big ones. You'll need to get it serviced. I've seen people catching 30 - 80 pound all summer on those. It can be difficult on those party boats because you need to pull them in quicker. On a small private boat you can take more time on the fish and fish a lighter drag. Which helps keep those reels in good shape. I'd recommend getting a penn 40 or Avet JX or LX for that size fish. With the price drop on the old Penns and deals on Avets that pop up in the off-season. I'd look into something in that size if your planning on fishing 5 - 10 trips for bluefin every year. Fathoms are great reels for the price though. Nothing wrong with starting there.

      @SoCalFishin Crew I would say this reel could handle tuna 30-65 pounds. What size line will you put on it? I have fished out of Venice LA and targeted my share of 30-65 pound tuna. @Francisco Ayon I do not recommend a level wind if you are going to cast a bunch. Go with the BG spinning reel if you want to cast frequently. The Penn fathom conventional reel is a reel that will last for many years and you have the ability to cast but I use it at anchor or trolling (no casting is involved with my fishing). You can get a conventional reel with or without a level line. I prefer a conventional reel without the level line.
